I managed to transfer all my files from the EHD using the File Transfer Function across my network. Yes, it took forever. So I powered down mu old PC that had the EHD attached, powered down the EHD, and disconnected it. I turned off the Win 7 machine and connected the EHD and powerd it up. I went to Explorer and tried to look at the EHD and I get the “Cannot access” message. So my old PC can read the EHD but not the Win 7 machine? Seems odd to me.

That’s the same problem I’m having with my Kindle.

If you right click on the library and choose properties then you will get a dialog box that will allow you to add folders to the library, and to change the default save location for that library.

And don’t forget to backup your external hard drive!

I have an external HDD that I used for backups, music and pictures on my old XP machine. I unplugged it and moved it to my new Win 7 machine and set it as the backup. Later, I received a ‘problem’ notification. The PC could no longer access the drive and told me that file records were unreadable and may be corrupt. I moved the HDD back to my old XP machine and ran chkdsk. It went about replacing ‘invalid security ids’ with default security ids’. What?! I’ve never seen anything like this before. I had assumed my partition file got blasted or something, but this security id business is new. Hopefully I can recover the data. I’ll reformat the drive and try it again on Win7.

Anyone ever heard of any issues with moving older HDDs to a new machine?

When you unplugged your drive did you dismount it first? You could have corrupted it otherwise.

Well, the problem is that I’m almost certain that the computer isn’t in sleep mode or hibernate mode. This is because it is completely unresponsive, the power button, keyboard or the mouse don’t seem to have much of an effect. Normally I just press the power button to wake it up or if it’s sleep mode, any button should work. Regardless of that, I have checked the power options, but I had set them such that the computer wouldn’t do anything but dim the display and then turn off the screen after like fifteen and thirty minutes of inactivity respectively.

I’m not sure how to check for BIOS updates or if my drivers are up to date, however. I can only assume that they are, since the problem started as soon as I started using the computer and it was purchased less than a few months ago.

So what does the computer manufacturer say?

The drive shows up after the Kindle has been plugged-in for several minutes. Clicking on the drive shows a totally empty root directory and trying to copy to it fails.

There is no Kindle software that installs on Windows. I have uninstalled/rediscovered/reinstalled the driver without success.

When I have a chance I’ll compare the Registry entries for the Kindle between by desktop and laptop.

You could try going into Disk Management (Start > Run > diskmgmt.msc) and see if the drive shows up there (and has a drive letter attached to it).

If that doesn’t work, I’d uninstall the Kindle software, unplug the Kindle from your PC and then do the following:

      1) Click Start > Run, then type cmd. You should see the icon appear in the Start menu.

      2) Right-click the icon and select “Run as Administrator”

      3) In the command prompt, type the following commands:
      set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
      cd&systemRoot%System32
      start devmgmt.msc

      4) If you find the Kindle in this list now, right-click it and select “Uninstall”

This trick also works when you plug a device in right away that usually requires the driver software to be installed beforehand (HP printers, for example).

The drive shows up after the Kindle has been plugged-in for several minutes. Clicking on the drive shows a totally empty root directory and trying to copy to it fails.

I’ve now upgraded my laptop to Windows 7 and was able to plug my Kindle in successfully. That proves it isn’t a device or cable issue. It still fails on my desktop system. I’ve tried removing the driver without success. My power settings are as suggested above.

      Hi All

This worked for me, everything now is working fine.

      1. Click the Start Button type “msconfig” (without quotation marks) in the Search box, and then press Enter.

Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window.

      2. Click the “Services” tab, check the “Hide All Microsoft Services” box and click “Disable All” (if it is not gray).

      3. Click the “Startup” tab, click “Disable All” and click “OK”.

Then, restart the computer. When the “System Configuration Utility” window appears, please check the “Don’t show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts” box and click OK.

      Regards

      Braddy

That’s a “clean boot”. I expect Windows to be working just fine but your anti-malware sure isn’t. Any other application that requires its own service won’t be either.

I also have no problems seeing USB drives in Windows 7, both external hard disk drives and Flash drives. One thing you might want to do is open the Folder Options applet in Control Panel, click on the view tab, and uncheck “Hide empty drives in the computer folder”. I do note that my DVD drive doesn’t display in windows Explorer unless there is a disk in it even though the preceeding option is unchecked.

      Jerry

It displays but takes minutes to do so. Its contents show as empty and I can’t copy anything to it though.

    • in reply to: USB external hard drive LED lights #1189805

Thanks for your help. The USB drive is connected to the computer only via one USB cable. Windows 7 puts this same drive to sleep on my other Dell XPS 410 so it must be something else causing it not to shutdown properly even when the computer is shutdown.

Did you check the drive’s properties as others here have suggested?

    • in reply to: External device stops being recognized #1189795

Yes, I have several that works on XP, Vista and Windows 7 machines, some are even many years old. I have a 256 Meg that works, and they have not been in production for some time.

It works every time? It works when you plug it in after booting? Can you see its contents in Explorer?

    • in reply to: Task Bar occasionally won't Autohide #1189793

      David:

This tells me that the application was requesting focus without flashing the task bar button. At least, that’s why it would happen to me in earlier versions of Windows. When the task bar won’t autohide, have you tried bringing each window to the foreground, either by Alt+Tabbing or clicking on each task bar button?

That said, I did run into a situation in Windows 7 where, even after bringing each program to the foreground, and even after closing all programs, my task bar was stuck on visible until I rebooted. Truly annoying! I don’t often use my 7 installation yet, as I’m still building it, so I can’t offer much more from my own experience.

I have the same problem. It’s not a taskbar item; it’s a tray item. Killing and restarting explorer.exe works but many of the tray icons don’t come back because their programs fail to refresh them after explorer.exe is restarted.

So… Does anyone have a USB drive that works properly with Windows 7? Is this a general error?

    • in reply to: Windows7 #1189779

I’ve got a flash drive that works perfectly in Windows XP (laptop) but when I plug it in on my Windows 7 computer (desktop) it keeps going off and on. It shows for a few seconds and then goes off and keeps repeating that. Anyone have any ideas why it does that in Windows 7 and not XP?

It seems that a lot of us are having issues with external drives not working properly. No root cause found yet.

You can do everything you want without a 3rd-party product!

Go to Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management. Right-click on D: and Delete Volumne then right-click on C: and Extend Volume,
