At the rate Microsoft has been releasing patches the past few months businesses may have to create a new position in their I.T. department dedicated to managing Windows Updates.

There are a slew of new patches coming out not only every week but sometimes within days of a prior release.

I was off last week and before doing so I approved many of the September updates. When I returned yesterday nearly all the September updates were already expired and around 80 new patches issued.

I would guess if there was a chart showing all windows updates released each year it would show a massive curve upwards over the last couple of years with this year topping them all by a huge margin. Houston we have a problem…..uh Houston?….do you read me!?  (crickets chirping)

You control when you get a feature update while simultaneously keeping your devices up to date. If you would like to get an available update right away, select Download and install now. To find out more about this feature, please go to this blog.”

That answers a big question in my mind: How people will stay on 1903 after 1909 is released.

Well, yes, except we’ve never had a “feature update” = version change that’s distributed as a cumulative update before. That’s a good way to let people decide when/if they want to move on to the 1909 “erstwhile service pack.”

So MS hasn’t been showing the KB 4493132 nag screen on Pro machines?

I didn’t realize that. When Lawrence Abrams wrote his detailed account of the inner workings, back in March, he didn’t mention that it was Home only.

Any idea if it’ll be the same nag screen – with the “Do not remind me again” checkbox?

Woddy, I’ve updated my ancient post regarding KB4493132 metadata changes (basically, how the nagging screen look has been slightly changing), with additional information posted by abbodi86 and wsntls. Nothing new, really – just for the sake of consistency. 😉

Is blocking KB 4493132 sufficient to keep the nag off, even now?

I guess MS has taken off, or will be taking off, the block on Pro. (Thx, @b)

There was a lot of confusion back in March about which machines got the patch:

I haven’t figured out why some machines don’t get the KB offered, why some see it as Optional/Unchecked, and while others see it Important/Checked.

Has anybody found a pattern?

They have been pushing to non-business versions – Home and Ultimate.
Pro is considered business along with Ent\Edu.

note that there are no new optional non-security updates for 1507 and the newly EOL’ed 1703 release this October so far [the KB4520010 update is the very last update for 1703 enterprise/education editions].

1903 users will usually get their optional non-security fix towards the end of the month (maybe between the 4th Tue 10/22 and the 5th Tue 10/29, there are five Tuesdays this October)

The ecosystem compatibility thing is just a fancy term for the Compatibility Appraiser (F.K.A KB2952664)

That explains it. Microsoft didn’t want to say it was re-re-…re-releasing KB 2952664.

I hadn’t seen a notice for Security-only patches. Are you anticipating that it’ll be included in next month’s Security-only update?

Yes, i would not be surprised if that happen

they never acknowledged or announced the Appraiser addition to security-only patch (twice)
maybe the third time they will 😀

no, i actually ment security-only updates 🙂
the rollup update already have the Appraiser for a year now, and they annouced it back then

with this fancy echosystem explanation they some up with, i’m just expecting them to apply it to security-only updates too

The DEFCON system includes all versions of Windows.
Not yet time to install ANY October updates.
