I use WUMgr to disable Windows Updates. (I am on manual download and install updates.) Because of this, I need to also manually initiate Windows Defender Updates / Security Intelligence updates. It is the only way, I know of controlling Windows Defender.

I problem is, it tries to restore from C: to C: . It does not let me choose the backup image from the external USB drive.

I am looking to try out the Macrium Reflect Backup to see if it is any better.

My experience with WUMT is inconsistent. Sometimes updates come through. Setting a metered connection seems to be relatively good for stopping Cumulative Updates like KB5034441, but may let other updates in, if you are running Home version.

You may not like this, I am on manual updates using WUMgr. WUMgr can stop updates more consistently. Occasionally small updates come through on the Home version. It took a few tries over different days, before I got WUMgr to permanently get Microsoft Updates disabled.

None are perfect, you do the best you can. When you see something unintentionally gets on, uninstall, looking for a restore point or restore from a backup.

    • in reply to: AOMEI Backupper – Simple Restore #2638029

AOMEI can see the external disk. In fact, under Advanced, Locate Image has a way to map the different partitions to different drive letters (nice feature if I knew how to take advantage of it)

Tried another USB 3 port, no difference.

I restored another PC using AOMEI before, I don’t remember it being this difficult. Somewhere in backing up 2 drives, I must to done something to the backup configuration so I can’t choose the backup image.

If I could find some command line to do a C: drive restore, it would be good too. I don’t see that yet, will have to keep looking.

I have a Macrium Reflect Backup too.

Depends how serious you consider a disable Microsoft Store file but it is not nice since Windows Defender was not able to stop it.

I am recommending “GitHub – TheWorldOfPC/Windows11-Debloat-Privacy-Guide” be removed from AKB2000022 or attaching a highly cautionary note about opening its batch files.

    • in reply to: BitLocker on my new machine, is the disk encrypted? #2633185

Here is my current status. Some background will explain what is happening here; although you may have seen the reply in the other thread.

It has been installed with Local Accounts. When I looked at Bitlocker, it is on. However the drive is not encrypted because a Microsoft Account was not setup for logon. Hopefully this is what you are asking.

    • Good advice Alex5723, see reply

I manually download the patches (via another PC) to apply, before I am going back onto the Internet.

    • Sounds like KB5031274 applies to Windows 11 22H2 Moment 4, Neowin.

KB5031274 is not available in the Microsoft Update Catalog whereas KB5033055 is available for a manual download.

    • Under Windows Updates no patches have been installed yet, as shown attached. It is still being setup and only was connect to the Internet because it is necessary during setup. It is current still offline.

    • As shown in this 2024 AskWoody Alert, people might find GRC.com’s InControl easier.

I will leave this open to the end of the month before closing to resolved.

      Thanks everyone.

The hashes match up for the Win11_22H2_EnglishInternational_x64v1.iso and the iTechtics’ Win11_22H2_English_x64v1.iso files.

Windows 11 is still pristine and has only been on the internet for a few minutes to setup. I will make a backup, before going on the internet again. Other software has been downloaded via another PC so it doesn’t need the internet, until I get my preferred security on.

Windows 11 Privacy section in the AKB 2000022 which I will have a look at.

Paul T: You make a good point.

I need 2 pieces of information to be sure, the file is the same:
      1) file size
      2) SHA256 hash

There is a small chance the file could be manipulated to come up with the same SHA256 hash. Yes I did not check the file size so I am taking a risk.

Gordski: The file Win11_22H2_English_x64v1.iso matches up to the hash posted by Microsoft.
