Installed and ran Windows Update Manager for Windows V1.1b by David Xantos as per Susan’s clear instructions. Simple and effective. What settings are advised for Windows Update?  I need less of MS and more of a Keep It Short and Simple configuration. At present I have Pause Udates set until 4 May. A check shows nothing to download. Many thanks.

An alternative is Windows Automatic Update (WAU) Manager from Carifred, which is about as simple and straight-forward as it gets.

Check the box “Disable the built-in Windows Automatic Updates and use only WAU Manager”.

Click the radio button “Normal – Automatically search for updates, but ask before download and install”

      That’s it.

WUmgr is portable app. There no install. Hope you haven’t downloaded a shady app.

I followed Susan’s instructions to the letter. Thank you for the concern. I note your second image and need to ensure I check this. Do I need to not “PauseUpdates” in Windows now and just allow Wumgr to do it’s thing? Cheers.

Yes. If you are using WUMgr you should not use Pause too. Pause stops the Windows Update Service that WUMgr uses to scan for updates, so it cannot work. Use WUMgr (only) to control updates.
