    • in reply to: Windows 95 anyone? #2699140

I just remember being overawed by the upgrade from 3.1. Getting used to the Start Menu and the rest of the new GUI, etc. It was a fantastic upgrade (for me anyway), and I don’t think any subsequent new Windows versions had quite the same wow factor as that one. Happy days!

      Hi, I’ve got a QNAP TS-453D.

      Thanks, Rob

Anyways what fixed it for me was to open each category (i.e. Virus Threat and Protection) and look to see if there was another subcategory flagged.

Thanks for the tip. I tried that but nothing doing I’m afraid. I also toggled each category off and on (or on and off, depending on what the existing setting was), which didn’t work for me either.

The thing is, this is basically a clean out-of-the-box Windows 11 already.

Nice to know we have the option to install over the top (I had no idea!), but I’m not quite ready to go down that road just yet. It’s taken me long enough to get it set up ‘just so’!

Thanks. I perused all the reputation-based settings, but they are already on.

There’s enough posts out there to make me realise there’s probably no easy fix for this, and so I’m resigned to hoping it’ll get fixed in a future update. (Until they break it again!)

I ran a full scan to no avail. Her laptop doesn’t have any cleaners on.

Thanks for the tips everyone. Some useful ideas there.

My own laptop has two SDD drives, the second of which I only use for backups that are then copied to my NAS.

So I just need to set up some plans in Macrium now. Will do that today.

      Thanks for the tip, b.

I’ve tried all of them (except the last one: turn the icon off so it’s out of sight, out of mind!), but no luck.

Oh well, it may be something MS fix in a future update.

Just wanted to say thanks for these really useful guides. My wife has just got a new W11 laptop, so I followed the guide to get it all setup. (My first experience with W11 by the way.)

Only one glitch (downloaded error in Windows Update), which was nothing to do with the guide of course.

I’ve filed them away for next time.

      Thanks again.

Sorted it. The 20% off link is no longer on the Macrium website, but is still accessible via a banner ad in the software’s top toolbar. I’ve just bought my 4-pack licence before it disappears!

    • in reply to: Bringing in the new year with a backup #2513848

Macrium has a 20% off sale at the moment; good until Jan 3rd (tomorrow). I’m thinking of buying the 4-device licence, which will cover our household.

EDIT: the sale seems to have disappeared today (2nd). I was pretty sure the banner said until 3rd Jan when I looked yesterday. Oh well!

Thanks for the videos. I’ve just downloaded the free trial and doing a backup of my laptop. Will do my PC next.

    • in reply to: Fonts missing – displaying Wingdings? #2509125

      Phew – success!

Having tried the usual DCIM/SFC things, I was at a loss to know what to do. Then I found a website that has three font restore *.reg files, and I realised that even though Explorer was gibberish I could still see my Sync icon. So I downloaded them into Sync on my good laptop, logged into my admin account on my corrupted PC, ran each of them, restarted, and all was well.

I was worried I was going to have to end up doing a Reset PC, which I really didn’t want to do unless I had to. Anyway, all’s well that ends well, as they say!

    • in reply to: What kind of backup do you need? #2484630

Well, I think this will be my first post, so I’m no longer a lurker I guess!

My syncing setup is a bit of a mish-mash built up over time, which I probably need to rationalise / sort out one day.

I use SyncThing to auto-sync between our home devices (2 x laptops, 2 x mobile phones, 1 x PC, 1 x QNAP NAS). I use (paid) SyncBackPro to run manual backups for the things I don’t autosync to the NAS, and which I don’t need instant remote access to. Finaly, I use (free) sync.com to sync some other things that I want access to on our mobile devices.

I then sync from the NAS to (paid) Backblaze nightly using one of the NAS backup apps.
