I have set Chrome as my default web browser in Windows 10 Home > Settings > Apps > Default apps.

If I click a link in an email in Outlook it opens in Chrome. However, today I received an email from Capital One Shopping and the link in the body of the email did not work so I clicked on “If there are problems with how this message is displayed, click here to view it in a web browser” and the web page opened in Internet Explorer.</p>
I did a web search for this but all the results said to use the Default apps setting in Windows. As I have said above, I already have Chrome set as the default web browser there so apparently the “If there are problems with how this message is displayed, click here to view it in a web browser” link uses a different setting because it is opening in Internet Explorer instead of Chrome.

I hope someone can help me fix this.

    Thanks,
    Don

There is unfortunately no good answer to this, although it’s been asked here a few times:

Outlook 365 email view in browser opens IE11

Outlook 2016 & Default Web Browser

Outlook needs a program to open its .mht file.

That usually now means only IE11 or Word.

Microsoft should have fixed it (e.g. Edge).

Does it help to assing desired browser to .mht file extension? From control panel?
I know that some things (like search results from Start Menu) are hard coded to open in EDGE, but this issue sounds like it could be overwritten by the setting I mentioned above.

Unfortunately, IE11 is the only browser which can open an .mht file.

My Windows offers me other options. Maybe its worth trying.

It was possible years ago to use Chrome (with a flag) or Firefox (with an extension), but not now. Word works OK though.

Sadly my Windows 10 Home only offers IE and “Look for app in Windows Store”.

The only way to open .mht files is to ‘save as’ the email as HTML file under the drop down menu (I saved mine in the desktop and voila, opened it with Firefox with no trouble). Then open it with your current browser. I know it’s a hustle but it works.

But is it possible to save an email as HTML from Outlook?

        I don’t think so.

        • #2426114

It certainly is in Outlook 365.

Open the email, select file then ‘save as’ and change the type to HTML.

Yes, thanks. You’re right, of course.

I had apparently chosen only to test with plain text emails (like forum notifications) for which Outlook does not provide the HTML option for Save As type.

But for all emails which you might want to open in a browser (i.e with graphics), then Outlook provides the save as HTML option.

Sorry, but I have forgotten to check on this post. I can’t remember if I tried the suggested link but it appears the issue is resolved at this point.

I’ve been plagued with this problem as well, but just today while researching whether there were solutions remembered I added a free extension for personal use to my Chrome browser available from the Chrome Web Store called “IE Tab“.  I find it works easily and wonderfully for outlook email conversion.  I had originally downloaded it a long time ago, and used it on whole web sites that were written in mhtl when I didn’t want to use Internet Explorer anymore as my default browser.   I see it asks for a subscription and payment for some features now, but I’m not using those – so read the prospectus and reviews first.

I’m running Outlook 2019.  When I open emails that only give me the “If there are problems,… view in browser” option then I first choose to do that and let Chrome show me the temporary raw text file it generates.  Next, I click the IE Tab icon in the upper right hand corner of the Chrome browser, and IE Tab opens an addition tab in Chrome and renders the temporary text file as if Internet Explorer would have!  Boom!  You can keep your favorite Chrome based browser as your favorite, and still see links intended for Internet Explorer.
