Nir Sofer of NirSoft has, and continues to develop, an excellent selection of free utilities…

Read the section on “false positives”.

Like AskWoody, NirSoft is a one-person operation, so if you like and use Nir’s tools, a small donation would be appreciated.

Awesome indeed especially the ‘USBView’ where you can uninstall old usb devices no longer used.
Then you can manually remove them via regedit HKLM/System/Mounted devices.

I think those devices can be made visible and removed by creating the system environment variable DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES set to 1 and selecting Show hidden devices in Device Manager GUI.
        This works in Windows 7 /2008 R2.
In later versions the environment variable does not need to be created.
        https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/315539/device-manager-does-not-display-devices-that-are-not-connected

Note: The Microsoft article shows how to create the environment variable per user from a command-line. In most cases it is preferable to create that variable per-system in the System applet.

The tools released by NirSoft are at the same level of exceptional quality with the tools released in the past by Sysinternals.
Nirsoft is the real thing 🙂

I’ve never understood why ‘Process Explorer’ wasn’t baked into Windows’ admin tools.

    • #92242

I’ve used Nir’s tools for over ten years. What I like most about them is his emphasis on function. Maybe not the best looking GUI, but his tools work like I expect them to. Basic GUI, small footprint, big on getting the job done. When I need a screwdriver, I’m not looking for something designed by Tiffany’s, I want a basic piece of quality steel (preferably with a handle attached) capable of removing and inserting screws.

Nir Sofer is a mystery to me. First of all, this guy has been pumping out free technical software since the beginnings of time, and seems to be highly considered. How does he make a living ?

Second, his programs, although (allegedly) offering capabilities most others don’t, always seem to stay deliberately on the geeky side of things, being just enough user-hostile that the great unwashed masses will be discouraged to use them.

Number three, his website is fully consistent with his programs’ non-existent look-and-feel, and has probably been designed at a time the Internet did not exist, yet.

Number four, his software is not high DPI-aware, meaning you (OK, me) have the choice between an exceedingly small, unreadable interface, and a normally-sized, blurry interface. … Then again, he probably still uses an MD-DOS interface on his Windows 10 PC all day long, with green characters on a black background.

I;ve been using NirSoft software for about a century. The guy’s very good, and I’ve never heard of his software having any problems.

As for how he makes any money off it – I dunno. You might also ask how I make any money off AskWoody. 🙂

However, you do have a point. I’ve never given a blanket recommendation for NirSoft products because I just don’t know the company, don’t know Nir Sofer. I’ve been hesitant in the past to recommend software where I can’t, personally, vouch for the vendor. It took me a long time to get to know Josh Mayfield and feel comfortable recommending GWX Control Panel.

Every indication I have is that Nir is a reputable fellow, and his tools garner high praise.

      @ Clairvaux

For the record, your post was Edited by one of the MPVs because it was considered *inappropriate*–something about *War Crimes* and the *World Court*. (Probably a feeble attempt at *humor*, but … not so much!)

this guy has been pumping out free technical software since the beginnings of time, and seems to be highly considered. How does he make a living ?

I have considered them quite handy for years now! I have his networking inspection software (wired and wireless) loaded up on my laptop, so when I go to a friend’s house who’s having networking problems–I can trouble shoot the problem quickly

his website is fully consistent with his programs’ non-existent look-and-feel, and has probably been designed at a time the Internet did not exist, yet

Trust me, I am unable to program a website to look anything but terrible–I will never be able to master that skill, and not everyone does have that skill set–does it really matter?

Anyway, these types of *character attacks* that don’t offer any meaningful contribution is bordering on violating the Lounge’s rules on *civility*–be careful out there ….. or your Reply(s) might suffer the consequences!

      [ Edited by Woody … Let’s keep this civil, please …. ]

It’s not hard to imagine someone intelligent enough to write such software might be employed full-time to write software for any number of engineering companies. There are a lot of people in the world behind the scenes who make things work.

Also, freely sharing knowledge pays back in intangible ways.

My favorites are Wireless Network Watcher, RunAsDate-x64, and especially WirelessKeyView-x32 and 64. A caution on the last one, some AV programs will try to delete it. If you use it on a new machine, make sure your AV is set to quarantine only and not delete. That will allow you to create an exception for it. It used to pop up as a HackTool.
