Is Microsoft switching machines from “Download but let me choose” to “Install updates automatically”?

I’ve heard from several people, in several different contexts, that Microsoft had switched their machines from “Download updates but let me choose whether to install them” to “Install updates automatically.”

In the past, over many years, I’ve always found that those changes were accidentally made by the owner of the machine, by someone else using the machine, or occasionally by programs that decided to take the situation into their own hands.

Now, I’m not so sure.

If your machine has changed recently, I’d sure like to hear from you. Maybe we can get to the bottom of this…
