Is not %localAppData% one of the places where we don’t want anything to run from??

If your programs (installed in your HOME folder) are on a different partition, as is recommended, then you just overwrite the root partition without any other partition checked for HOME or SWAP. This option comes up in the install procedure if you choose manual install. Your installed programs, settings and other personal files are still there. At least that’s how I’ve done installs from Mint 8 upward.

And everything is still in the menu??
At any rate it is too late for that now:(

And for whomever said installing s/w can be a pain I am with you!

As for configuring, well one expects a learning curve. But after 2 years with Mint I still can not get it to tell me the correct time!!

You would want a CROSSOVER cable. The wires in the connector will not be in the same positions.

I installed Linux Mint 13 Maya (the last Long Term Support version) on VMware Player, installed gparted, filezlla, audacity, and libreoffice, and updated it to Linux Mint 14 Nadia. Everything seemed to go okay, and when I rebooted it seemed to be starting okay, it even said Linux Mint 14, but below that it printed a row of dingbats. I tried entering the password and hitting return, but that didn’t get me anywhere.

I can’t say from my little adventure that you would not be able to upgrade from 14 to 15, and then from 15 to 16, and 16 to 17, but I can’t say that you can either.

Darn I had this all written but hit the reply button again and it was washed away. How do I get to the auto saved content I typed anyone??

I found a link that I thought was telling me how to do what I wanted, http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2
by backing up and installing a new Mint then restoring but only data and a program list seem to be restored.
The author notes that there is away to do a real upgrade with apt repositories but says that is a task for an expert.
I am NOT there and will be sticking w/ 14

Alt Tab not working with the DOS screen? I seem to recall Ctr Enter or maybe Alt Enter switch between dos windowed and full screen.

CNC that brings back memories of a job I used to love, I wrote programs with WANG basic and Commodore 64 Basic.

      As

Atomic Clock is a free program for keeping your clock sync’d which you could try.

I think I have an elderly version of that!
I would suggest turning off the time sync and seeing how well the RTC does on its own.

you only need a RJ-45 Ethernet patch cable to connect your router to your computer

RG I often use the phrase patch cable when I mean a crossover cable.
Just trying to avoid confusion for a networking newbie.

I believe that upgrading between versions of Mint is now NOT supported, meaning keeping progarms already installed may be possible for a Linux guru but not us mere mortals. I am still on 14 so if I am wrong I would like to know it. Also because of this one should stick with a long term support version…..

Ok this was a long thread and I may have forgotten or mixed up a couple of things.
Please correct me if i am wrong here:

      1. You do NOT have a front panel USB socket.
      2. When you plug something in a particular M/B USB port you computer does not boot.

If #2 is true I would examine the port with a flashlight for a misaligned contact or stray matter. Blowing out w/ canned air shouldn’t hurt either.

Looks like everything on the CD is freeware or shareware and I am thinking Hiren’s Boot DVD 15.2 Restored Edition has non freeware ‘restored’. I did not actually visit any of the sites offering it. They seemed a bit questionable though WOT seemed to like most of them.
