    • in reply to: Questions on controlling Windows 10 updating #2175604

I have yet to follow the automatic steps to allow Win10 Updates, instead manually installing according to the Master Patch list.  I have 4 other relatives PC (all win10 Pro) that I am also manually updating.

Is that suitable or am I missing anything else not on the Master Patch list.  I have Office 2019 so that is not usable for manual patches. They have a mix of Office 365 or Open Office.

I have just made my Macrium backup and was about to finally follow the auto steps just so I do it correctly (Wushowhide etc) but thought I should ask first if manually avoids the hassles in the first place (keeping the PCs locked down from Update in between All Clear from Woody).

    • Too much “smoke on the water” here with Opera. Do the research for answers. DON’T play into op-ed write ups for basic information. You’ll more than likely find much of what is being said is generally MOOT, and will remain so, until, something official has made its way into the general tech community. I don’t trust Chinese made tech any more than the next person may or may not. But I believe in putting the proof in full view. Until then……Cheers!!

    • I am about to build 3 new personal PC for Xmas gifts.

In September I also built a new machine for my mother using a paid copy of Win10 Pro (OEM Disc).

New PC did not have CD/DVD so I tried to use 1809 ISO from MS Media Creation links when it still said only 1809.

But when I applied the Disc license code, and after final install and before any updates, I was already on 1903.

      Q. Does the License code mandate the version when it activates the ISO? I didn’t take the time to verify the disc version, I should have I guess.

      Q. Do we know if MS is already producing 1909 on USB and Disc retail/oem media?

I keep saying I’m going to cut the cord, but still haven’t.

One TV and Phone and Internet bundle.

I pay more in cable than I do in electricity most months.

Most of my TV is time-shifted TiVo.  But heavy internet gaming and surfing.

Every time my ISP (sole source in town) reaches a certain bill level I call and threaten to leave and they knock off ~$50 a month, then they start jacking it back up.

Yeah I don’t either, you would think they would have a banner right on the front of the website that I could have gone directly to, but you have to dig for it way down inside by following several links.  And that just gives the Forgot Password page.

    • Only have July Updates.

Was pushed to 1903 from 1809 ISO creation on a new install last week (the MS creation download link specifically listed as 1809 at the time I downloaded weeks ago).

User called just now to say they couldn’t print an office doc (.docx).

Had office set to block all macros with notification, user doesn’t need them, and when opening this document gets the popup.

Examined document and it does not contain any macros, just a word file with simple text.

The error popup says that “opening” the document requires VBA language support.  Can I assume this is part of this issue?

No problems opening an .xlxs file that does have formulas and one personal macro for adding new sheets.

    • Okay thanks,

I should be good, I finished up final cleanup and re-tested Skype and AnyDesk and have Macrium image backups on USB for her end as well as archive here.

With AnyDesk I should be able to solve any issues from here before it gets bad enough to require a restore.  Plus I really locked down her account and left her only Browser, Office and MS local games.

I didn’t lock down Firefox all the way but I locked out settings and have paid A/V running on top.  She is using ISP Webmail so hopefully they will catch the most blatant bad stuff first.

I’ll see when she gets it and we try first Skype.

    • Thanks,

I think I have it sorted now.

I was misunderstanding how to establish a connection until I re-read your post with  “All they have to do is turn on the machine”.

I was thinking of my Mom being logged in and needing direct support at the moment and having to “turn-on” AnyDesk with a shortcut.  Trying to do that gives the UAC prompt for Admin Credentials.

I realize now I only have to connect from my end and immediately have access to her desktop.  So I have hidden AnyDesk from the Start menu and removed the icon from the notification area as well.

I have also used both password and whitelist and disabled all other MS RDP.

      Thanks for your help.

    • Hello All,

Setup has gone well and I have taught myself a lot about Win10, Decrapifier, Classic Shell, GPEdit and a lot more.

I am almost ready for final cleanup and imaging/restore media.

CyberSAR, I still am having one major issue with Anydesk.

My mother will only be logged in on her Limited User (locked down) account and Anydesk won’t start for her under UAC (do you want to allow app to change…) w/o my Local Admin account password.

How do you work that for your clients?

Are they on Local Admin accounts already?

Do I need to unlock her account enough to install Anydesk to her user account instead of my Local Admin so she has standard user permissions to it?

I have tried using the ACT/TaskSched/Runas options and must not be doing something because it still is giving UAC prompt (with still locked down, but I gave her file permissions to the C:drive AnyDesk folders).  I have hidden C: drive from her File Explorer but not locked it out completely in Grp Policy.

And one last, does a paid sub make Anydesk any more secure than free license?  I don’t expect to use very many sessions to trigger their commercial use filters. But I am happy to support the Company.

Many thanks if you can point me in the right direction.

    • Thanks for more info all.

With that a few more questions arise:

Do I need an additional VPN service to use EasyDesk over? or is it served on the company VPN already.

Yes Admin Level user account for me, with password.  She will have limited user account with password.  Both Local accounts, do you mean adding a 2-factor authenticate? Is that possible with local Win10 accounts?

This is an ITX desktop, all new parts and case, hoping it lasts quite a while.  Not sure if I can keep it as long as the 13th or after but prob for the best that I do.  Do you mean that normal Win10 auto updates will not run in auto from a limited user account? (I won’t block access to them in Grp Policy).  She can re-start as needed and I’ll be sending her another personal user manual as well.

She is still capable of doing most tasks, unfortunately she will follow whatever the PC tells her even if it isn’t what I want her to do.  So I’m trying to make it a fairly dumb client machine for just web and solitaire with not much else.  She is still capable of going anywhere she wants on web so I can only lock down FF and add paid AV with full settings for protection.  She went through Win7-Win10 upgrade a couple years ago without issue until she prob tried to install something  a web site told her (going to lock installations down as much as I can).

I will be making a USB system restore/image for her that I can talk her through when needed.  I have already moved her file folders to a second internal SSD so I can clear the boot drive w/o issue if needed.  I’ll keep a backup here as well.

    • Thanks I may look into that, I just don’t want to expose too much of her computer, she also has a roommate that I do not know.

Ok thanks, I’ll try to tweak TB to resolve and if not I’ll use the link.

      Baah, sorry no coffee yet.

Should have titled Thunderbird 60.8.0 (32-bit).

No addons in Thunderbird except for an Import/Export Tool.

All other mail is fine as well as those first 2 Newsletters.

ISP is Suddenlink and using the Mail program and not web mail on ISP.

I have Thunderbird set to only download headers, PoP3, retain on PC.  I check the header and then use the “download the rest of the message” for the full body.

    • Having just seen this update I decided to install on the one machine I have moved to 1903 just to see what, if anything would go wrong. I was greeted with the garbage in the screenshot attached. A second restart cleared things up, the system returned to normal. I’m going through the system events to hopefully find a root cause. Thus far, I cannot find anything that suggests this is happening to other Windows 1o users and may therefore be just an isolated event.

      Cheers

Four systems, all Windows 10 Pro x 64. One machine is still on 1809, the other three are on 1903. Cannot duplicate on any. It appears I’m one of the lucky ones. lol

      Cheers
