    • The drives are both 7200rpm and CMR based. Both have the same type of physical SATA connections.

Ok, things have become weird. Turns out the 10TB drive does not like being assigned the drive letter Z. It’s fine with G and W. With G and W the drive starts out faster than the 8TB drive then settles down to the same performance as the 8TB drive. I restarted the system so there was no holdover connection issue with having had the 8TB in the slot.

I never knew drives could be biased against certain drive letters. Any idea why Z is a problem?

      Thanks,
      Steve

    • I have SATA based removable drive bays. I use the same bay and thus the same SATA connection for backing up the system. Each drive used the same connection.

      Thanks,
      Steve

    • Thanks for the information.

I read the information on the links you posted and read other articles. I assume SRUDB.dat is needed if there are problems with the system. Will the Diagnostic Policy Service recreate the dat file when it finds problems?

Some people deleted the sru folder and mentioned it never came back, which other people said was a problem since errors would not be logged. I assume deleting the sru folder is not good–true? BTW, my previous 16,000 log files were deleted by my system and only a few log files exist currently.

      Thanks,
      Steve

Can Defender be set up to update frequently while Windows updates are deferred?

      Thanks,

Thanks for the info but I did use the Norton uninstaller. Norton just won’t quit!

I’ve used Norton since its early days. It was great for many years. Their marketing department has totally taken over. It’s now time to move on. Any suggestions of a good substitute that’s not from Russia, Romania, or Croatia?

      Thanks,
      Steve

Yep, it’s a Norton issue. I tried the open Norton’s GUI and close it immediately trick. The problem goes away and the higher than normal Windows Explorer CPU usage drops. The Resource Monitor graphs show CPU spikes that quit with the Norton start/stop trick.

This also explains what happened with my home entertainment computer. Norton was bugging me so much with popups I let the subscription expire. That increased the bug factor. Norton kept telling me I didn’t have any protection, yet it was still working behind the scenes. Starting last night the computer’s fans started sporadically changing speed. Today I looked into the problem and noticed much higher than normal CPU usage was causing the fans to change. The culprit was Norton even though it was supposedly not working. It had downloaded the update that caused the problem. I used Norton’s uninstall tool and the problem finally went away.

BUT, Norton wasn’t through with me. Later it popped up a notice about reinstalling it!! And, there was no way to tell it stop bugging me permanently. I could only pause the notice.

So the final question is, HOW DO YOU TOTALLY GET RID OF NORTON???

      Thanks for letting me rant,
      Steve

Moonshine, sorry I wasn’t clear and caused you additional work. I actually meant I couldn’t find the new calculator before I started this topic. I saw the file when I followed your SSA link in your first thread. I imagine you did look like your avatar when you read my earlier response.

Moonshine, thanks for the link. I tried finding a new version of the software but all I found was the online calculator.

EricB, thanks for the feedback. I had never run into this situation before.

Thanks very much for the responses and questions.

The software is a Social Security calculator from SSA (Calculator.msi with a 11/24/2019 date) that takes yearly income  information then spits out SS payments based on when payments are started. I used the program before on a windows 7 machine I had. It’s not a major piece of software. It would just be nice to have to do what-if scenarios.

I just ran InstallSheild to see what the error message is ….and …. NO ERROR. The only difference this time is I specified the program was for me and not everyone. Rick, this seems to be backwards from your comment that the installer will self-elevate if I chose ‘all users.’

Ok, the oddness continues. InstallShield said it would install the program in Program Files(x86). Instead it installed the program in my AppData\Local\Programs folder. It runs from there. It just seems like an odd place for the program. Also, the program doesn’t show up in the list of programs because it’s in such an odd place. I’ll just create a shortcut and put it on the desktop.

      Again, thanks for the responses,
      Steve

FWIW, I opened the mail options in Outlook and changed the “New mail messages” font in Signatures and Stationery to black and was able to see the last line of an email. The rest of the message was still blank. Changing other fonts did not bring up the remainder of the message.

When MS has a fix will it be automatically updated even with auto updates off and updates not downloaded or installed until I check for updates? The Win10 update page mentions “We’ll ask you to download updates, except when updates are required to keep Windows running smoothly.”

I followed up on the add-ins comment. I don’t have adobe but I do have “Norton AntiSpam Outlook Plugin.” I wonder if Norton’s latest update is causing a problem. I haven’t updated anything else in my add-in list (as far as I know).

      I only have 4 active add-ins:
      –  Microsoft Exchange
      –  Norton AntiSpam
      –  OneNote Notes
      –  Outlook Social Connector 2016

I’m having the same issue. Outlook 2019 worked yesterday but not today. The message preview area shows text from emails but opening an email results in a blank message. Once in a while I see a brief flash of an item from an email then it’s gone. I’m running Win10 Pro 1909 and haven’t updated the software in a couple of weeks.

Everyone, thank you! I didn’t know if anyone would bother with this.
