    • in reply to: Just How Good IS Windows Defender Today? #1585306

There is a more recent article from PCMag reviewing several FREE antivirus solutions and again advising readers not to rely on Windows Defender.
      http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2388652,00.asp
At the least the opinions in the article are from someone with known credentials and are backed up by several detailed results from in house and independent Lab testing.
I know which I’d rather rely on.

    • I’m currently using uBlock Origin, with a specific set of built-in and 3rd party lists

Interesting post; just to clarify, this is uBlock Origin.

    • in reply to: How good is Windows Defender? Can I forego Sophos? #1583166

I wasn’t referring to malware at all, merely performance; namely the effect on computer system speed by using the various AV products.

    • in reply to: How good is Windows Defender? Can I forego Sophos? #1583162

As far as being “unobtrusive” is concerned, you should check the various AV testing sites for that information.
Generally, Defender is rated poorly for performance, despite being a built-in application.
I would definitely look elsewhere for a better product.

    • in reply to: Help for Win10 1607’s confusing Wi-Fi settings #1582719

But if you want to change the WiFi settings you need to be connected to the router w/ an Ethernet cable; if you change the router’s WiFi settings via a WiFi connection you risk losing access to the router.

Thanks, I didn’t know that and have been accessing via wifi…will change that.

Perhaps we are all going 3D…

    • Not ridiculous. True. Actually most of the time I don’t even use anti-virus. They aren’t even necessary actually. I have never had a problem.

If you don’t use antivirus, then how did you come up with these words of wisdom?
“All the other antivirus products do is slow performance, and wreck havoc.”
p.s Havoc is wreaked rather than wrecked…

    • Basically Defender is the only antivirus you will ever need. All the other antivirus products do is slow performance, and wreck havoc.

      A ridiculous generalization.

    • in reply to: fossamail? #1582150

      hello from copenhagen denmark.
I was wondering if some of you have tried fossamail a thunderbird replica in allmost anyway, but optimized by moonchild production.
I use it as my default mail software.
What mailclient do you use if any.:^_^:

I recently installed Fossamail on a spare machine, so I would have an alternative if Windows Live Mail became unavailable for Windows 10.
I find it a very good email client and installation/set up etc. was very easy.
I used Fossamail over Thunderbird because there is a 64 bit version.

I did the cumulative update to 1607, 14393.321 yesterday and thought I’d check to see how much space old Windows Update files were using.
      I certainly did not expect 3.99TB :confused:45746-dcu-for-c

    • in reply to: Unencrypted wifi #1580137

I am staying at a hotel that has unencrypted wifi, no password is required. I don’t plan on sending or accessing anything sensitive, and not going to check email.
What is the level of risk using the hotel network? How much more risky is it than an encrypted wifi network?

      Thanks

Using a VPN would be my suggestion.

    • in reply to: Outlook.com icon to desktop? #1580136

If you’re struggling with what’s been suggested, try this:

Next time you’re at Hotmail in your browser (ideally the page where you sign in), look at your address bar. At the extreme left-hand end there should be an icon. Drag and drop that icon on to your desktop.

      By far the easiest way.

    • Ultimately, aside from whether you have a faulty Windows Live Essentials installation, your problems are self-inflicted: by trying to force a lightweight email program (that’s actually far more accomplished than its Outlook Express predecessor) to do something you should be using a Word processor for.

And yes, I’ve used Windows Live Mail for years with none of the dramas you claim to be experiencing[/I].

Me too, I still find it the best program for email.

Good article, the list of Commands is very useful.

    • in reply to: Need Help Restoring Dead Laptop #1579713

I have used Macrium on the half dozen PC’s I’ve owned over the last few years. I’ve been able to restore individual files numerous time and an entire drive on a couple occasions. BUT, if I lose an entire PC to theft or disaster then I’m not sure I can restore a drive image to a completely different PC.

It’s something I’ve never tried and have no idea how Windows would cope with such a situation when it boots.

Apparently Macrium Re-deploy can restore an image to a replacement computer, in all but the free edition.
Fortunately I have not had to do it yet, but the instructions are in the Macrium KnowledgeBase.
