    Woody:

I have an error message installing three updates to Version 1607 Build 14393.1198:

    2017-06 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB4022715) – Error 0x80072afa

    Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7 for Windows 10 Version 1607 and Windows Server 2016 for x64 (KB3186568) – Error 0x80072afa

Windows 10 Creators Update Privacy Settings for x64-based Systems (KB4013214) – Error 0x80072afa

It looks like all of the OTHER USUAL SUSPECTS for Windows 10 Version 1607 installed on June 27:

    Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool for Windows 8, 8.1, 10 and Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, 2016 x64 Edition – June 2017 (KB890830)

Security Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB4023307)

2017-06 Security Update for Adobe Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB4022730)

    2017-06 Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB4023834)

    2017-06 Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3150513)

The last update that successfully installed in May 2017, after installing all of the monthly updates, was:

    2017-05 Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3150513)

The three files that have not yet been installed have failed to install multiple times. I checked what Error 0x80072afa is (Wikipedia was the first source that I recognized) and it says that there are both manual and automated workarounds for this Error. The solution includes privilege elevation which worries me greatly.

I need to use this computer every day.

Do you or anyone else have any idea what is going on here?

The new rounds of ransomware worry me.

Jonathan, I’m not sure what is going on sorry, but if it was my machine, I’d try using wushowhide to install the first two updates separately – see AKB2000005 (steps 3-5) if you aren’t familiar with wushowhide.

I understand that KB4013214 relates to preparation for a version update to Creators Update, so is not vital for immediate security needs.

Before patching, I hope you read @woody’s recent post on June’s updates, and understand his concerns. And please, do a backup before you start 🙂

      Woody:

I am fortunate to live about a fifteen minute drive from the Oak Brook, IL Microsoft Store.

I went in there Thursday at 5:30 or 6:00pm and spoke to one of their techs.

      He did the following:

      1. Went to %WINDIR%/Windows/SoftwareDistribution and cleaned out everything in it.

      2. Reran “Check for Updates” which downloaded the three patches that had been failing and then, IIRC, they installed automatically.

      3.  The first one to install was: 2017-06 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB4022715)

      4.  The second one to install was: Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7 for Windows 10 Version 1607 and Windows Server 2016 for x64 (KB3186568)

      5.  The last one to install was:Windows 10 Creators Update Privacy Settings for x64-based Systems (KB4013214)

Now the Update Status page shows: Good news! The Windows 10 Creators Update is on its way. Want to be one of the first to get it?

Below this statement and question is a hyperlink: Yes, show me how.  The tech told me that clicking that would cause the Creators Update to install.  As I noted before, I am trying to wait for that.

Is deleting the contents of …\SoftwareDistribution a technique that you have seen before?

You should have an option to “Remind me later” on the screen offering you Creators Update now. You may also see (or have seen) a Privacy Settings screen, which also relates; once the Privacy Settings have been revised, your machine is then considered ready for the version update (it also gives the option to “Remind me later”).

Renaming or clearing the Software Distribution folder has been mentioned here before.

      Kirsty:

Thanks for the link. Now that I have read it, I understand that the Microsoft Store tech deleted the contents of …\SoftwareDistribution because one of the messages to which you referred me suggested renaming it.

P.S. I am the “anonymous” on the original message on this thread.
