The little blue bar has been moving back and forth for almost 20 minutes. It’s only supposed to be installng updates for Windows Malicious Software Tool and Security Intelligence Update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus. These has never caused a problem in the past when I just used Windows Update. However, now I’m being offered these two along with two that Patch Lady says to “Defer”, so I need a tool that lets me do them selectively.

    Below is a screenshot.

    Has anyone else encountered this?

I usually reboot a couple of times if this happens, then try again. I always find Windows updates better after a reboot.

Thanks for this! I did try that, but it didn’t change anything. WUMT still hung on the install process. Eventually I gave up and had Windows Update do what it wanted. The update installed in no time at all.

The lengths to which people have to go to get around Microsoft’s sledgehammer-wielded-by-a-blind-man approach to updates … those lengths are frequently obstructed and ultimately exhausting.

The only thing that has worked for me is the registry setting in group policy that mandates that nothing be downloaded or installed without my explicit request. Unfortunately, that doesn’t allow one to select some and not others. Thus, when one update is deferred for very long, other routine ones are delayed as well.

In past questions I’ve tried a couple of the other tools recommended by Patch Lady, and they haven’t worked as described either. I assume there’s some setting in my machine that is having unanticipated effects on these other tools, since they appear to work just fine for other people.

I only ever use MuMgr (I set it to disable Windows Update). Never had an issue on my small sample of machines.

      cheers, Paul

Paul, thanks for this! I will try WUMgr (which is where your “MuMgr” link sent me to.) I see that I downloaded the WUMgr ZIP file back in August when I first tried wrestling with Windows Update. However, I see no evidence that I actually extracted and used it. (I’ve tried a couple of others with longer names, all mentioned within this forum I think.)

So I will clear things out and try that one.
