I agree. I installed it the day it came out. It seems rock solid. Very responsive and i have not had any problems what so ever.

I used the upgrade assistant and a couple of days later used the Fresh Start option to do a clean installation.

@Susan Remember your worry about the 32GB space needed for 1903 ? That 32GB are only required for new installs by OEM or clean install by users.
There are no restrictions for current users who upgrade Windows 10 to 1903.

Can you post pics of the new Update Screens?

What Susan is describing in her article for Win 1903 Pro doesn’t sound any different from what we have in 1809/1803 now.

In 1803 I can already delay Quality Updates and delay Feature Updates up to 365 days – so what’s different?

I thought I read the big deal (aside from Win Home being able to set delays) was that there was to be 2 separate Update sections:

One section the famous “Download and install” that would notify, but not download a Feature update until you clicked on the link?

The other section for Quality updates that would allow install delays up to 35 days and allow the “Check for Updates” Button to be used to check on updates only without fear of triggering a Feature update.

So what do you folks have?

The screenshots I posted two months ago are still valid.

What we’re still missing is concrete experience. That’ll have to wait until a lot of people have bumped it a whole lot of times.

Why does the screen in your reference predominately show the Feature Update and Download and install link, while the attachement from Barry above predominately shows the Check for Updates button?

If you have one do you not get the other?
Under what circumstances to you get one or the other?

I thought you got both.

Windows 10 administrators can run a manual check for updates in the following way:
1.Use the keyboard shortcut Windows-I to open the Settings application.
2.Go to Update & Security.
3.Click on the “check for updates” button.

Windows Update should return the new feature update provided that no upgrade blockers were discovered during the check.

The update should be displayed underneath the update check button. Microsoft changed the handling of feature updates recently by separating them from regular cumulative updates that it releases for Windows 10.

Is this saying that after updating 1803/1809 to the new update method (also used by 1903), that you can then click on the “Check for Updates” button and the Windows Update screen will then display the new “Feature Update to Windows 10, Version 1903” and the “Download and install now” link instead of the old way of downloading and forcing you to install 1903? That then would seem to free up the “Check for Updates” button to use at will and would only bring down cumulative updates.

But if the above is correct, where does the Windows Update screen that is posted above by Barry #1794467 come from?

I understand when/where we will get the update, what is confusing is exactly what the Windows Update screen image will change to and the difference in the 2 screen images presented in my post.

The image from ghacks and Woody’s reference show the new separate Feature Update screen while the image from Barry shows a new Check for Updates screen.

Specifically,

How and When will we see each of these 2 screen images?

The only concern I have about the Sandbox is the same concern I have about running Linux Live – when you exit, everything you did disappears. From the picture that you put in your article, it appears that Edge will be the browser in the sandbox. If I don’t want to use Edge, I’ll need to install another browser every time I open a new sandbox. Likely there will be other software I’ll need to install each time I open a new sandbox. It would be really nice if you could install your preferred software in a sandbox template, and then it would all be there for you whenever you open a new sandbox.

I agree. While I’m not ready to start a big push I’ve already determined this will be the next standard for our organization and we will be slowly moving to that version within the next few months.

On my home laptop Windows Update is working as it should. It showed no updates available but when I checked for updates it showed the most recent updates available and then asked me again if I wanted to install them. This is the Pro version so I can’t say if is the way it works with home edition. But no more surprise updates.

Let me make sure I understand you.

You’re running Win10 1809 (1803?) Pro.

You click “Check for updates”

Windows Update comes back with a “Download and install now” link.

You click on that link, and Win10 1903 gets installed.

Correct? That’s how it’s supposed to work – if your machine passes muster.

My home laptop is still an old Alienware R17. It was running 1809 pro and I used the media creation tool last week to upgrade to 1903. So I did not follow the procedure recommended for people here where I should wait for windows update to tell me it is ready.

The changes I noted with Windows update would be with 1903.

Just got offered 1903 with the new Download and Install invite in Windows Update.

This was a Dell Latitude 5590 running Pro 1809 (17763.529).  Went ahead with the update and it is now on 1903 (18362.145).  Update went without a hitch and seems OK as we speak!

I don’t yet have Windows 10, and don’t really have any great ambition to have it – not least because of a concern highlighted by the present version. If it does introduce nice new features, and it turns out to work really well for many users, isn’t there an inherent problem in the fact that in six months time there will be another complete version with some other new features that may or may not work as well? At least with the previous Windows operating systems you knew from Day One pretty much what you were getting.

That wouldn’t be so bad if you could end up with a version of Windows 10 that was optimal for your needs, and then be able to stick with it – but all you can do with Windows 10 is postpone the inevitable “upgrade” from your optimal version, you can’t stick with it indefinitely. It’s not that far removed from the forced upgrades to Windows 7 except that it now happens every six months.

Moreover, arguably the more important of the “nice new features” now beginning to be presented in Windows 10 were actually present in previous Windows operating systems from the start! How can we possibly be excited over the fact that Windows 10 users are finally going to be able to defer updates for a bit longer than previously? Where’s the option to say “No thanks”?

In my view Microsoft still have a long way to go to make Windows 10 the ultimate operating system they clearly intended it to be. When that point finally arrives, hopefully someone in the company will ask “Why did it take us so long?”.

In theory, you should be able to continue using 1903 until 18 months after it’s been declared “Ready for business.” At least, that’s my understanding – and the definitions have changed so much it’s hard to keep track.

Unfortunately, Microsoft has also said that it’ll start force-updating older versions of Win10 whenever they darn well feel like it – thus last month’s warning that 1803 will be forced to 1903 this month. Remains to be seen how that will work.

“Ready for business” will have no effect on the end of service for 1903. The 18 months already started on 2019-05-21 regardless of edition or settings and will end on 2020-12-08, as shown by the top table row at aka.ms/w10info, which as noted above the table will not have any further 1903 rows added. (But then “Ready for business” has never affected the end of service date 18 months after initial release for any previous version of Windows 10 either.)

Thanks for the optimistic reviews of 1903. I have a quick question – will Win 10 laptops start shipping with 1903 already installed? I have been holding off getting a new laptop – really am not thrilled to be considering Win 10, but for a variety of reasons, it seems like at least one of my computers will need to have it. Since this update sounds like it is pretty stable, and has some good features – will it be available to order on a new computer any time soon?

If not – then I guess buying one and doing the upgrade to 1903 will be my next choice. If that is the case – can I upgrade to 1903 no matter which version comes on the new laptop directly, or does it need to get each in order till I reach 1903?

Thanks for the review and input. And BTW – I do also have a laptop running Linux Mint – full install from a USB – so that will probably be my day to day computer. I like it a lot, but not everything I have will run on it, unfortunately.

You can upgrade directly to v1903 from whatever version the laptop comes with. No need to go version by version. Be sure you get Pro!!!!

There is better control offered by Pro.
If you Pause, at the end of the pause period you get whatever is there, like it or not. You don’t have to take that in Pro. You can also Group Policy for other controls that you don’t have in Home.

We’ve put 1903 on several test machines, testing for performance and compatibility with AutoDesk and Bluebeam products.

So far our test rollout has gone far more smoothly than previous feature releases.  So much so I am considering accelerating a small live test group this coming week. Note these are all upgrade scenarios, not been doing clean installs.

The only hiccup is a known bug, waiting to have that rolled into the download (card reading presence blocks update.)

Thinking once that’s available – full ahead on impulse drives! (to the test group)

Glad i amuse you. I use Home and i am not German so the sandbox issue dose not affect me. if you would bother to download the latest cumulative update most of the problems have been solved.

Guess i need to look up where you write your articles so i can get a good laugh myself.

The card bug was fixed in one of the Preview non-Security CUs, but won’t be fixed until the June Patch Tuesday Security CU for general consumers.

This is not good for those who have only 32GB of storage. They need the extra storage provided by the SD/USB card in order to be able to do updates.

A problem with new purchases is it will depend upon how long a dealer has a machine on the shelf.  Many/most will not expend the labor cost to Upgrade to the latest Version until asked for the customer and maybe at additional cost.  I Upgraded a month-old Lenovo Desktop last week that had Version 1703 installed.

As for problems, apparently none of my machines are the same as those folks are having troubles with [no 2 are exactly alike], I am not except for a few third-party programs that are not completely up-to-snuff.  And since all my computers are more than 2 years old am wondering if the “latest and greatest” may be involved in the problems.

I also run 3 Linux Mint 19.1 computers, a Desktop, a Notebook and a Dell Inspiron 11 3000 2-in-1 that will not work with Win10 Version 1903 but is great with Linux.  The 32GB SSD in the Dell needs additional storage and the Upgrade fails when seeing anything else plugged in, SDHC card, MicroSDXC card or any USB drive.

Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?"

Well 1903 isn’t too bad generally feels snappier no really big Howlers to report here per se couple of the usual ongoing gripes which, sadly, M$ seems to have missed an opportunity to address mainly for the Win10 Home x64 (Winver 18362.145) crowd.
Stuck Home into a VHDX using dism /apply enabled the usual services, services.msc to connect to the network round here, still the same deal erratic display of Network Computers on all machines, necessitating either using Network reset in settings, at 5 mins of your life you’ll never see again, good for one reboot. Or using the netcfg -d CMD, same single reboot validity.
The Oldie but a Goody re-enable SMB1.0/CIFS does the trick alas, yeah I know it goes against the grain and the wise guidance in here. Simple fix as this was on a VHD on a Pro Machine, was to enter the upgrade Key to Pro (generic) then use both Wizards in Control Panel->System Security->System->System Properties->Advanced->Computer Name (Tab)->Change Computer ID + Change Computer Network or Domains Buttons. Never a problem since, cold consolation for the Home User struggling with Life after Home Groups with a Home Network alas.
UWP Apps/Tiles Mail and Money etc all the usual rules apply disable automatic updating or install with network off and disable before connecting after setup. Seems to me Money and Mail have had a bad batch of updates out of the store for at least the last month so (strangely not affecting 1803, only 1903+1809) use WSRESET and/or un/reinstall sparingly.
Apart from that no real problems, didn’t get a chance to test the update deferral settings yet in either Home or Pro as its early days so taking Patches as they come and no problems yet, using WUMGR to hide Silverlight and any other Howlers. Also Checking if the GPOL Policy for Notify before install actually works (seems it does)
That’s about it really just the usual gripes that have been there since 1709 for Home users, sort of makes you wonder if Home Networking reliability is nothing more than a ploy to get you to upgrade to Pro, but that’s for the Conspiracy Theorists to debate.

You can settle with a Windows 10 that is optimal for your need and never update that version using one of the ‘block-windows 10-updates’ apps which will block any updates including Microsoft’s forced updates for as long as you wish, and are similar to the ‘no thanks’ in Windows 7.

I have installed ‘GWX Control Panel’ on my brother’s Windows 7 as I want him to get Windows 7 security updates, like the latest BlueKeep patch but block Windows 10 upgrade.

Interesting that you use the phrase “settle on” when that has not been Microsoft’s plan for Windows 10. By the time 1903 is stable, Pro and Home will have 1 year left, not much time to settle. Even more interesting, Microsoft’s Lifecycle page currently shows the same date for Ent/Edu. Hope for change?

Don’t think “settle on” will work when Win10 is touted as WaaS, Windows as a Service, that will be constantly having changes.  It’s much the same as SaaS, Software as a Service, where publishers are moving to subscription-based sales.  My “settle on” is Linux Mint 19, supported for another 3 to 4 years and I don’t get fed updates, do them as I wish.

Well, unless they’d happen to have offline installer packages to whatever version they’re going to.

I make a point to regularly download cumulatives, SSUs and fresh ISOs of those versions I can get, for local archiving… so I am quite able to offline update an older version of Windows 10 to, say, 1803, with those.

At this point Microsoft doesn’t patch XP and 7 too (except for very special security bugs), yet there are +500 Million XP and 7 users.

On a new SSD/HDD combo my 1903 Home Upgrade took about an hour with All Security Apps DIS-abled. I got stuck on 91% Install with 1809 and THAT was MY remedy then.

Fast Startup was STILL Disabled but I Disabled Prefetch, SysMain, and Search Indexing that were OFF on 1809. The Startup layout looks the same – Not cluttered with New Apps I read of prior.  1903.18362.145 .

Returned to computer and found more Updates – Didn’t note KB #s but when I clk Uninstall I can see the Old Update History Format which shows for today 6/7/19: Kb4497932 Adobe Flash; 4495620 Net Frmwk 4.72 for me; 4497935 My 1903 Build; 4498523 Saw a Language Pk Fix which should fix gborn’s issue.

So long you do not run 1903 in a Hyper-V VM in enhanced session mode, you’re lucky. Resizing the window or switching between normal/full-screen mode sucks all memory over time. Of course, Microsoft is not aware of any such issues.
