I think Susan’s referring to a different printer bug.

We already have around 70 windows 10 systems that have installed this update. I decided to put that update back to “Not Approved” just in case. Apparently other printer makes are affected too, not just Ricoh. I really don’t want to say this but I haven’t had any calls…..yet on this. Knock Wood. Now that I’ve said that the phones will start ringing.

UPDATE: Microsoft has (apparently) acknowledged the bug:

Print spooler might error or close unexpectedly when attempting to print

After installing KB4557957, certain printers may be unable to print. Print spooler may error or close unexpectedly when attempting to print and no output will come from affected printer. You might also encounter issues with the apps you are attempting to print from. You might receive an error from the app or the app may close unexpectedly. Note This issue might also affect software-based printers, for example printing to PDF.
They don’t say anything about PCL 5 and 6, though.

Definitely have had printer issues for awhile now but lately I can’t even get the driver to install. How interesting that I can use my printer perfectly with Mac OS Catalina and Ubuntu Linux 20.04 which by the way installs the printer without any manual setup. Why is it Windows the most popular OS in the world can’t install a printer anymore???

Note that these are two very different bugs, both triggered by the June Cumulative Updates.

When I checked Susan’s link I got the impression it was an issue with the new spooler driver that was installed with the update. The only thing that I can think of that may explain why I haven’t seen this is because all of our printers are setup in AD. Print jobs are created by printer ques in AD.

Hi there, I am not sure if the problem is entirely related to network and PCL5 printers.

I read and personally expierenced a mix of issues:

Printers attached via USB (not the one found confirmed by MSFT)
      Affected OS:
      Windows 10 Pro 2004

      Affected Printer:
      Brother DCP-195C

      Problem description:
did refuse to print. No error to the user, queue looks normal.

      What did not help:

      • Power on the printer and restart the PC
      • Reconnect USB
      • restarting the PC with printer being connected via USB online (not sleep)
      • Uninstall printer from settings, reconnect / reinstall

      What did help:

      • uninstall the latest CU via Windows Recovery Menu (1903 or later) or via Settings

      Printer attached via USB
      https://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-10-printer-problems-this-bug-makes-usb-printer-ports-vanish-says-microsoft/
      or https://www.computerworld.com/article/3562420/june-cumulative-updates-cause-multiple-problems-with-network-printers.html

      haven’t expierenced that (yet).

      Network printers via WSD
      Affected OS:
      Insider Fast 19645

      Affected Printer:
      OfficeJet Pro 8610

      Problem description:
did refuse to print. Queue says “Attention”. Never seen this before.

      What did not help:
      Powercycling the printer

      What did help:
deleting the printer in Settings and rediscover / install via Settings

alQamar mentioned something that has been a thorn in my side for a long time. WSD printer drivers. I would say 90% of our network print problems wind up being from a pc using a WSD printer driver. Windows 10 has a nasty habit of installing WSD printer drivers even when I setup a printer manually using the IP address of the printer. As a matter of fact last week I setup a network printer on a pc using the IP address and when I double checked the port settings it was installed with a WSD driver. I was logged into the pc as a domain admin and the computer would not let me change the port settings. It was locked down on WSD. I didn’t have time to reboot or wrestle with it so I moved on knowing we may get a call later on a printer issue.

Your post says PCL 6 Type 3 while Woody’s post in CW says PCL 6 Type 2. Is it one of or both of them?

    • #2272711

Final update – today we were up to around 150 Windows 10 systems that received the update. This morning I received 2 reports of print issues. The first was a Ricoh C3505 MPF. The second one was a Dell 2360dn printer.

I made the mistake of playing around with the print driver on the first pc and created a mess. The second pc I uninstalled the June update for windows 10 and the problem was fixed immediately.

Despite having 150 pc’s not reporting the issue I immediately approved KB4560960 for REMOVAL and we will be uninstalling this update.

FYI – this marks the second month our organization has not approved the monthly 1909 and 1903 update. Our windows 10 systems are still on the April update.

Is this issue affecting PCL6 type 2 or type 3? This post says type 3, but Woody’s Computerworld article says type 2.

      • #2273061

It’s my understanding that type 3 gets hit. (And PCL 5.)

Printing issues in Win10? seems like MS has just released some out-of-band updates today 6/16 for some Win10 versions to resolve some of the recent printing problems.

KB4566866 for v2004 (currently in RP ring but will soon be issued to the public)
      KB4567512 for v1903/v1909
      KB4567513 for v1809
      KB4567514 for v1803

Good news, the patch for 2004 is available in public, too.
