    • in reply to: Essential Office — Fewer bells, fewer whistles #2586508

We just updated the version of Essential Office to v2.6.1.  Here are all of the changes since this article was written:
29/08/23 v2.6 Windows 10/11 Dark Mode support added
31/08/23 v2.6.1 Close button added to PDF viewer
French, German and Spanish dictionaries added to Word Processor (default can be set in Options)

    • It is actually a just portable installer. It’s just dumping all of it’s needed files into a single folder. This folder can be moved anywhere. You can also just select a different location during “install” such as a flash drive.

There is an uninstall process but it’s just deleting the folder.

    • in reply to: Upscayl — Killer robots are good at other things #2559704

This is Deanna the author of the article. First of all, as stated in the article, this program is for upscaling small images (small as in dimension) and then improving the resulting low resolution that occurs when enlarging a small photo.

Doing it on a high-resolution, large-size image could cause your computer and the software to be extremely overloaded.

This is not a photo retouching program as you are trying to use it.

That being said, I did run it on a few large images to see how much it taxed the system. It caused no more heating or system usage that running any video encoding program, benchmarking program, or other resource intensive software.

If your hard drive did go out then it already has a pre-existing condition.  By running a SMART test on the drive, you will see that it was probably already reallocating bad sectors before using Upscayl incorrectly.

I have had hard drives go out dozens of times and have replaced hundreds of customer hard drives. Software is never the cause but always the last thing a hard drive was doing so it’s easy that software gets blamed.

      Lanshark,

ClearDiskInfo auto updates itself. It does this in the background immediately upon running it. It is a pretty useless programs if it doesn’t have the latest hardware info. That said, it does not take you to any websites to do this. If that is happening to you, you probably have an infection on your computer.

Hiya, folks, and Happy New Year!
      Great article, Ben; many thanks!
From it, though, here’s something that sorta bites me.The oldergeeks.com website offers a free download of Clear Disk Info v3.1.0.0, which is a fine piece of software. However, the installation process immediately goes to the Clear Disk website and downloads v4.0.0.0, for which they charge a $20 license fee.
It seems to me that they are violating the spirit of oldergeeks.com. I don’t do Facebook, so I can’t tell the Elder Geek. Maybe you can…

I have not been able to reproduce this issue from 3 computers and 3 browsers.. Our listing is in need of an update for the program (will be done later) but when I run the program it quickly auto-downloads the update, renames the file, and just runs.  As satrow said, I also believe you may have a redirector infection or some other malware.  Run Malwarebytes from our main page at OlderGeeks.com and see if it finds anything.

      Marvin,

Good, free antivirus software is quickly becoming a rarity as more and mors smaller companies like Avast and AVG get gobbled up by large companies. I cannot recommend any good ones that won’t constantly bug you about buying something (looking at you Avast and AVG). Malwarebytes is well worth the $39 per year.

Have a look at our bootable selections here:

I’m a big fan of Antivirus Live CD.

      Hey, all.

A few reports of CleanSweep2 and hits with anti-virus software. These are totally false positives due to some of the things the program does for you. If you are using a “falsely-detect-them-all-as-malware-and-let-the-gods-sort-them-out” kind of antivirus program, there are many more intelligent solutions out there. Give Malwarebytes a try. We run it on all 14 of our family and business computers. If we get a hit on Malwarebytes, we get real concerned because false positives rarely happen with it.

Here is the VirusTotal report for the zip file:

      https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/9bbf34cf3f2074789dc5da09148b52414ff94d25ca6276b28db1031be4942f68

There are two hits (false hits) for the actual executable on VirusTotal:

(Note: These two hits are from Cynet and SecureAge APEX. If you ever use VirusTotal, you already know that these two would find viruses in a picture of a baby seal.)

      AWRon,

What we are seeing in our store is people buying cheap laptops with 256GB or even 128GB SSDs out of financial necessity. Many could barely afford the laptop let alone the money or know how to upgrade the hard drive. Furthermore, when most average users run out of space it’s a sudden thing for them because they had to download a large file. When you’re sitting in a college chemistry class, you don’t always have the time to get up and install a new SSD during the lecture. But you still have to save your notes.

For things like this, I don’t find the program is obsolete in the least.

      A1ex,

Are you running the program as administrator? Also, if you have updates which are trying to finish downloading then the program cannot remove them because they are in use. Try going into your Windows Update settings and pause the updates. Reboot and then try again.

Hey all. k6jav is correct. The program is simply a portable tool to
install other free/open source tools. To uninstall those other tools,
you just uncheck any that were checked and click apply/update. Think of
it as the way you used to add and remove parts of Microsoft Live Essentials.

Once you have removed all the tools, just delete the program’s folder that you expanded on  install.

      Sorry for the confusion.

The author of the program is Drazen Beljan. He has no contact information. No Facebook. No Twitter. The guy has been a ghost for years. Heck, MG does not even list his full name.  Why? Because they don’t know it. We were good friends with the owner of the old freewarefiles website before they closed for medical reasons. That is where we got the full name.  No website provides any more info, including MG. I think MG just doesn’t know what a mirror is.
