    • There is a workaround I’ve outlined within my English article now – it might work for Defender in WIndows 8.1, and it works for Windows 10 – and also for MSE in Windows 7 SP 1. HTH:

Scan issues with MSD/Defender Antimalware version 4.18.1908.7

After downloading todays latest MSE (or whatever it’s called now) definitions, scanning issue was present.
Did the work around (checking custom scan) and it worked.
Full scan of C drive successful.

      Thanks gborn!

      KB4503292 (roll up) installed smoothly.
The only little hiccup was when my computer restarted,
and the “windows” logo screen came up and stayed for longer then usual.
finally my log in page appeared.
      All is fine!

That’s the only update I had except the MSRT.
I have not installed MSRT since January.

I’m serious, folks. If your machine is connected to the internet, you need to install this patch.

Ok, after reading this post from woody………

    • The MS information page for the Win7 monthly rollup KB4499164 is reporting problems with McAfee.

You know, I’ve been thinking about the different AV not playing nice with Windows 7 rollups, updates, etc.  ie last month’s AV that were having issues, and now McAfee….
I have MSE for my AV and so far, knock on wood, no problems.
It would be interesting to find out if anyone with MSE is having issues.
My money is on “no” they are not.
      Having said that,
Is MS messing with all the other AV’s that run Windows 7 because they don’t want them to work anymore with Windows 7?
I’m on the fence about continuing to keep W7 after EOL but was wondering what AV I could use.
TBH, I don’t really trust MS with anything Windows 7.
My RDP has always been off.
I think I’m going to hold off a couple of days and stay tuned here to see what issues may or may not be reported.
Years ago when I had XP and they wanted people to upgrade,
I always felt that an update is what bricked my computer.
I’m feeling this is a dejavu.

    • Note: needed to reconfigure Windows Media Player (after not having to for the past 2 months)

      SueW
I, like you and some others, had to reconfigure Windows Media Player a few times.
Like you, it was not needed to be reconfigured the past 2 months.
However, I didn’t need to reconfigure the March updates.
The only difference I can tell is that I did not apply the KB4474419 (SHA2 update)

    • Reporting in on installing March updates

Installed the Servicing Stack KB4490628 this morning. No issues.
(I actually hid all the updates and  the SS update showed up.)
Shut down computer until a little while ago.

Restored my hidden updates KB4474419 and KB4489878 (roll up)
      Installed the roll up.
      No issues.

Did not install the SHA2 update KB4474419
deceided that I have until July to install it.
Waiting to see if their are any hiccups down the road for those who did install it.

I haven’t figured out why some machines don’t get the KB offered, why some see it as Optional/Unchecked, and while others see it Important/Checked. Can anybody else discern a pattern?

For testing purposes, i set WU settings to “Check for updates but let me choose..” and checked “Give recommended updates…” as expected, got KB4493132 as important update, unchecked (pending)  can those reports give more details of their settings? a screenshot maybe? 🙂

      abbodi86
My settings are “never check for updates”
Here’s a snip it of KB4493132  listed as important unchecked.

    • The KB2952664 functionality was rolled into the Monthly Rollups in October last. Perhaps they changed the metadata to show it superceded by one of the later Rollups, since it is no longer needed as a separate update.

PKCano It does not show up in my installed updates either!?
It has always been in my hidden updates.
The only updates I’ve been doing since March 8 (which I did the Feb. rollup then and took the snip it after that which it shows up)
are Microsoft Security Essentials Definitions and I don’t do that through Windows Update.
      hmmmm….???

maybe when I hid KB4493132 it removed kb2952664

    • reporting in regarding KB4493132 appearing when I manually did a windows update search.

KB4493132 did appear as important but unchecked.  I hid it.
However, what I did notice in my hidden updates…
Comparing the snip it shot I took earlier this month (march 8th the first attachment)
to what it shows today when I hid the kb4493132….(2nd attachment)
KB2952664 was not there anymore (in my hidden updates) where it has been there.
      Anyone else?
