    • in reply to: Patch Lady – am I out of touch? #1988879

Susan, I just updated Firefox and up came the black screen.  I find it totally annoying and not the best for my poor 72 year old eyesight. Give the user a choice – I do not need some clown deciding that one colour (black) suits everyone.  Alas, the rot has set in and black is the colour that appears on everything these days.  The only thing I can add is “who ever” has absolutely no artistic sense , is colour blind and in essence has no taste (not food !) rather no class.  You have my sympathy.

    • in reply to: Patching as a social responsibility #1978706

Is this “the doctor is worse than the disease”?  Or “What’s good for the disease is good for the doctor!”  At first I thought this social responsibility re patching was a MS attempt at humour. However, all on askwoody know MS updates are far from hilarious – more pathetic, when one considers the size and value of MS.  I can’t say “professional”.  So stop telling users what to do until you follow your own advice.

    • I’m one of the millions of “outsiders” to whom this makes no never mind what so ever. The MS musical chairs change has done diddily squat to the Wndows  10 Updating stuff ups. Who ever within MS who sorts that schmozzle out will get my eternal admiration – but I’m not holding my breath.

How about 10 4 – over and out?!!  My feelings for MS updating included.  Just finished September updates to find CU for 1809 KB4524148 this morning.  It’s hidden awaiting word from Woody.  More wasted time.

    • in reply to: Where we stand with the September 2019 patches #1969542

Thanks to Woody and all for the dedication and hard work you do to keep us informed – it’s appreciated.  The reality is, all I want to do is turn on the computer and do what I want to do and not have to spend more hours deciphering Windows 10 Updates than doing my own stuff. Being an old [chap] I started out in the good old days of DOS  and then to Windows 95.  I loved the computer and the fact that “I was in control”.  Where am I now? I absolutely dislike and distrust MS and find the digital experience less than enjoyable.  I cannot believe that MS could be so inept as to dump the detritus they continually do on us the users.  Is this their ‘master plan’?  Me thinks something is woefully amiss at MS.  As much as it irks me to say this bring back Bill and the real people and lets have much less of all this IE in the clouds gunk. A simple operating system without all the “smart phone” (sic) c*** that is neither needed or, in some cases, just not wanted.

    • in reply to: Microsoft clarifies (?) its CVE-2019-1367 release method #1965189

Susan, generally I enjoy open-style zoos – no bars or cages.  MS updates etc – bah!

    • Hello Woody,  yes at the beginning of September Windows Update on my W10 Home stated Windows 1903 was availabe for my 1809 computer all I had to do was click to download.  Well I was having none of that so I ignored it. The same offering appeared for a couple of days and then the big yellow exclamation triangle appeared telling me “it” was ready!!!  I was not prepred to proceed and ignored it once again.  Mysteriously it disappeared and Update as usual said my computer was checked and up to date.  It has stayed that was since.  It reains a mystery to me and I put it down to MUS (Microsoft Update Syndrome) for which there has yet to be discovered a cure.

As an aside over the last few months the footpath from Soi Asoke to the Emporium has been replaced with astounding speed.  On the non-Cambodian side of course.  That side is still an obstacle course.

Charlie, that’s easy.  I like Sumatra coffee and Sumatra PDF viewer.

Thanks for your replies.  You got as far as the same bogged down spot as I did searching this.  I fail to see why MS insist in offering updates for products other than their own.  If another company offered MS updates there would be all h**l to pay.  Their AI update system of one size fits all is an abject failure.   This update will stay hidden.

    • Woody I understand your anguish with MS; as a “oldie” not as savvy with computers as you I too am just totally annoyed with MS and all their “double speak”, not to mention all the inane tomfoolery we have to endure month by month re their ridiculuous Windows Update.  Do MS really have QC/Business Model? Years gone by I was a major customer of Kodak- remember them?  I have the following dumped on my W10 Home ….. MSgobblie-gook
Who checks MS? Thanks for all your hard work on behalf of us poor dumb a** MS users.  AlasI feel it’s all getting beyond fair and reasonable.

    • in reply to: W10 Home to Pro #316638

Thank you one and all for your replies.  Kirsty I do know what to do; it’s just the “do I do it?’ that causes me some concern.  From DOS to Windows 7 I was a loyal MS customer.  Windows 10 and the MS stupidity in their update system has soured me.  Susan your reasons for Pro were what got me thinking.  Those who suggested saving my money are to my way of thinking. I guess an external USB disk/backup could be my answer.  Cheers to you all at Ask Woody.

Where can I get a copy of Windows 2000?  More than interesting!  Send a copy to Mr Nadella with this advice – “Proper Planning Prevents P**s Poor Performance”  aka Windows 10 and Windows as a service.  Not forgetting Windows 10 udating TORTURE.

    • in reply to: Dual boot help. #235175

Hello johnf.  A good suggestion I had not considered.  I need to investigate further.  Not having to dual boot with MS Windows 10 has considerable merit to me.  Yes I had thought to use the hard drive on my desktop.  I will rethink this. Many thanks.

    • in reply to: Dual boot help. #235174

Hello again Ascaris, you certainly answered my quetion big time.  Easy language and totally understandable.  A major step forward for me.  My desktop is 8 months old so I guess that answers many of the available options. F2 takes me to the BIOS UEFI on my Asus.  Another kind “Ask Woodyite” suggested using a second SSD drive to install Linux. This has some merit to me but I’ll do some more homework on this and proceed slowly.  Just admired your mini computer tutorial.  Another layer of knowledge for a senior citizen.  I will proceed slowly and update my progress on this page. If you are ever in my neck of the woods you are on for a baked dinner.  A million thanks.  Chris R.

Hello mn-, many thanks for your replys.  An additional piece of information to throw into the pot before I proceed. Also more computer knowledge for my ageing brain.  I’ll post my progres here as I muddle along.  Sincere thanks.
