Joseph’s Machines: Pass the Pepper
OK. I’m going to violate my policy shunning YouTube links on the main blog page. (Yes, I know any YouTube link brings along trackers.)
Ya gotta see this:

Born: Don’t install Sophos UTM 9.703 firmware
Looks like Sophos has a big problem on its hands. Again. Per Günter Born:
Administrators of the Sophos UTM appliance should not install the recently released Sophos UTM 9.703 firmware, as may will cause massive issues. Sophos has pulled this firmware update. Sophos UTM is a complete, hardware-based security solution for corporate networks, including firewall etc.
The list of problems reads like a missive from a company that… uh… doesn’t test its patches very well.
Sound familiar?

Welcome back, Windows Secrets Free subscribers
I’ve heard from many of you — and I’m digging out from under an avalanche of email. I greatly appreciate all of your greetings. Yes, it’s true, we’re BACK. And, yes, we aren’t part of a big company anymore. The inmates are truly in charge of the asylum.
If this is your first time on the new, improved Lounge, please register for a free username (upper right corner). You need a functioning email address (but don’t try to use an email address as your username). Then feel free to explore — pitch in and help, ask questions, question answers! Although our roots are in Windows, you’ll quickly find that we have our noses in many other topics. At this point, we have 140,000 registered users and well over a million posts.
If you want to ask a question, find a forum (quick links to Windows 10, Win8.1, Win7, Surface, Office, or browse through our Forums list), scroll down to the bottom, type in a good synopsis for your “Topic,” then give us all the pertinent details.
If you want to reply to something that’s been posted, click Reply.
Give it a try. You’ll catch on in no time.
Most of all, kick off your shoes and stay awhile. There’s a remarkable group of volunteers around here. Good folks.

I’m closing off the COVID-19 forum
There’s been a whole lotta heat and precious little light on the COVID-19 forum of late.
Ergo, I’m shutting it down. You’re welcome to view what’s there, but you won’t be able to post anything additional.

Want to Reply to a post? Hit Reply twice.
Another miscellaneous bug that’s inexplicably appeared.
If you want to reply to a post — and have your reply appear “nested” (indented) under the original post — you have to click the Reply button twice.
If you only click Reply once, your response goes to the bottom of the pile.
We’re workin’ on it….
UPDATE: The devs tell me it’s been fixed. That was quick. Let me know if you hit any problems.

Any HTML/CSS pros in the audience? Want to help with the Free newsletter?
Tracey and I are looking for a code jockey to help bring Plus Newsletter articles over to the new Free Newsletter.
Our problem: The distribution software we’re using for the Plus Newsletter, MailChimp, does a very good job of automatically formatting things so they look good in Outlook.
But the software we’re using for the Free Newsletter, SendGrid (which is considerably cheaper than MailChimp at the volumes we’re anticipating), does a lousy job of rendering in Outlook.
We need someone who can take the raw HTML that we use in MailChimp and make it Outlook-friendly in SendGrid.
Anybody out there up to the task?

Final beta test version of the FREE Newsletter headed out shortly
We’re just about ready to re-introduce the free Windows Secrets Newsletter.
Now rechristened as the (what else?) AskWoody FREE Newsletter it’s, uh, free.
Each week we’ll send out one full article from the Plus Newsletter, a recap of the latest happenings on the AskWoody web site (just like we have in the Plus Newsletter), and an offer for folks to join us as Plus Members. It’s a great way to sample what we’re up to, to see if it’s worth making a donation.
If you’d like to take a look, please sign up. And encourage your friends to join us, too!
