    When I hover over the Excel icon on the taskbar, three windows pop up for the three Excel files that I have open. They are ordered from left to right in the order in which they were opened. I really want to have the right-most one to be the left-most one. Is there some way of re-ordering them, short of closing them all and re-opening them in the desired order?? Dragging them to a different order doesn’t seem to work. Or maybe there is some switch somewhere that will allow this?

    See the attached for reference.

      It’s very easy to do what you want with the right tool.

      Download Taskbar Tweaker from here:

      https://tweaker.rammichael.com/

      Once installed, open the interface via the ‘Notification Area’ and in the Taskbar Items > Thumbnails, check Drag to reorder.

      This is a very useful tool to have and has many options to try/use.
      The ‘Drag to reorder’ feature works with other items in the Taskbar such as Outlook, Word, Adobe Acrobat, Firefox open Tabs etc.
      Unfortunately, Taskbar Tweaker can be W10 ‘upgrade version’ sensitive and occasionally breaks.
      The Taskbar reverts back to its original state with a dialog box warning of the incompatibility.
      New, compatible TT versions are made available in a reasonable time scale to download and use and are often created using available W10 ‘Insider’ versions so TT is effectively ready to go when the upgrades are implemented though there is no guarantee that the code used to test in ‘Insider’ versions is the code in the release versions.
      I have been using this tool for maybe 12 years now and a very valuable tool in the box to have.

        OK. I will try it. Do you have Tweaker running all the time (i.e., ‘run at startup’ checked)? Or do you initiate it just when you need it? What other uses does it have for you?

        Hey @Moonshine,
        Have you moved to Windows 11 yet? And if so, have you engaged Explorer Patcher for Windows 11 to get the old taskbar so that Taskbar Tweaker, it is said, will work in Window 11?

        Taskbar-Tweaker-in-Win-11

        Or more generally, are there any Taskbar Tweakers out there working with the old taskbar in Windows 11? Is it working as it did in Windows 10??

      I have Taskbar Tweaker running at startup.
      I primarily use TT to close up the Taskbar pinned program icon gaps and to enlarge those icons by right clicking the window title bar to open the ‘Advanced Options’ and scrolling down to w10_large_icons and changing the data value from 0 (zero)to 1 (one).

        Obviously impatient and slow on the uptake, what with wading through all of those posts and reading between the lines. I gave up before the end. Thanks, I get it now – clearly!!

        @Moonshine:
        What’s the difference between selecting the “Installer” button and the “Portable” button? Which did you download?

      @Moonshine,

      I’ve been using the Taskbar Tweaker ever since June, 2021 after I learned about it from you. It’s been working fine.  However, today my AV (McAfee) quarantined the 7tt_setup.exe file that was in my Downloads folder.  The Tweaker continues to work fine, no problems there, but I wonder what might be causing the AV to object to setup file.  Any ideas?

        Upload the file to virustotal.

        I use Taskbar Tweaker myself and have run into the same problem in the past with my AV (AVG) flagging that same file as a virus when I tried to update the main Taskbar Tweaker program to a newer version.

        I knew something strange was going on because my AV didn’t alert on the program while downloading it (it’s set to prevent downloading of any “virus flagged” files) and also didn’t alert when I “manually” scanned it (I always scan newly downloaded programs before running them.) It only complained when I actually tired to “run” it to install the new version of Taskbar Tweaker.

        It turned out to be a false positive due to AVG’s overly aggressive check for possible “virus like” activity (in this case the modifications Taskbar Tweaker makes to explorer.exe)

        From the Ramen Software FAQs

        Q: My antivirus complains about 7+ Taskbar Tweaker.
        A: It’s a false positive. I guarantee that the tweaker binaries (and any other files on this site, unless specifically noted) are 100% clean.
        Also remember that the tweaker injects into explorer and modifies its memory, which is indeed suspicious.

        AVG finally updated their definitions and it no longer gets quarantined.

        BTW, 7tt_setup.exe is the installer for Taskbar Tweaker and not part of the actual program itself (which is why it’s still working for you.) In your case, since McAfee quarantined it, your version of Taskbar Tweaker is probably not up-to-date (current version is 5.12.3)

      Hi @alejr,

      Yes, Tweaker automatically updates and I have 5.12.3 (Nov 30).  I suppose it will continue to update, since the installer (after Tweaker installation) is no longer in play.  I’ll unquarantine the installer and put it on my McAfee whitelist.

      Thanks for the info; it was  very helpful.
