Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |
Two in number: firstly, having gone from IE4 through the various service packs, then IE 5, then IE 5.01 SP1 and (as from yesterday) SP2, I found that my automatically-scheduled daily update has stopped happening (about six months back), and I have to do it manually every morning. No idea why.
Secondly, I can’t find a way to get rid of no-longer-existing Favourites from the list of “Offline Web Pages” (mainly Year 2000 ones, actually). Can anyone give an idiot’s guide on how to do this, please?

Can’t say I’ve got a lot of experience with synchronization. Have used the “make available offline” feature but mostly to save pages that I actually don’t want to update (synchronize) so always choose the manual synchronisation property in the “make available offline” customization dialogue.
As for getting rid of, can’t you just use organize favourites to remove those pages from your favourites list? I also picked up a shareware program from zdnet (I think) called Link Sweeper which checks all my favourites and bookmarks for broken/no longer existing links and cleans them out of the list automatically (if you choose). An additional feature is synchronization of favourites and bookmarks between IE and Netscape.
I don’t know if this helps you a whole lot, but at least you know now that somebody has heard your cry for help! Sorry I didn’t reply earlier but had hoped that there may be another lounger out there with more useful info than I could provide.

Have you checked your windows directory for a folder called “offline web pages”? I have one (am at work and therefore am on winnt but am assuming there is a similar folder in other windows versions). That folder contains the list of the pages you’ve made available offline and if you delete them from there they’ll be gone from the synchronization list. I just tried this so I know it works. 
At least that will solve part of your problem.
Hopefully we’ll get the rest of it worked out eventually as well. Will let you know as soon as I come up with other bright ideas.
but it never occurred to me (rarely does!) to attack it using Windows NT Explorer (rather than Internet Explorer) on WINNTOffline Web Pages
interesting comment – I thought that’s what you were doing yesterday when we were discussing the offline web pages folder – guess I need to work on my communication skills a bit…. 
Glad to hear you’ve got the problem solved.
This gets curiouser and curiouser! Sounds to me like NT4 has gotten mixed up between the “offline web pages” folder and “temporary internet files” folder. I’m also on NT4 here and the desktop.ini file is in my “temporary internet files” folder (under winntprofiles“my userid”…) perhaps that list of offline web pages is in your temporary internet folder under your user profile? A long shot, I know, but now that I’m into this I hate to leave it unsolved.
