AskWoody PlusOver in the “Out of band for Print Nightmare is out” thread, user rick41 commented that his “(Original version of post with link to article was rejected.)”
https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/out-of-band-for-print-nightmare-is-out/#post-2376055
So I wonder why.
-
rd23
AskWoody PlusWell, this time it worked, so I’m not sure what went wrong before.

AskWoody PlusEarlier this month I tried replying to a thread, but my original post, now seen as message #2362718, was rejected as spam, until I removed the direct link to the article.
I will re-create is here, to let it get caught again by the spam filter, in the hopes that the “sb” I was told to confer with in the rejection will explain.
The link I tried to post was to Find and Delete Duplicate Files and Photos in Windows
I believe that the item I posted was germane to the topic being discussed, and I wasn’t trying to sell something. My first thought was that giving a link to a “competing” advice site might be a “no no”, but I couldn’t find anything in the rules prohibiting that.
And, I remembered that my last several posts have been flagged by the spam filter, until I edited out the direct links. Yet I see other posts with direct links.
-
rd23
AskWoody Plus“Find and Delete Duplicate Files and Photos in Windows” at http://www.winhelponline.com mentions my favorite quick and dirty approach in “Method 2: Using HashMyFiles”.
We should expect that Nirsoft has at least one utility that does this.
(Once again, my original post was blocked as spam. I have to remove the exact link to the article.)
-
rd23
AskWoody PlusWhat I was trying to clarify, but ran afoul of the spam filter, is that the Windows Club article had a link to C o d e P l e x, which has a link to “DISM GUI moved to GitHub” on “Mike C’s Tech Blog” so we should clarify if we are talking about the ancient “mikecel79” program, or the “DISM_GUI by Dirk Paehl” the newsletter is talking about.
-
rd23
AskWoody PlusHow does this relate to the one described in “DISM GUI is a graphical interface for the DISM Command Line Utility” at the Windows Club?
(My intitial post was blocked as spam, so I retried with less detail.)

AskWoody PlusJust saw this post today, while looking for something else. In my list of topics to look into, for when I upgraded from Windows 7 to 10 (Home editions), was this item, from a site that discusses the topic:
https://www.cloudwards.net/wasabi-review/
Reading over the site gives the overview and details of the cloud backup scene.
The main practical consideration is that Internet connections in general are fast down, but slow up. Second is who do you want to pay for how much storage, and will your ISP allow that much data, or will that cost extra, too.

AskWoody PlusOne answer to my question is found at https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/windows-10-repair-cannot-uninstall-last-quality/cb3a2f3a-df1f-41d0-b886-58e0c4066b44 with the command: wmic qfe list brief /format:table
whose last few lines are shown here:
Security Update KB4541338 NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM 4/1/2020 Security Update KB4552152 NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM 5/7/2020 Security Update KB4560959 NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM 7/13/2020 Security Update KB4561600 NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM 7/13/2020 Update KB4556799 NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM 7/15/2020
That answer gives a similar command to remove a specific update.
And running the command before and after letting the WRE do would show if or what anything was done.

rd23
AskWoody PlusAnd following PKCano’s tip in another thread, using Control Panel, Programs adn Features, Installed Updates, I see that it shows the KB4556799 May Cumulative was installed 7-15, vs. what View Update History shows as “Sucessfully Installed on 6/2/2020.”
-
rd23
AskWoody PlusA quick look inWindows own Event Viewer, Applications and Service Logs\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdateClient\Operational, showed the same two updates installed 7-12.
So it seems that the WRE supposed uninstall of the “Latest Quality Update” actually didn’t do anything. But why did it run a while and say it was “Done”?
-
rd23
AskWoody PlusShort version of my question: After using the Windows Recovery Environment, Troubleshoot, Advanced Options, Uninstall Updates, Latest Quality Update, how can which update it removed be determined?
On my Windows 10 Home version 1909, Update History, Quality Updates, shows two “Successfully installed on 7/12/2020”:
- 2020-06 Security Update for Adobe Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1909 for x64-based Systems (KB4561600)
- 2020-06 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1909 for x64-based Systems (KB4560960)
Nirsoft’s “Windows Updates History Viewer” shows the same.
The WRE uninstall tool doesn’t say which update is getting uninstalled.
Is there any way to tell after the fact?Looking at the Master Patch list for June 2020 shows that I don’t have that SSU KB4560959 mentioned in earlier posts.
Could that have been the one uninstalled?
Or did the uninstall not actually do anything, even though it said “Done”?-

AskWoody PlusThe answer to the original question of “How can you keep track?” would be some sort of notekeeping system, like Microsoft’s OneNote or similar.
The original sources of the tips could be entered, then what key you did what to, along with the date. (And then put a comment for the key in “Registrar Registry Manager” that points to the OneNote entry.) You might find that even having a screen shot saved of the general area of that key is useful to see the context.
Later on, you can log whether the change had its intended effect, or any bad effects, so should then be avoided in the future.

AskWoody Plus“Registrar Registry Manager” has been out there forever. For tangling with the registry, it has been well worth the money.
-
rd23
AskWoody PlusSome third party registry editors allow entering your own notes in a Description field, that also comes chock full official and/or useful descriptions.
E.g., looking around that area mentioned, I found several descriptions of what the entries are for, along with a note using my intials “rd” that I “Set 10-16-11” per a particular KB.
(This is on my Windows 10 machine, so I now need to look why I did that change long ago.)
(Also, the third party registry editor I’m using is a paid commercial product, not a freeware or open source project.)

AskWoody PlusThe GUI is clipped on a screen with non-standard settings.
I.e., the last row does not show.I have a “custom scale factor” and also I just noticed that Windows 10 has a “Let Windows try to fix apps so they’re not blurry” setting on “On” so something unusual is happening.
The custom scale factor was carried over from my upgrade from Windows 7 in February, and I didn’t know about this other setting until just now, so don’t know what it really affects.
