AskWoody LoungerI put Office 2003 on my Win10 release version without problems. I have basic needs for it so can’t speak to the more advanced features.
Thanks Berton, that’s very helpful. Can I ask if you use Outlook 2003 and whether you’ve had any problems with it? That’s the only 2003 programme I had some difficulties with on Windows 8/8.1.

AskWoody LoungerNow that the production version of Windows 10 has been available for almost a month, can anyone comment on how Office 2003 works in practice on it (as opposed to the earlier test builds) and whether there have been any problems?
Thanks.

AskWoody LoungerI personally prefer SEO Doctor as it grades website with a red, amber or green flag and also shows immediately what needs to be improved to increase the grade. Very easy to use.

AskWoody LoungerThanks to both of you. I’m certainly hoping it will work but would still be interested to hear from anyone out there who’s actually done it…?
PS I’m surprised (and impressed!) to hear that O2000 works on Win 8.1. I gave up trying with O2002 on Win 8 owing, amongst other things, to the password system incompatibility problem on Outlook.

AskWoody LoungerThanks to both. Problem sorted now (although PowerPoint doesn’t make it easy!).

AskWoody LoungerMany thanks. The clock is excellent for what I wanted but I cannot get the desktop timer to run on my pc (W8.1) despite using the compatibility settings etc.

AskWoody LoungerIf adequate free backup services exist – which they do – why pay an ongoing monthly fee if it’s unnecessary?
-
WSVictor Delta
AskWoody LoungerI used mklink to create symbolic links to do this.
e.g.
mklink /J C:UsersuserDropboxpublictest “C:UsersuserPicturesdirectorywithsubdirectorys”Just change dropbox to skydrive (or whatever) and user to appropriate name. Also the pictures directory to whatever is appropriate. That way you can choose which folders to put in the cloud without having them in the skydrive/dropbox etc. fo9lders or duplicating them.
Not ideal, but it works.
That’s an interesting idea, and a new one on me. Where do you actually put/write the mklink lines of code?

AskWoody LoungerSkydrive does, just put them into the SD folder.
Thanks, but I’m sorry if I didn’t make it totally clear, what I want to do is find a system that allows one to select particular files and folders where they currently are within one’s overall (logical) filing structure. I don’t want to have to move those files to one big SD etc folder. That’s what I really like about SugarSync (and, to a lesser degree, Spider Oak)!
PS MQG1023 – Flickr now provides 1TB of free storage for photos!

WSVictor Delta
AskWoody LoungerThanks, but those don’t allow you to select existing files and folders for backup, do they?

AskWoody LoungerFWIW, the only way I’ve been able to get rid of the #’s in Windows 7/8 is to completely remove the connection profile and then recreate it.
How (in Windows 8)?
-
WSVictor Delta
AskWoody LoungerIt sounds like somehow additional network connection profiles were created. If so, then delete all except for the one you are currently using, i.e., the one which works.
Yes, that’s what I’d like to do… but where/how are the profiles stored please?
“You should be able to right click the connection name and rename it” – doesn’t appear to be an option in Windows 8 unless I’m looking in the wrong place…?

AskWoody LoungerHi FUN downtime
Very many thanks for that. I followed your instructions, including using the Google DNS, and the wi-fi seems to be working again now.
I’ll keep it under review but thank you so much.
PS Hovering over wi-fi icon shows name of network followed by 2. Any thoughts on how to get rid of the numbers…?

AskWoody LoungerThanks for all the suggestions. Last night I could not gain access via wi-fi and so ran the troubleshooter as suggested. It could not fix the problem and concluded “Wi-fi doesn’t have a valid IP configuration”.
I then switched off the wi-fi and connected the pc and router via an ethernet cable. This time the network symbol appeared in the system tray but again with an exclamation mark and no internet access. Ran the troubleshooter and again it couldn’t fix the problem but concluded “DNS server isn’t responding”.
Left the cable connected overnight and this morning, when the pc awoke from it’s slumbers, the exclamation mark soon disappeared and I’ve had an internet connection all day!
Don’t know if this provides any more clues as to what’s wrong? Certainly looks as if it’s a network issue rather than just a wi-fi problem.
By the way, hovering over the network icon shows the name of the router with a ‘4’ after it. I do wonder if this shows that the pc has multiple network settings stored for the one router and is therefore getting confused. Is there any way to flush out the old settings and start again with a clean slate (I’ve tried ‘Forget’ the wi-fi network and then reconnecting, but the numbers persist)? Also, should the network and wi-fi names be the same or could this be causing conflicts perhaps. Just thoughts…
Thanks again.
PS norepli – I have already tried ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew to no avail.

PS I see the Avant Forum has returned today, after being down for at least 10 days.
