I have been having a continuing problem with Chrome 64-bit crashing running under Windows 10 64-bit. I have tried just about everything and nothing helps. I just noticed that Chrome is installed in the Program Files (x86) folder and am wondering if that can be the problem. As a 64-bit program shouldn’t it be in the Program Files folder? Can someone with 64-bit Chrome let me know where it is installed on their machine?

    Thanks

I’ve just downloaded and installed what is labelled as the latest 64-bit version of Google Chrome (v54.0.2840.00) and, yes, it installed into the Program Files (x86) folder. A quick Google shows this is standard for Chrome. (?!)

If you run Chrome and open Task Manager you’ll see whether your installation is 64-bit (‘cos, if it’s 32-bit, you’ll see either (*32) or (32 bit) alongside the process name.)

      Hope this helps…

Thanks Rick. I guess that’s not my problem. I’ll keep working on the crash issue.

You and I might be sharing similar Google Chrome problems, what exactly happens when it crashes? And, how do you recover the last tabs at the time of the crash?

It simply closes at seemingly random times. When I restart it, it offers to restore my tabs and does so successfully. I haven’t been able to find any references to this problem on the Internet. Are you having the same problem?

It simply closes at seemingly random times.

As a matter of interest, how often do you restart your device?

The reason I ask is because, before I gave up using Chrome, I noticed that it uses temporary files extensively, so re-booting may help.

(For years I have used a .reg file to point both the TEMP and TMP environment variables to a C:Temp folder I created so I can clear temporary files with a (shutdown) script. Have you tried clearing/cleaning your ‘temporary files’ folders?)

          Hope this helps…

Cleaning out the Temp files didn’t help. Chrome still crashes several times a day. Yahoo seems to be the most regular offender, but is not the only site that causes a crash. Going back to the same page that was active when Chrome crashed sometimes causes a crash again and sometimes does not. The crash often happens after I have been on the page for a length of time rather than immediately.

I shut down my PC every evening. I just used CCleaner to clear out my temp files. I will see if that helps.

It’s possible that something like ‘bad’ video drivers are behind this, what graphics card or CPU/motherboard chipset do you have?

My PC has an Intel Core i5-4570 processor with built in graphics running on a Gigabyte motherboard. There is no separate graphics card. Is it likely that I need new drivers for the processor?

Have you tried using another browser with these same web sites? What happened with for example with Firefox or MS Internet Explorer?

Unfortunately there is no consistency to what sites crash Chrome. If I go back to the same page that was active when Chrome crashed it sometimes crashes again, but usually it doesn’t. When I get sick of Chrome’s crashed I occasionally switch to Edge and it hasn’t crashed yet.

I’ve seen odd things reported with recent drivers and the Intel Iris Pro, also a few with users of the later HD series graphics. Can you check through Reliability Monitor to see what’s been reported there for anything graphics related and updates for graphics drivers: http://www.howtogeek.com/222730/how-to-find-out-why-your-windows-pc-crashed-or-froze/

    • #1586052

I haven’t used the Reliability Monitor before. There was nothing related to graphics or Chrome. Interestingly and unrelated, it shows multiple instances of Keepass, my password manager, crashing even though it has never had a problem. The Chrome crashes do not happen while using Keepass to enter a password.

No other (driver?) updates listed, or failed updates?

The only other failure in the Reliability Monitor is svchost.exe_stisvc.

      Details might be useful.

That should be the WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) Service, it is related to graphics, possibly a pointer that *something* isn’t right, what 3rd party software related to graphics/display do you have?

How about graphics -related hardware/peripherals, like a pen tablet, scanner, printer – do they all have the latest software/drivers installed and do they all work correctly?

The more detailed your replies, the more likely that someone will pick out something relevant/important.

I do have Greenshot (a screen capture program) installed and it does sit in the system tray. I have the latest version and it has worked perfectly.

I also have a Canon LIDE 110 scanner which I always keep plugged in to a USB port. It does occasionally fail with a connection failure in the midst of scanning. In response to your suggestion I have installed the latest driver from Canon (I did have an older version) and will post later to report if that helps.

    • #1586513

Installing the latest drivers for the Canon scanner did not resolve the problem. I’ll keep looking for an answer, but for now I think I’ve exhausted all my possible solutions.

    • #1586516

IHip, did you uninstall all the Canon Lide 110 material before re-installing?

No. But in the process of installing the new drives it put up a message saying “uninstalling old drivers.”
