AskWoody LoungerApril 3, 2023 at 5:53 am in reply to: Windows 10 computer requires creating Microsoft account to get past first screen #2548542Make sure that you have your internet / network ethernet cable “disconnected”.
I find when you install W10 for the first time, if the ethernet cable is connected W10 can force you to use a microsoft account. If you plug it out W10 normally allows you to log into a local account as no network is detected ….

AskWoody LoungerApril 2, 2023 at 10:18 am in reply to: Heads up on possible fix for missing display settings #2548387I’m going to guess that it was slightly not happy and a new patch just made it behave. There’s nothing in the older updates that would have triggered this.
Indeed, easy solution as it was a new install.

AskWoody LoungerWon’t work need to install from bootable usb to recover the GeoBook. Only 32GB SSD in it.

AskWoody LoungerIts not a standard PC it is a GeoBook that needs reinstallation. It shipped with S Mode. Sorry I should have been more clear.

AskWoody LoungerSounds like Windows S.
But also a recommended option in all editions of Windows 10 for nearly five years:
Yes but the check box was not ticked by default on new installations!

AskWoody LoungerWe see this all the time where paused were unpaused. Also noticed while installing 10 pro on machines last week that “Installing apps only from the microsoft store was set to “Store only” so for instance if you were not in the know you wouldn’t be able to install chrome etc. Ohhh how we love you Mr Microsoft ….

AskWoody LoungerSolved the network discovery problem it was the firewall that was blocking sharing so created inbound and out bound rules.

AskWoody LoungerAnyone come accross this instance where Network Discovery will not turn on?

AskWoody LoungerI think it is the SMB 1.0/CIFS Client, but when I click on “Turn Windows features on or off” rather than default window it opens Server Manager and its add role wizard not the Turn Windows features on or off window?

AskWoody LoungerUpdates done but for some reason I can not turn on network sharing in ” Network and sharing center ”
In “Advanced sharing settings” I turn all on and save but I do not get an administrator permission window to allow the changes I just click save and the window closes. When I go back into advanced sharing settings all the settings I switched on are now off.
In services DNS Client is set to automatic and is on
Function Discovery Provider Host is set to automatic and is on
Function Discovery Resource Publication is set to automatic and is on
SSDP Discovery is set to automatic and is on
UPnP Device Host is set to automatic and is on
Any ideas guys..

AskWoody LoungerThank you Susan on further invistagation I found the server has not been updated in 16 months so not supprised it is having client server connection issues.
What is best practice in updating here?
Will I grab the updates from the MPL and install one after another?
It is not a DC or print server just shares and CRM.

AskWoody LoungerDid you select EFI boot or MBR? It should probably be EFI.
The usual reason you can’t see drives after a USB boot is a lack of drivers for the disk controller / motherboard.
According to this thread you need the BIOS in AHCI, non-RAID mode. https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=327138
See this thread as well. https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/comment/842090/#Comment_842090cheers, Paul
Only option is UEFI or GPT Paul
