Where to find custom app icon packs you can use with iOS 14.3 and iPadOS 14.3 for a price.

With the public release of iOS 14.3 today, Apple has made the experience of using custom home screen icons much better. Now custom icons created through the Shortcuts app launch right into your desired app instead of opening the Shortcuts app first…

Ecosia now a default search engine option on iOS, iPadOS, macOS

Ecosia is a search engine that promotes privacy first and plants trees around the world, and with Mondays updates, it is now available as a default search engine setting on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

Ecosia uses their income from search ads to fund planting trees around the world in harsh environments. The search engine doesn’t track users, encrypts searches, and anonymizes data within a week of it being created.

The ad revenue generated from Apple users alone have planted over seven million trees in 2020, and now you can do more by making it the default search engine. The website shows over 115 million trees have been planted as a result of search revenue so far….

iOS 14.3/iPadOS 14.3 and watchOS 7.3 has caused major battery life issues with all of my devices, even my brand new iPad mini.

HomePod Software 14.3 also had a glitch when installing on one of my HomePod minis.

No battery drain on my iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch.
There are probably some hog apps you are using not compatible with iOS 14.3… although developers had enough test time with dev & beta versions.

You can check battery usage (daily/weekly) by app on your iPhone, iPad.

iOS 14.5 beta 6 released to developers.

      New : battery recalibration tool.

iOS 14.5, coming later this spring, includes an update where the battery health reporting system will recalibrate maximum battery capacity and peak performance capability on iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max to address inaccurate estimates of battery health reporting for some users. Symptoms of this bug include unexpected battery drain behavior or, in a small number of instances, reduced peak performance capability. This inaccurate battery health reporting does not reflect an issue with actual battery health.

PK Cano….I didn’t see the instructions to upgrade on the links you posted, but I did find this on GottaBeMobile and it works.  I was able to update to 3E751 in less than a minute.  You need to have the charging case open.  This isn’t clear in the instructions….

“If you want to proceed with the upgrade process, here’s what you need to do.

            1. Put your AirPods, AirPods 2, or AirPods Pro inside their case.
            2. Make sure the case is connected to a power source. You can use the Lightning to USB cable or you can use wireless charging if you’ve got AirPods Pro and a compatible charger.
            3. Grab your iPhone or iPad and make sure it has an internet connection.
            4. Make sure your AirPods are paired with your iPhone or iPad and then bring the device close to the charging case.

Now you just need to wait a bit. If a new update is available, it should automatically download and install.”

iPhone users reporting ‘SIM Failure’ error after updating to iOS 14.7 beta 2

..Based on a few reports on Twitter and also others shared directly with 9to5Mac, there seems to be a widespread bug in the second beta release of iOS 14.7 that results in a “SIM Failure” message right after installing the update.

In addition to the error message, users are unable to make or receive calls or use cellular data on their iPhone after the update. At least based on the reports we have received, the bug seems to mainly affect iPhone users with eSIM instead of regular SIM.

It’s unknown what is causing the bug, but unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be a workaround for this issue. If you’re running the first beta release of iOS 14.7 on your main iPhone, we recommend that you skip the second beta release until Apple releases another update.

If you have already downloaded iOS 14.7 beta 2 but have not yet installed the update, here’s a walkthrough on how to cancel the update:

        Open the Settings app
        Go to General
        Tap iPhone Storage
Look for iOS 14.7 beta 2 in the list and tap on it
        Choose Delete Update…

      Apple Temporarily

If you’re low on iCloud storage but want to buy a new device and transfer your data, Apple is making the process easier in iOS 15 with a temporary storage boost.

“Now when you buy a new device you can use iCloud Backup to move your data to your new device, even if you’re low on storage. iCloud will grant you as much storage as you need to complete a temporary backup, free of charge, for up to three weeks. This allows you to get all your apps, data, and settings onto your device automatically.”…

List of iOS 15 Features That Won’t be Available on Older iPhones

While the iPhone 8 series and the iPhone X feature a Neural Engine, it’s possibly not powerful enough to run some of the new iOS 15 features. Many of the new iOS 15 features require an A12 Bionic chip or newer to work. …

Despite the iPhone 6s not getting some of the new iOS 15 features, it is undeniably impressive that Apple will be bringing its latest iOS release to an iPhone that it launched over six years ago. iPhone 8 and iPhone X owners might be disappointed though, that their device is also not getting the above iOS 15 features despite packing a noticeably more powerful A-series chip than the iPhone 6s.

Support for NTFS File System on iPadOS

Apple has finally added support for the NTFS file system on iPadOS 15. Up until now, iPad’s Files app could only read external hard drives formatted in exFAT or FAT32, and of course Apple’s own APFS. With the new update, Apple has added the functionality to support the NTFS file system as well.

iOS 15 Live Text – Pull Text from Any Photo

..Live Text feature has been built right into the Photos app, so you can interact with any photo in your library and perform Live Text functions on it. Live Text is also built right into other iOS apps and functions. This includes screenshot, quick look, Safari and the Camera app.

The Camera app integration is really cool, as it allows you to point to any text and quickly copy, translate or look up. You can point your iPhone’s Camera on a sign board, lecture board or a piece of paper with text on it. When iPhone recognizes the text it lets you select, copy and look up that text. Once you have copied the text you can paste it in any app of your choice…

iOS 15 : “Notify When Left Behind”

The feature is called “Notify When Left Behind” and it’s part of the Find My separation alerts that Apple announced during WWDC21. Whenever you leave an AirTag or device behind the Find My app will alert you, hence the name. In our testing it works well, and you can configure a Trust Location like your home or office where the alerts are automatically disabled…

I was waiting for this feature for years. Had this on my Kickstarter Pebble smartwatch.

AirTag : Firmware version 1.0.276 build number 1A287b released.

There is no way to force an AirTag update, because it’s something that’s done over-the-air through a connected iPhone. To make sure the update happens, you can put your AirTag in range of your ‌iPhone‌, but you have to wait for the firmware to roll out to your device.

You can check your current AirTag firmware version through the Find My app.

For those who want to delay the iOS 15 upgrade, you are still fine on iOS 14. Apple says that you will still get “important security updates for a period of time” on iOS 14 (https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT204204).

Apple Releases Urgent iPhone and iPad Updates to Patch New Zero-Day Vulnerability

Apple on Monday released a security update for iOS and iPad to address a critical vulnerability that it says is being exploited in the wild, making it the 17th zero-day flaw the company has addressed in its products since the start of the year.’

The weakness, assigned the identifier CVE-2021-30883, concerns a memory corruption issue in the “IOMobileFrameBuffer” component that could allow an application to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. Crediting an anonymous researcher for reporting the vulnerability, Apple said it’s “aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.”…

Security researcher Saar Amar shared additional details, and a proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit, noting that “this attack surface is highly interesting because it’s accessible from the app sandbox (so it’s great for jailbreaks) and many other processes, making it a good candidate for LPEs exploits in chains.”..

      iPhone Backup After Installing 15.2

This bit of info may be helpful to someone that experiences what I did today.  After updating to iOS 15.2  and then attempting to backup the phone via Finder, I got an error message saying  it could not read the contents of the iPhone and to click on Restore (in the body of the message) to restore back to factory settings.  Who wants to rush into that?   I did a quick Google search and saw where an iPhone restart may resolve the problem.  It did for me.  I think it was somehow related to 15.2 not settling in correctly.

      https://9to5mac.com/2022/01/25/latest-beats-studio-buds-firmware-update-enables-instant-pairing-via-icloud-and-new-volume-controls/

Update 10M359 now shows the battery status of Beats Studio Buds on iOS devices every time the charging case is open and nearby, similar to the experience AirPods users have. A popup provides details of the battery level of the earbuds and the charging case.

Another welcome change is that Beats Studio Buds now support instant pairing via iCloud. Unlike AirPods and other Beats earbuds with Apple’s own chip, Beats Studio Buds had no support for syncing via iCloud, meaning the user had to manually pair them with each new device. Now this has finally been fixed with the latest firmware update.

Apple has also enabled new physical controls using the “b” button on the earbuds. Users can now enable an option to change the volume level of the Beats Studio Buds just by pressing their side buttons. The company says that this feature works with iOS, macOS, and even Android devices…

Apple Watch firmware can now be restored from an iPhone running iOS 15.4

Apple Watch doesn’t have any data ports accessible to users, which means that only Apple is able to repair your watch if there’s a firmware failure. Luckily, iOS 15.4 and watchOS 8.5 introduce a new tool to let users wirelessly restore the Apple Watch firmware using their iPhone.

Shortly after releasing iOS 15.4 and watchOS 8.5 to the public on Monday, Apple updated its support article with information on what users need to do if the Apple Watch stops working…

“Your Apple Watch might show an animation asking you to bring it close to an iPhone if your watch experiences a problem that requires it to be updated or restored. You might also see a red exclamation point on your watch. If your Apple Watch with watchOS 8.5 or later displays an animation showing a watch and iPhone being brought close together, follow these steps.”….

I updated my First Gen iPhone SE (and the wife’s SE) and all was well with one exception. The Apple Weather app location feature ceased to work.

I traveled and it shifted to the new location, but would never shift back. All searches for locations brought up nothing. A reboot did nothing, and an uninstall of the app and reinstall did nothing. We deleted it as it is not often used, and is far inferior to the Accuweather app, especially the paid version of the Accuweather app.

Recent reviews of the Apple weather app have been pretty negative.

First time ever in 5+ years of use that these phones have had any issues with a base installed app (or any feature). And just as we were going to get new iPhones this week, a standard size and a mini.

Alex, I tried to use iTunes (because I like its ability to backup first to my Win 10) to do update but after downloading and extracting I got error 4000. Tried again and same result. So went to WIFI and everything worked fine.

I had used iTunes for the previous update several months ago and that worked fine.

Also when I use WIFI for the update does it do a backup first and what is that backed up to as I am not signed in?

Thanks for you keeping everyone so well informed on these updates!!!!!!

Also when I use WIFI for the update does it do a backup first and what is that backed up to as I am not signed in?

No, it does not. You should backup manually before installing new iOS. Either on the device or using iTunes. I create 2 backups: 1 on PC and 1 to iCloud.

I update using my iPhone and iPad and Watch and not iTunes (currently iOS/iPadOS 15.5 and watchOS 8.6)

Alex, if you plan on updating to 1OS 16 after a reasonable wait period, say to a 16.01 or 16.1, don’t you think these fixes in 15.7 are also in 16?  So, is updating to 15.7 really necessary at this time?

Apple releases iOS 16.0.2 to fix iPhone 14 Pro camera shake bug, copy and paste permission, more..

Apple on Thursday released iOS 16.0.2 for all iPhone users. The update comes with important bug fixes, not only for iPhone 14 owners, but also other models as well. For instance, today’s update fixes an issue that could cause the iPhone 14 Pro’s camera to shake unexpectedly in some apps, while also resolving the persistent copy and paste prompt across the system.

As noted by iPhone 14 Pro users, some third-party apps like Snapchat and TikTok caused the camera to shake and vibrate. Although the official reasons remain unclear, the bug was probably affecting the optical stabilization of the camera lenses.

Another bug that had been annoying iOS 16 users was related to the new copy and paste permission, which asks users whether they want to allow or deny an app to have access to the system clipboard. However, this prompt was constantly appearing to users, even after they had allowed a specific app to access the clipboard…

In Apple’s definition, a product is considered vintage when it was stopped being distributed for sale more than 5 years and less than 7 years ago.

Where are we discussing when it is safe to update older phones (iPhone 11) to IOS 16.1.1? I know not recommended by many sites before today asthe upgrade can create issues. What is current thinking?

    • #2500035
    • #2500042

Thanks. To be more exact, not only safe to install, but safe to update from 15.7.1? I could easily understand no issue from a previous 16.x, but want to be sure that a full IOS update version is solid before I risk as no longer any going back.

    • #2500211

Many of the sites that watch IOS releases still recommend NOT updating 15.7 to 16.1 as there are a few issues reported enough to make that painful. I think I’ll wait for at least 16.2

    • #2500307

Twpo of the sites I saw. There are more but no time to find the links.

No worries. I’ll do it next update. I find IOPS updates worth waiting a nbit for.

      • #2500418

First disregard anything Forbes about Apple.

There are always users that have problems with new OS updates on Apple, Microsoft, Linux…
You never know what else they are running on their devices that may cause these “bugs”.

iOS 16.1.1 is safe to install and has security fixes and bug fixes that are more important that any update scare.

Like with any OS update on any device make an iPhone backup to iCloud and local PC.

        • #2500460

Difference isa, you cannot revert on this update (or most IOS updates) if you have issues. Demands an extra dose of caution. Win 10, Macrium Reflect. But not IOS.

    • #2500526

you cannot revert on this update (or most IOS updates) if you have issues.

Yes you can as long as Apple still signs the previous iOS version.

    • #2500549

      Bingo. Which they are not.

      iOS 16.1 is still signed.

Last month you could still downgrade iOS 16.x to iOS 15.7.1 but you lost that opportunity waiting for nothing with the update to 16.x while Apple stopped signing iOS 15.7.1

You can still download older versions of iOS/iPadOS here : https://www.idownloadblog.com/download/

    • #2500551

And I am on 15.7. If 16.1.1 does not work well for me why would 16.1? Its into the deep end of the pool or wade aftwer 16.2, perhaps.

    • #2500552

into the deep end of the pool or wade aftwer 16.2

Why do you think that 16.2 will be different ?

      * I am running 16.2, (currently beta 3) for weeks now with 0 bugs.
But I never had bugs with any iOS version since iPhone 3/iPad Mini 1.

      * look at my edited previous response.

    • #2500561

More time to work through bugs that came with 16.

That’s interesting on older versions. WIll have to look at that.

And I think you have to agree, we all use our iPhones differently. I have 144 apps, a lot of choices in settings and I could be unstable where you might have never been with your updates. Its an incredible permutuation of uses and apps. I just try to be cautious, especially when the version I am coming from is not longer signed. If a backup restored the OS as well, would be a non-issue for me.

Microsoft Authenticator watchOS app to be discontinued in January

      …Apple Watch support

Q: Is Apple Watch supported for Authenticator on iOS?

A: In the upcoming Authenticator release in January 2023 for iOS, there will be no companion app for watchOS due to it being incompatible with Authenticator security features. This means you won’t be able to install or use Authenticator on Apple Watch. We therefore recommend that you delete Authenticator from your Apple Watch. This change only impacts Apple Watch, so you will still be able to use Authenticator on your other devices…

I have an iPad Air 5 (2022) as well. It is offering both 15.7.2 and 16.1.2. Is the only difference between the two that 16 has the new features, but 15 does not? And that there is no difference in the security updates between 15.7.2 and 16.1.1??

After seeing that Susan had noted iOS 16.4 and OS 13.3 as “Install” on the Patch list due to Security updates, I installed both this morning.  No issues so far.  On 13.3, I did notice that Automatic Updates had apparently been toggled ON by the update.  There’s a mention of it in the startup screens after the install completes. I would never have done that on my own and turned it OFF.  iPhone 13 and iMac 2019.

I did notice that Automatic Updates had apparently been toggled ON by the update.

The same thing happened to me with iPadOS 16.4, but it did not happen with iPadOS 15.7.4.

iPadOS 15.7.4 also does not offer the “Security Responses and System Files” option that iPadOS 16.4 does.

        • #2547769
    • #2547075

On my new iPad Air 5 (2022), I had had automatic updates turned OFF, but I turned it ON to get 16.4 After the update, it started up with automatic updates ON, but a dialog box told me about that change. and so I turned back OFF after the update.

There is another option — “Security Responses and System Files”, which is turned ON. That option is offered, no matter whether you have automatic updates ON or OFF. I had not noticed this option in previous 16.x updates, so I don’t know whether it is new? or had been there earlier? And if it had been there before, whether it was ON? or OFF?

My older iPad Air 2 doesn’t even have this option. I am still on 15.7.3 and I want to wait a while before I update that one to 15.7.4. So, I can’t use the older un-updated iPad as a guide for the newer updated one.

I want automatic updates to be OFF, but I am not sure about this “Security Responses and System Files” option on the newer iPad. What is the recommendation for this button?

This update is available through iTunes and Software Update on your
iOS device, and will not appear in your computer’s Software Update
application, or in the Apple Downloads site. Make sure you have an
Internet connection and have installed the latest version of iTunes
from https://www.apple.com/itunes/ iTunes and Software Update on the
device will automatically check Apple’s update server on its weekly
schedule. When an update is detected, it is downloaded and the option
to be installed is presented to the user when the iOS device is
docked. We recommend applying the update immediately if possible.
Selecting Don’t Install will present the option the next time you
connect your iOS device. The automatic update process may take up to
a week depending on the day that iTunes or the device checks for
updates. You may manually obtain the update via the Check for Updates
button within iTunes, or the Software Update on your device. To
check that the iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad has been updated: *
Navigate to Settings * Select General * Select About. The version
after applying this update will be “iOS 15.7.5 and iPadOS 15.7.5”.

On my Ipad 5th Gen, I have a message in Settings>General>Software Update> that iPadOS Security Response 16.4.1 (a) has downloaded. I pressed the “Install Now”, entered my passcode, and a box says “verifying response”. But after that, it says there is no internet connection. But, there IS. I know there is because I can do searches on Safari, send iMessages, etc.

I tried it three times and still got the “no internet connection” message. I restarted. No dice. I did a forced restart. No dice. .. Still no internet connection. I did the restart, then forced restart three times. Still no internet connection, although all indications otherwise is that there IS an internet connection.

Then I just closed the cover and gave up.

I understand the Apple has been beta testing the “Rapid Security Response” update mechanism for some time now and that 16.4.1 (a) is the first-ever public release. There must be some bugs in the mechanism still.

update at 4:01 PM EST here (time stamp on original note is CST):
The iPad has just updated and has sent a message to the Notification Center to that effect. Apple must be really busy with the update. But the problem was NOT at my end; I DID have internet connection, I swear. I think the problem was at Apple’s end with a busy server. The message should have been “busy … try again later”

        • #2555798

Did you check your connection (WiFi/cellular) settings on the first page of the Settings App to be sure you are still connected?

          • #2555807

Yes, at Settings, the 2nd on the list (after Airplane Mode, which OFF) is Wi-Fi. It has the right internet access identifier from my provider in the field. As I said, all other internet-connected features are working: email, safari, iMessage, FaceTime, sign-in to my Yahoo calendar, AppStore, etc are working.

        • #2555816

WCHS….I agree that all the issues regarding Rapid Security Responses may not be completely ironed out.  Both my iMac and iPhone are set to auto install these updates, but I was notified by an alert in my Mac’s settings that 13.1.1(a) was available…it had not auto installed. My iPhone did not auto install 16.4.1(a) and there was no alert, but it was in General>Software Update. I manually downloaded and installed both.  I’m assuming these are rolled out over time and not all at once worldwide.  Does anyone know what the timing is for these auto updates?

      iOS 16.5.1 released

Alex, today I installed the 16.5.1 and now my iPhone SE 5g won’t send text messages. I tried a reset network. No effect. I tried using iTunes restore but it won’t let me restore unless I turn off iCloud Find My phone and that gets an error connecting Apple. (Note I did not do a backup to iCloud but to iTunes on my PC.

Also I can send a text from 16.5 phone to 16.5.1 with no problems.

But 16.5.1 phone fails to send to 16.5.

My other iPhone 16.5 works fine.

Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks.

The researchers said the vulnerability was used as part of an exploit chain designed to deliver NSO Group’s malware, known as Pegasus.

      beta 1 released to devs.

visionOS beta 7 released to devs

17.3 comes with new feature : Stolen Device Protection

..Testing is now available for Stolen Device Protection. This new feature adds an additional layer of security in the unlikely case that someone has stolen your phone and also obtained your passcode.

Accessing your saved passwords requires Face ID to be sure it’s you.

Changing sensitive settings like your Apple ID password is protected by a security delay

No delay is required when iPhone is at familiar locations such as home and work..

For example, with the feature turned on, actions like using passwords or passkeys, applying for an Apple Card, turning off Lost Mode, erasing an iPhone, and using payment methods saved with iPhone will require biometric authentication – no passcode fallback when away from familiar locations.

But for even more sensitive actions like changing your Apple ID password, updating Apple ID security settings, changing passcode or Touch/Face ID settings, and turning off Find My or Stolen Device protection, the one hour security delay will come into play away from familiar locations. That means a second biometric authentication will be required after that delay…

Anyone else seeing iOS 17 ignoring the software updates/automatic off settings?

I have a couple of friends who rely on hotspots for internet access so I have automatic updates turned off (all options – iOS Updates/Security Responses/Auto Download iOS updates are off).

Over the last month or two they are pestered with the Update Now/Tonight screen within hours of the update being released.  Just happened with both phones already at iOS 17.4 when 17.4.1 came out.

Happened with iPadOS (17.4.1) for my IPad Air 5, and I have automatic updates off, too. It happens this way all the time.

I get a red badge on the ‘Settings’ icon on my Home screen. No download, no install … instead, on my Software Update’ screen, there is a blue bar to tap, if I want to ‘Update Now’ or blue font ‘for ‘Update Tonight’, if I want to do that.

Otherwise, the notification just sits there on the ‘Software Update’ screen and the red badge remains on the ‘Settings’ icon on the Home screen — this since ‘automatic updates’ is ‘OFF’.

I have to tap to make the update happen.

That’s not what’s happening with my friends.  Within hours of release and no interaction with the settings/software updates page, it acts like you’ve already asked it to install.  The update now/tonight prompt comes up on top of whatever you are doing.

I’m familiar with the red badge coming up on the Settings app and that’s normal even with automatic updates off.

@Alex5723, if iOS 17.6 comes out before 18, why install it if 18 is only days away?  It will have all the 17.6 updates…right? Same for OS 14.6 vs Sequoia?  Just wait for Sequoia?

iOS 18 is 2 months away. iOS 18 may have some of iOS 17 updates as it is very different in many functions from UI to AI.

If you are running 17.x it is advised to install the latest security and bug fixes.

allow me to include a link …

and maybe at the top of the newer thread there needs to be a link to the older posts?
