Full does a thorough format job. Quick removes filenames only, and leaves data on the disk.

NTFS is Windows operating system. FAT can be used on other operating systems in addition to Windows operating system.

Right click on the flash drive, select properties, and view file system. You will probably see FAT32.

If you think the flash drive is bad, start over with another flash drive. There’s no point in repeating a data-loss experience on the same flash drive.

Flash drives are fairly fragile with the risk of losing data. I use flash drives for short-term storage or for porting files.

If you want more robust storage devices, get a couple of external hard drives and treat them nicely. Even external hard drives won’t last forever.

    • in reply to: Linux Lite #170022

Linus Lite is a nice starter kit for seeing how things work and checking out various features. (Compared to Microsoft product it’s easy to use and check for programs and updates. There are no instructions to install on the alternate Thursday of each month, under a blue moon, while walking backward,  and whistling. There appears to be very little operating system overhead.)

However, I’m going to need a heavy-duty version of Linux with lots of available packages and assurance that the Linux version will not disappear over the next few years. What do you recommend?

Could somebody tell me why in the Sam Hill Microsoft is now releasing non-security bug fixes for Win10 on random days of the month?

      What’s wrong with Microsoft?

    • in reply to: What You Need to Know About MELTDOWN and SPECTRE #168750

If you look at the tables in the second paper, you will see for a Spectre infected computer the number of cache-misses is substantially greater. In other words, Spectre exploits are designed to beat the snot out of a system, until Spectre exploit gets what it wants. As the paper states: “These vulnerabilities are a perfect example of attacks that are essentially invisible to the operating system (as they don’t involve any operating system call), but can be detected when monitoring patterns and events at the CPU level.” (Bold in the sentence is mine.)

My question remains and slightly rephrased: Is there a straight0forward method of determining if Spectre or Meltdown is present? Has someone developed a straight-forward method?
