Currently running Windows 10 Pro Version 1809.

I’ve been trying to move to version 1903 for the last 2 months.  The first week of January, I set Defer Feature Updates to 180. I saw Feature Update to Windows 10 Version 1903 as an option when I ran wushowhide. It never showed up in Settings\Updates and Security. I waited until January 27th and reset Defer Feature Updates to 120. Again, the Feature Update to Windows 10 Version 1903 was available in wushowhide. As of today, it still has not shown up in Settings\Updates and Security as available for download & install.

I do not have Group Policy Settings configured. I tried setting to Enabled, value – 2 (notify download/Install), but when I went to Settings\Update and Security to check on updates, I noticed this – “We’ll ask you to download updates, except when updates are required to keep Windows running smoothly. In that case, we’ll automatically download those updates.” It seemed like this setting defeated the purpose of deferring updates. I changed the setting back to Not Configured. Otherwise, I have followed PKCano’s instructions for clearing the Windows Update queue.

I did make an ISO.exe download for 1903. Is it time to use this?

Leave the Feature deferral setting at 120 days. WAIT for the  the computer to search for updates on its own. It may even take a couple of days. You shouldn’t clear the WU queue when the update you want is listed.

Waiting is my main problem. I waited after the 1st week of January – never showed up. I tried again Jan 27th. Today is 7 days later & it hadn’t shown up. Is that the problem….when following your instructions, should I not go past the initial check of wushowhide when I see the updates that I want (don’t open Services and Disable Windows Update, etc)?

Do you have any Pause set? Are you using any third-party blocker, like WPD or O&OShutup? Do you have metered connections set?

If the answer is “No” to all those
Set Feature update deferral = 120
Set Quality update deferral = 0
In Group Plolicy to Configure Automatic Updates = Enabled valye 2 (this simply keeps the updates from downloading until you click the “download” button, it does not effect deferral in any way)
And WAIT till 1903 shows up.

No Pause set,  Feature Update deferral = 120, I had Quality Update deferral = 15 and Metered Connection On. I had been trying to follow your clear update queue instructions – as I understood them, I should not change the Quality Update deferral to 0 to allow downloads until I verified that the updates I wanted appeared in Settings\Update and Security. Only then would I set deferral to 0, turn off metered connections, disconnect from the internet and reboot for the install.

If you have deferral set you are telling Windows Update NOT to show you the updates. You are NOT going to see 1903!

If you hide updates with wushowhide:
If the updates still appear in the queue, you clear the queue
If the updates you hid DO NOT still appear in the queue, you DO NOT have to clear the queue.

If your 1809 is up to date, turn off metered connections then just use the setting above and WAIT.

To clarify before you reply, when updating, do i check wushowhide first with a metered connection. If I see only updates I want available, how do i proceed to allow download without clearing the queue? If there are updates I want to hide, how should I proceed? When exactly do I need to be concerned with clearing the update queue?

      • #2125316

If your 1809 is up to date there won’t be any updates you need to hide.
You can run wushowhide to see what’s pending if you want to.
You do not need to clear the queue unless you hide something and it still shows in the queue as pending.

Download the iso and update with it.

      Click “Check for updates”.

In my view, this case (and others like it) highlights clearly my view that, in the long run, it’s much better to spend your time creating regular drive images instead of jumping through hoops to avoid updates, upgrades and patches.

Just as there is a great deal of complaining on this site and others on how Microsoft “can’t get it right”, some of those hoops being jumped through don’t always get it right, either.  From The Patch Lady, in reference to installing a Pro key upgrade:

      5. A healthy Windows 7 machine should have no problem installing this key and activating it. A not so healthy one… you may have to manually install missing updates and run the Windows update troubleshooter to get it to healthy condition.

Delaying, avoiding, hiding updates, upgrades and patches can put a PC into a tangle of spaghetti that can prove difficult to unravel, so that the upgrade you’re trying to install can’t find its way in.

Staying fully updated is not living on the edge.  From the “Patch Lady – don’t install optional updates” blog post discussion, by doing proper, regular maintenance and staying prepared with a recent drive image, it’s more like fishing. If it’s not a keeper, all I have to do is throw it back and re-bait my hook.

Woody says 1909 is not quite ready, but many of us here on at AskWoody are running 1909, some (like me) in multiple installations on various platforms without issue.  Yes, Search still has its own difficulties, but it still searches.

It is mentioned frequently on this site that Microsoft is not fulsome in their descriptions in KB articles, and also that they are not fulsome in their acknowledgement of issues experienced by some.  Combine those two factors and try to figure out which unacknowledged issue gets fixed in which KB less than fulsome in its description.  Have you dodged that KB?

For me, dodging updates, upgrades and patches is fraught with potholes and ditches, whereas restoring a recent drive image is easy peasy lemon squeezy.  I’ve always stayed fully patched and upgraded, and other than Search (which I use maybe once every couple of months to look for .tmp files to delete, and still works), I have had no issues to report.

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!
We all have our own reasons for doing the things that we do with our systems; we don't need anyone's approval, and we don't all have to do the same things.

Staying updated and making images is an important part of maintaining the computer. However, it does not help the OP to solve the problem of not being able to upgrade to v1903.

If you decide to install 1903 from the ISO, and you do not want 1909, I would disconnect from the internet during the installation process.  (I am not the anon from above)
