I tried searching the forum before posting my question but did not find any suitable answers.

My operating system is Windows 7 pro.  I have a peer-to-peer network of 6 computers.  My subscription to Trend Micro is ending soon.  What is the best anti virus program now?

Best:  means it does not slow down computer operations and it protects against lots of malware including ransom ware.

    Thank you for your help.

Nothing has changed in the Anti-virus world. Kaspersky and Bitdefender are still the best Anti-virus apps. The paid versions. There are no very good free Anti-virus apps.

The OP has a W7 Pro. Microsoft Security Essentials/Defender isn’t considered as an Anti virus.

In Win7, MSE is the anti virus that W7-Defender is not. Two very different products that do not deserve lumping together with a single slash as a linking device. Defender was a nearly useless feature bundled with purchase of the OS. Microsoft Security Essentials was an additional product that came along later.

Then Microsoft’s infinite wisdom set in where they reused the Essentials brand for another unrelated product, and named the equivalent product in Win8 & 10 Defender, just to complete the confusion cycle.

When speaking of the Win7 platform, MSE is antivirus software that gets definition updates from the same pool that Win10 Defender maintains.

The average client never did get the differences sorted between product or usage.

A recent (mid-May 2020) AskWoody thread about the same sort of question – https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/some-anti-virus-suggestions-for-win-7/#post-2263044 , including (FWIW) my contribution #2263245 about halfway down.

I have to say that I’ve been very impressed with Bit Defender Free:

      Bit-Defender

I don’t know if this is the best antivirus for Windows 7, but it has kept me safe for five years and even caught a bad bug once in a while: Webroot SecureAnywhere. Now I have been using it also in my Mac for close to three years with equally good results. (I still would like to see some more recommendations for AVs to use with Linux Mint.)

Also I use Malwarebytes, the free version, to check for whatever nastiness might still  be lurking around after running the antivirus. Because PK suggested, once upon a time, doing it to “CYA.” No more, no less.

Ex-Windows user (Win. 98, XP, 7); since mid-2017 using also macOS. Presently on Monterey 12.15 & sometimes running also Linux (Mint).

MacBook Pro circa mid-2015, 15" display, with 16GB 1600 GHz DDR3 RAM, 1 TB SSD, a Haswell architecture Intel CPU with 4 Cores and 8 Threads model i7-4870HQ @ 2.50GHz.
Intel Iris Pro GPU with Built-in Bus, VRAM 1.5 GB, Display 2880 x 1800 Retina, 24-Bit color.
macOS Monterey; browsers: Waterfox "Current", Vivaldi and (now and then) Chrome; security apps. Intego AV
