Susan,  thank you very much. I appreciate your quick response.  However,  I looked at the list but did not see KB4586083 Security and Quality update for .NET (for windows 7 64 bit).  Should this update be installed or deferred?  Thank you.

Susan,  10-28-20:  Just downloaded the master patch list and it still shows DEFER for all of the versions of Windows and Office yet the the banner on Ask Woody shows a “4”.   My question is:  What updates are safe to install on  win 10, Win 8.1, Win 7 and Office 2016, 2013, and 2010?  Thanks for updating the master patch list so the rest of us have guidance on what to install and not install.  It is appreciated.

Susan,  thanks for letting us know on master patch list.  I plan on waiting to do patches when you have updated the list.  Thank you also for taking over from Woody and providing the information on patches to the rest of us.  It is appreciated.

    • in reply to: Patch Lady – just a kind reminder about Office 2010 #2296517

If you have an ESU, would you still be able to get Office 2010 patches after the EOL for Office 2010?  I am currently getting patches for office 2010 with the ESU although Office has not hit  EOL so it is probably still available to everyone (?).  I plan to upgrade Office, but do not really want to go to subscription version, when I switch to new PCs in the near future and would like to only have to do the upgrade when I switch computers.  Or would switching to interim solution such as using Opatch or another software be a viable solution or is Microsoft going to continue to patch those of us with ESU?

Thanks very much for letting me know the timing of the latest July sheets.  I appreciate all the work that it takes to keep it updated and your expertise on deciphering the MS output.

    • in reply to: New Win7 Extended Security Updates licensing package #2285386

In response to Defcon 3.  Why do all of the win 7 windows July updates on the master patch list on the sheet, Windows7/Server 2008R2, say DEFER as of 8-1-20?  All of the Office 2010 July updates are also DEFER- KB4484382, Kb4484456 etc. Why?

Susan B, I’ve looked at the 20-05-12 windows updates.xlsx and saw that you said to defer KB4555449 Service Stack update.  Note:  both my desktop and laptop are on ESU.  My desktop has this KB as the only one in the list on Windows Update and my laptop does not list this KB at all in Windows Update (but has KB4556399 .NET update, dated 2020-05, kb4556836 Monthly rollup dated 2020-05 and KB4484384 Excel update.) I have all of the previous previous service stack updates installed.  I know that the service stack updates need to be installed by themselves so why the deferral on the service stack update?  I believe that it has been noted that you need the service stack updates to be able to see the other updates.  Is this the correct interpertation?  Thanks for your assistance.  It is greatly appreciated.

    • I just tried to look up KB4528069 on Microsoft Update Catalog since this was mentioned in Woody’s Computerworld article and I wanted to see the tests so I could make sure, again, that my ESU are setup correctly.  The Microsoft Update Catalog does not have any information on this KB4528069.  Is the number correct?  Thanks to all at ASKWoody.

    • I have two computers on ESU. Both the ESU’s were installed successfully at the time that I received the keys through Harbor Computer Services.  I also installed the January service stack update KB4536952 on both on 1-27-20.  After reading about the last minute update, KB 4538483, I installed the KB 4538483 on both the laptop and the desktop.  The desktop had three KB before the install of KB4538483.  After the install and then required reboot of the computer, the desktop had 4 KB: 4484267 Excel security, 4484163 Outlook 2010 security, KkB 890830 malicious software removal tool and KB4537820 Security Quality Rollup Win 7 X64.

The laptop, also a Win 7 X64, only had three updates before the install of the KB4538483:  KB4484267 Excel security, KB4484162 Outlook 2010 security and KB890830 Malicious software tool.  After installation and running the check for updates, it still only has 3.  It did not pick up KB4537820.  I tried several restarts and still no KB4537820.  WHY?

Also, neither the laptop nor the desktop picked up KB4537767 Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 11 for Windows.  IE is not my preferred browser.  Could that be the reason it was not offered?  I would think that it should be because IE is so integrated into the Windows 7.

2020-02 Servicing Stack Update for Windows 7 (KB4537829) was also not on the list of updates offered on Windows Update.  I have been installing these service stack updates by themselves as per directions from PKCano.  Thanks PKCano.

Anyone else had issues with just getting the updates after successfully installing the ESU and the doing a last minute install of the KB4538483?  Glad that I am waiting on installation per ASKWoody.   Hopefully this will be resolved soon.

    • With respect to the patches offered by Microsoft in January, why are KB4484243, Security Update for Excel 2010 and KB4484243 Security update for Office 2010 on the defer list? I cannot find a discussion of either patch on AskWoody.  It would be educational to see the logic for the defer listing.  Thank you to PK CANO for advice on the KB4534310.  Since I had my computers set to FIT, I had no issues, yet, with the install of KB4534310.

    • After reviewing the list of updates on both my computers to see whether i should  install or defer, I found that all of the patches (KB4484243, KB4484236, KB 4535102, KB4534310 and KB4503548) on my computers are in the defer category. I plan on waiting to install anything until the fix for KB4534310, the Security Monthly Quality Rollup is released.  Per Microsoft, this KB causes the black screen when wallpaper is in stretch mode.  Microsoft anticipates a solution will be available mid February.  Is it possible to install this if your computer wallpaper is NOT in stretch mode (Both of mine are in FIT mode) or is it better to wait for the fix?   This is the first month that I did not have an update that I could install.

    • I was planning to install the updates as indicated by the Master Patch list and may have found a discrepancy between the 2020-01-14 Pre-Win 10 Updates Excel and PDF versions of the patch list.  Just under KB4534251,  the PDF version shows 4535102 while the Excel version shows 4535104 while not showing the 4535102 and the PDF version does not show the 453104 version.  Since 4535102 is on both of my computers (Win 7 Pro), I assume this is the correct one for me.  However, since the 4535102 is a .NET patch, I plan to defer installing that per the Excel version of the Master Patch list.  KB4503548 (released on 8-13-19 and which I deferred per the Master Patch list at the time), returned this January to Windows update on both my computers. I assume that I should defer this one as well.  Is that correct?  Also what is the reasoning for deferring the .NET updates?  Thank you very  much for the help and assistance from all of those on AskWoody.

    • in reply to: Closing out the patching year … #2037950

Thank you Susan.  By your response, I am assuming that I would need to put in the fix KB even though I did not install the KB4484127.  Is this correct?  Thank you for your  assistance.  It is really appreciated.  Have a good New Years.

    • in reply to: Closing out the patching year … #2037547

I am running Office 2010 Pro 32 bit.    I did not install KB4484127 based upon November Master Patch list.    The November Master Patch list includes a link to the following  Microsoft Office article :
      “Access error: “Query is corrupt”
This Microsoft article states that for Office 2010 this issue is caused by KB4484127.  Since I did not install this,  is the issue still present on my computer or is this a moot point for my computer?   If is issue is moot for my computer, do I need to install the December patch that fixes it?  What is the December Patch that resolves the issue?  I do not use Access very much but would like to have this issue resolved so I do not run into the issue when I do use Access next.   Thank you very much Ask Woody for the excellent help this year in keeping my Win 7 computer going.  Still need to decide about what to do next month.  It may be going to Win 10 since my CAD software is a Windows based program.

    • I  installed the November updates prior to getting the KB453206 Service stack update on windows update.  It arrived by itself.  Knowing that this should be installed by itself (Thanks to PKCano in a prior posting on the last service stack update), I installed it on my desktop with  Windows 7 Pro  and then rebooted.  It took a while but came up normally.  It also arrived by itself on the laptop.  I then installed it on my laptop with Win 7 pro and rebooted.  It also took a while to come up.  I do not seem to be having the issues mentioned above at this time.  Perhaps I was lucky.
