    • in reply to: Edge isn’t working #2541291

My apologies I am going off-topic for one post; but while searching for answers I thought I would try this. The Edge Reset fixed it so it might help others with future problems too.

      My circumstance:
Win 8.1 upgrade to Win 10
      created new standard user
Microsoft Edge, Read Aloud has no sound while reading. Edge is not muted.
Edge can play sounds on YouTube videos
An old existing standard user can Read Aloud with sound
reset fixed the sound in the new standard user

I found a similar program on the PC at C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\EdgeUpdate

Side note for Google Chrome Update location:
      C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Update

The trick to using them was, executing them without parameters (I tried using the help parameter, eg. MicrosoftEdgeUpdate /?)

This manual technique is my preferred method. I usually prefer manual over automatic updates. I even block the MicrosoftEdgeUpdate and GoogleUpdate so I can control the Edge and Chrome updates.

This method downloads and executes the Microsoft Edge Update program. Once I lowered the Firewall Control filter to medium, it updated to Edge 109.

    • in reply to: Good News for Chromium #2528036

One of my problems was the MalwareBytes Windows Firewall Control. The filter needs to be lowered to Medium. Then it still did not work. If I refreshed it enough times, it probably would have updated similar to Windows 10.

      Google Chrome

Settings –> Privacy and security –> Safety check –> Check now

      It seems to check.

The baddy is Microsoft Edge; still on 108

I am curious about the details:

Here’s an extra warning about this problem. Chromium (not Chrome, the browser) is effectively part of the operating system. So be careful, especially when surfing the Web.

If it is in the OS, it is fine; what concerns me is if it is storing data / information in a place where I can not delete.

    • in reply to: Good News for Chromium #2524818

Chrome updated to 109 today. It took more than a few refreshes to initiate an update.

I can’t get Microsoft Edge to update but I did find documentation on setting Edge to a stable version, It uses registry settings.
      https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-update-policies .
You set it to stable, beta, canary or dev . I couldn’t find the registry entry so didn’t change anything.

The program that does the updating is located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\EdgeUpdate\MicrosoftEdgeUpdate.exe. It is in the 32-bit programs folder.

    • Another way on Win 8.1: When I installed 7-Zip, there is a CRC SHA option when I right click on a file. In there, is the ability to get the SHA256 hash.

    • I am going to upgrading to Windows 10 21H2 via an offline process using an ISO. (21H2 ISO is harder to get, you may have to use 22H2)

I am going to make a Checklist about my upgrade and I will put it in this forum some time in January, if you are interested. I will include my reason for going to 21H2 instead of 22H2.

I like Linux Mint too but have only played with the Live Distro via USB.

Practice Environment for the Restore Process

One worry with the back up process, is the restore. We don’t want to try the restore to ‘bare metal’ because what if it fails; so here is a solution if you have the necessary hardware resources.

I will only outline a solution if someone want to add in, all the details to do it. I did a quick search on the forum and didn’t see anything like this.

Practicing on a Virtual Machine (VM)
      1) install a VM like VirtualBox
      2) download a Windows ISO ie. Windows 10 or Windows 11, to install on the VM
      3) download and install the backup software you like to use, like Macrium Reflect 8
      4) make a small practice backup and save it
      4) practice the restore process on the VM (using the small practice backup) so you are familiar with the restore process

I suggested this because I do should it.

    • in reply to: Firewall App Blocker — Make the Windows firewall usable #2512117

This looks very good and sounds promising.

I have used Windows 7/8/10 Firewall Control then found Malwarebytes Windows Firewall Control on the Older Geeks web site. Having been experimenting with it probably for more than a year I am undecided about it (it is good and bad at times, currently being on Windows 8 and 10). I suspect it is a 32-bit program. Malwarebytes Windows Firewall Control has exposed more items running on Windows than Windows 10 Firewall Control shows.

Anybody have any other comments on any of these firewall control programs?

    • in reply to: Firewall App Blocker — Make the Windows firewall usable #2512116

FYI, Malwarebytes Windows Firewall Control is also available on the Older Geeks web site.

In the past I had been reading theses:
      Internet Storm Center
      NewsBites
      OUCH!
      @RISK

to learning and try things out (you do it at your own level, to what you can understand). I have gotten lazy of late, but would recommend it based on past my past experiences.

To get Edge to update I had to run Help -> About Edge, twice. It did provide this Google Chrome message, saying version 109 is to be the last supported version for Win8.1 .

I typically print off the set of instructions, and then put the commands in a text file so it is easy to cut and paste with fewer typos.

My background involves computers and commands (from days of old), so how comfortable you feel will depend. I am good at some things and not at others.

More than a few years ago, I did create some WIM files but am not sure I was able to restore from it. There was mention of an ESD file by Woody and I think I did get that to work.
