AskWoody LoungerAugust 23, 2018 at 9:58 pm in reply to: Microsoft Patch Alert: August is much, much better than July #212866@OscarCP: l asked Woody the question in another thread but he did not answer, so let me ask you: does the MS Defcon level at the top of this page refer to the current month only? My feeling is that it does, but I would like it confirmed.
Another question is: is it OK now to implement the July patches?
I am in group B – security only patches – on 1 computer, and in Group A – monthly roll-up – on another computer.

AskWoody Lounger@Woody: what month does the MS-Defcon shown at the top of this page relate to? Is it the current month only? If not, it would be useful to show which month it is related to.

AskWoody LoungerWhat’s the big deal? Why are people so frantic to use MS’s snipping tool, when there are far better, free snipping tools out there.
The free version offers tons of features, and there are no ads.

AskWoody Lounger@Microfix: just to make absolutely sure: people on Win 7 and Win 8.1 Group B (= security patches only) should not yet install July’s security patches. When it is safe to do so this site will give a clear signal for that. Correct?

AskWoody LoungerAugust 15, 2018 at 12:31 am in reply to: Chromebooks may get the capability to dual-boot into Windows #210730@OscarCP: good comment. And to people who ask “why are you so ‘paranoid’, what do you have to hide?”, I always answer “when you go to the toilet you have nothing to hide, yet you close the door, you may even lock it. Certain things, certain data, are our own and we do not want to share it, that is our right. Period.”

AskWoody LoungerAugust 14, 2018 at 1:11 am in reply to: Chromebooks may get the capability to dual-boot into Windows #210440@Woody: fair question. With switching over to Chromebook you are providing Google with even more data with Windows being on there as well, as some people here have pointed out. Then again, there are ways to reduce that to a minimum, bearing in mind that 100% privacy does not exist. But I would have thought someone like you would prefer Linux.

AskWoody LoungerAugust 9, 2018 at 3:05 am in reply to: The mechanics of Windows and Office patching — explained in plain English #209499I run my own cmd files for batch installing servicing stacks, rollups, sec only updates, IE11 and its sec only updates, WMF 5.1, .NET 4.6.2, and then all the tweaks I do in GP (but done via registry so they are batched since I’m not running a domain at home).
Can those cmd files be shared here? I use WSUS Offline too, but am concerned by what you describe.

AskWoody LoungerAugust 9, 2018 at 12:13 am in reply to: Update in the browser wars: If you ain’t Chrome, you ain’t jack #209489Stuttering, white screens, lockups
LH mentioned similar problems in his comment https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/update-in-the-browser-wars-if-you-aint-chrome-you-aint-jack/#post-209074
and he also mentioned that a manual launch of Firemin gives no problems. It is not clear from your reply whether you still have those problems, but I can confirm LH’s comment that a manual launch gives no problems. I launch Firemin manually every day and have had no problems. I have not tried to have Firemin launched with the Windows start-up, but your and LH’s experience are enough for me not to try it out 😉

AskWoody LoungerAugust 6, 2018 at 10:18 pm in reply to: Update in the browser wars: If you ain’t Chrome, you ain’t jack #209107@Bob99: I am using Waterfox, and even though there is only 1 instance of it running at any time, its memory footprint increases all the time, even with your about:config workaround implemented. So I am ‘obliged’ to use Firemin.

AskWoody LoungerAugust 6, 2018 at 10:06 pm in reply to: Update in the browser wars: If you ain’t Chrome, you ain’t jack #209105@LH: I had been running Firemin successfully for a couple of weeks with manual start-up. Today I decided to check the start-up with Windows option, but after reading your comment I decided to switch back to manual start-up without going through the kind of tribulations you went through. So, many thanks for your feedback.

AskWoody LoungerAugust 6, 2018 at 4:59 am in reply to: Update in the browser wars: If you ain’t Chrome, you ain’t jack #208957@anonymous: I don’t know enough about SGP to have a useful discussion, I just mentioned a few things that came to mind. The website only has a few FAQs that have a distinct marketing angle, and the FAQ list is very limited. In any case, on the website I did not find a manual or a set of sensible, detailed instructions as to how to use the program.
As for my password manager, KeePass, I believe it is one of the best ones out there, it was even audited a few years ago for use by EU officials. I have been using it for 8-10 years and have never had any problems with it. I do make a paper copy of the passwords for 2 reasons:
1. In case something happens and I lose the use of KP, even if only temporarily
2. Sometimes a website does not accept copy/paste of a password, only a manual typing. In that case I need to have the password handy. From what I understand, it is not possible to do that with SGP. Again, I may be wrong and there might be a workaround, but it is not evident from the website.

AskWoody LoungerAugust 5, 2018 at 10:30 pm in reply to: Update in the browser wars: If you ain’t Chrome, you ain’t jack #208930@anonymous: I am aware of the underhand marketing techniques, and I did not mean to classify anyone as unworthy because, after all, who am I to put a “value” on people.
That said, I understand people just want to buy their machine, switch it on and start surfing without bothering with the details under the hood. I understand that too: you don’t want to know how an engine works and still drive your car.
But when you walk into a car dealer’s you are also aware that he is trying to sell you a car by listing all the positives about it, so you are alert and maybe check out a few of his claims.
Similarly, when an app or a website that pushes Chrome, or any other product, why would someone just accept that and not look/enquire a bit further? If you accept the car dealer’s word for everything then don’t be surprised if you have some unpleasant surprises.
