      Thanks

Both iphone and ipad hotspots use wifi. They are both setup the same way that i can tell.

What I ultimately decided on this was to get a better monitor. Dell has some rally good ones that are already set up with KVM and auto KVM. Should be here this week so I will give some feedback once I get comfortable with it.

      Thanks for all the advice.

Thanks for all of the replies. To elaborate a little more, both computers will be side by side. My wife who is not technical at all will have to be able to access the home computer infrequently, so the change to that computer must be easy and seamless.

I use RPC for remote access to my office when working from home. I don’t see something like that would work on the same monitor, but I can look into it.

      Hi Rick,

Will this process work on new Win 10 machines from Dell or are they already set up upon arrival?

The Mini Tower has slightly better air flow… perhaps of consideration if you do a lot of processor-intensive tasks that make the internal fans runs more frequently. Other than that there’s little difference.

      Thanks Rick and everyone else,

It looks like the tower is the best option for me.

I will look into getting quotes for the smallest SDD I can get and then plan on installing larger ones once they arrive.

You didn’t mention whether you are considering the Small Form Factor or Mini Tower variants of the Optiplex 3070

      Thanks Rick,

I haven’t decided yet on which box from Dell. Any advantages on either box? I thought they both had space for multiple drives, but I will check again tomorrow. They will both fit into the space available. The Form factor being smaller will have more room for the multitude of cables and such. Does anyone know if the 3.5″ drive will fit in the smaller box?

Generally speaking you can self-configure some Dell systems.

      Thanks Noel,

I was thinking about this exact same approach earlier today. I am glad to see it come up here. I can get the smaller 256 SSD from Dell and then add a 1TB one from a different supplier. That should be plenty of space for the foreseeable future. I have 12 GB of RAM now but with the SDD, I am hoping it will be faster.

Some 85% of the time when I’ve seen a Windows 7 system have a “nearly full” disk, it’s been at least mostly one of the Windows 7 update bugs. CBS log bloat, WinSXS bloat… so please check for that first.

Thanks Mn, I will look into that.

I checked the SMART option in the bios. It was not checked (disabled) which sounds like why Macrium had an issue. I checked the box and will do the same with all the others as well. As these machines age, it would be a good idea to log any potential issues. They are on all the time so I am anticipating more issues, but hopefully not.

It looks like I was successful in replacing the old HDD with a new one and got everything up and running again. I used TeraByte backup and it was able to create an image so that I could reinstall everything. Surprisingly Macrium was unable to work as well and would not finish the image backup. I plan on buying a copy of TeraByte for my set of 4 computers.

Thanks everyone for all of your help. I never would have been able to accomplish this without it. I learned a lot in the process and now feel much more comfortable in taking this kind of failure head on.

As I mentioned before, I will be replacing them at some point with Win 10 Pro. At that point, I will be able to transfer everything from the old to the new using the same process.

I did delete the prior backup from Macrium. I can probably run it again. I have a 2TB WD Passport drive so I have plenty of room.

I ll run it again and see how it comes out. Here’s the link to the report.

It did not complete the backup
