      Sorted – PATH problem.

I have been advised that it is a good idea to do a clean Windows installation from time to time, as all sorts of rubbish gets into the system over time. which slows the computer down.ย  I’ve done it many times before and re-installed the software successfully without too much trouble.ย  So having sorted this problem myself, I will probably continue to do so.

i decided against that because I wanted a clean Windows.

      Maybe not next time…

I found Microsoft 365 among the Apps and when I clicked on i, it said “Click and Run”.ย  I have uninstalled it.ย  Both Word and Excel needed to repair themselves after I did this and seem ot beย  working now.ย  The problem I have is intermittent, so I won’t know if its been resolved for a while.ย ย  I will report back in a month if it has not recurred.ย  If it does recur, I will try out some of the other suggestions given here and also report back,

Thank you for your help – and also to everyone else who has chipped in.

      Thanks for this.

I’ve been running Office 2007 for 15 years or more without any issues, so may just take my chances.ย  I’m using lots of other old software as well.ย  I do have an up-to-date virus checker.

Any new verision of software you already involves climbing a new learning curve usally gaining nothing useful in the process, espcially in the case of Office.

I particularly object to making an annual payment to Microsoft so its 2007 or Libre Office.

Thanks for this.ย  I’m not aware of any Click to Run which might be installed on my PC – how could I find this out?ย  never heard ot Click and Run until now…..

My grandson is 15 so is unlikely to pay any attention to anything I say but I’ll try.

Thanks, will give that a go and report back.

No more fake McAfee messages, so I’m confident that “Captchamodern.top” was the problem.

Again thanks to all for help and advice

Since I “reset all settings” in Edge, there have been no more occurrences, which is not normal, so maybe I have got rid of it.

If it recurs, I will try Alex5723‘s suggestion first, and if that doesn’t work, will follow alejr‘s instructions.ย  I’m a but nervous about changing stuff in the system, but will grit my teeth….

Thank you again to everyone who has been offering help – I am always amazed and delighted a the support offered by strangers to strangers on these forums.

I ran all these and they found nothing dangerous.

I now belueve the problem is “captchamodenr.top” – see screendump below.

Don’t know why the virus checkers don’t find it.

      It is not in Firefox.

Instruction for ermonving from Edge was “reset all settings”.ย  I’ve done this, and will see what happens.

No, I retrieved both of these from teh Notifications tab at the bottom left had side of the screen.

There were several more which Avast blocked when I tried to open them.

Next time a new one appears, I will try to get a live screen grab.

Not sure whether its Admin or Standard ID.ย  But it seems happy to run, deletes lots of files.

How do I run in Safe Mode as administrator?

      Thanks

      Screenshots attached.

The first looks diticnlty dodgy – and I’ve never hadย  McAfee account.

The second has McAfee in the URL, but again have never had a McAfee account.

      Thanks for helping!

Have just seen your later commentsย  saying the are not brwoser notiifcaations.ย  If not what are they, and what do I do about them?

      Re-install Windows from scratch?

    • in reply to: Unwanted McAfee notifications #2452125

      HI,

They are not email messages – they are notifications I assume from browsers.

      But thanks for helping.

    • in reply to: Unwanted McAfee notifications #2452124

      Hi

      Thanks for your advice.

But I’m not sure I want to block all notifications.ย  I think I have blocked them in EDGE which I suspect is the source of the problem so we’ll see if that helps.

And I am also concerned that something more sinister is going on here.ย  I’ve never had a McAfee subscription, and am already running virus protection so these messages are presumably lying.ย  It seems unlikely that they are actually from McAfee so someone else is managing to access my computer and send them.

I ran MCPR yesterday and it appeared to remove all McAfee files, but when I ran it again today, it did exactly the same thing.

I guess a clean install of Windows is probably required….

Again, thanking for trying to help!
