Whatever you want to call it, I took it out with the trash. Between Linux Mint & Chromium OS, I’m all better now. My wife’s laptop still has 10 only because she’s used to it and not a fast tech learner. I do have a desktop rig running 10 and an old Dell laptop with XP because of a few legacy programs – neither is hooked to the ‘net and they only get plugged in once or twice a month. Financial & billpay stuff is done on an old netbook with no HDD that boots off a read-only Puppy USB stick. I feel ten years younger & twenty pounds lighter with the M$ monkey off my back.

Back when I discovered AW, I had hair.
After many years of reading AW I no longer have hair.
Coincidence? I think not. Wood, where’s my hair?

      HBD Woody.

I can’t help but wonder how many of the reported WinX users are like myself – running an unactivated WinX install with a local account, and locked down about as tight as I can get it. M$ isn’t gaining a dang thing from me. It’s my only WinX rig, and it’s not my primary.

      My #1 pet peeve…

      Me: “Thank you.”
      Whomever: “No problem.”

Yeah, it has nothing to do with M$, Apple, or computing/tech in general.
      It just grinds my gears.

      Merry Christmas AW peeps.

    • Y’all probably already know this…

Windows 10 Creators Update may download updates over metered connections even if you don’t want it to.

One caveat, if I may. If you’re considering a “Report This Post” option, consider having it as a feature only available to those who are both registered and logged in.

For a minute there I thought you’d kicked me to the curb… 😉

I’ve never understood why ‘Process Explorer’ wasn’t baked into Windows’ admin tools.

I’ve used Nir’s tools for over ten years. What I like most about them is his emphasis on function. Maybe not the best looking GUI, but his tools work like I expect them to. Basic GUI, small footprint, big on getting the job done. When I need a screwdriver, I’m not looking for something designed by Tiffany’s, I want a basic piece of quality steel (preferably with a handle attached) capable of removing and inserting screws.

I’ve been using the R52 special build without issue on an AOD150 and an AOD250. The R55 special apparently has a lot more goodies because it requires an 8gig flash drive where the R52 can run on a 4gig. I haven’t done a R55 build yet. Try it and see…

Most WiFi issues on Acer netbooks running Chromium are due to Broadcom wifi cards. Arnold’s “special” builds include drivers for these (and most others) and also for the touchpads. The latest “special” build download is “Cx86OS_R55-8777.0-Special.7z”. I’m running builds based on “Cx86OS_R52-8268.0-Special.7z” on two different Acer netbooks, both are running mighty fine.

I’ve been tinkering with homebrew Chromebooks (and even Chromeboxes) for several years. If someone wants to road test a Chromebook, and they’re comfortable with creating bootable flash media, I strongly suggest compiling a flash drive with one of Arnold The Bat’s builds and running a notebook off of it for a few days or more to see if a Chromebook can satisfy their needs.

      @ Doc …
“If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it”.

That made me LOL. Really, it did. Scared the dog & almost woke my wife.

I generally don’t do things because I need to. I do things because I wonder if I can, and I’ve been doing it since the 8088 was the new kid in town. The little Win8.1 tablet in question has already suffered through at least two different flavors of Android and, most recently, ChromiumOS. You don’t even want to know what I’ve put some of my other gear through.

Woody’s a busy dude – I don’t expect him to glean every single detail from every single tech article posted on the vast entirety of the interwebz.
