      Susan,

      Thanks for the comment.

This is what they say – and the screen prints are what Outlook says.

I have considered moving to a diferent email supplier / eddress. However whilst I could do a group email tell my contacts of the change, getting all 921 contacts into a group would take quite a while. Also what about all the unknown to me folk who have this eddress as their security contact?

so I think I am stuck with pathway.

Pathcom assure me that they only use their exchange server for corporate clients – and a unix platformed server for residential clients – of which I am one.

So back to my original query / comment

I don’t use exchange, I do use Outlook 365. I don’t see alternatives to POP and IMAP. Are there any?

I also note that wikapedia includes some pretty disparaging remarks about Oauth 2.0

and perhaps – why should I care?

    • in reply to: Boot issues #2437271

dont know why it flipped – see previous for files. If I go directly to my MSI boards boot selection I get options which include the desired boot drive, and all is well. But this is every time I boot. If I go into the UEFI settings I get a screen like file One but without the popup. If I select any item in the list I get the popup shown which lists all possible boot sources except the one I want! Selecting any of the offered sources behaves as expected.

Down at the bottom of the screen  is “Hard disk….Priorities”. If I select that I get a screen like Two. selecting either of these lines I just get to select the option shown, or disable. Neither works. The OCZ-Agility drive seen in One is on SATA 5, and the desired boot is on SATA 2. And yes I am saving all the different options I have tried before exiting setup.

Note I have cropped to stay within the submit file limit.

On win 10 – start/Settings/System/about  and under “Device specifications” see “system type” which will spec the bitedness of both OS and CPU. There is something similar in win 7 if I recall correctly. Alternativelly I believe Belarc advisor (free down load) will also give this info.)

Linux has often, and rightly, been touted as a way to utilize an ‘old pc’. If a beginner embarks on this path – be warned – there is a trap here. First check if the old pc has 32 or 64 bit hardware. If 64, go right ahead. If 32, ask if there are specific programs you want to use? A good current example is Zoom – which will only run on 64 bit Linux. So whilst there are 32 bit Linux distros out there (though not so many these days) and they do have a variety of  apps available, you may not be able to run the app you want. Check first!

Why is “Thanks | Quote” always greyed out?

    • in reply to: Make driver roll back sticky #2276976

I hope Microfix is correct!. Thanks all for the replies. I do not use Vantage and I do have the update settings set via gpedit holding off general updates. However I may need the specific
Camera driver held static for far longer than I have set the quality and feature updates for (7 days and 180 days.)

I suppose I can copy the driver file(s) somewhere and then copy them back if needed.

    • in reply to: Are fingerprint readers useful? #2262477

Thanks for all the advice – but not getting to the root of my question.  What I am trying to get a best estimate of is how many of these sites I routinely log onto – like, my bank, Microsoft, FileZila, Crucial, Corel, evernote, Fedex, . . . . will be serviced by a fingerprint reader? Obviously I don’t expect anyone to go through my list, but I am just trying to get a sense of the extent of this function.

    • in reply to: Are fingerprint readers useful? #2262399

      PKCano and Alex5723,

In your experience, what fraction of sites requiring passwords accept the fingerprint reader / OS OK token? 10%, 50% or 90%?

    • After reading your interesting piece on “Office” := “Microsoft”  (remember “:=” in Algol means “becomes equal to”) I decided to try MS Edit on a sample 60 page Word document. It found  a total of 39 ‘problems’. Of these 38 were instances where there were two spaces and it felt one was enough, and in one case where there was no space and it felt one was appropriate.

Whoopy doo! AI saves the day!

Ah – perhaps that was unfair? I discovered that in the Editor settings, many checks were turned off. Turning them all on produced – exactly the same result!

      Paul,

True, and I knew that but misreported – my apologies, and thanks to pointing it out.

      Rick,

First thing I checked – always on ethernet – was the ends, without any effect. I had hesitated over substituting the cable because it was difficult but you pushed me over the edge on that, and it did fix the problem. Not furniture – the cable goes up the wall through the loft and down the wall – maybe a rat!! So I just have to climb up there with another long cat 5 cable  – rats!

      Thanks to all.

OK I now have enough data to be confused as well as upset – as follows:

With ethernet disabled and wifi enabled in network connections

All My Lan reports Up speed as 144 Mps, Down Speed as 300 Mbps

Robocopying 2 of 1.1 GB files reports Speed as 1.2 Mbps

OOpsla browser and native internet speed tests offered Download of 30 Mbps and Upload of 16 Mbps

With ethernet enabled and wifi disabled in network connections

All My Lan reports Up speed as 10 Mps, Down Speed as 10 Mbps

Robocopying 2 of 1.1 GB files stalled after copying the first file – tried three times.

OOpsla browser and native speed tests offered Download of 9.5 Mbps and Upload of 9.5 Mbps

Note that with the same hardware I have, in the past, measured over 200 Mbps  over  wired ethernet. And yes I have tried unplugging and replugging.

I believe ethernet adaptors report their speed capability. How is this done? Could the setting on the ethernet be corrupt? This port is direct off the motherboard
