    • I just saw that warning about the Adrozek malware on Zdnet and you’ve already posted it here at Woody’s. Another nasty hijacker and well written, unfortunately.

Microsoft exposes Adrozek, malware that hijacks Chrome, Edge, and Firefox   Dec 10, 2020

“End users who find this threat on their devices are advised to re-install their browsers,” Microsoft said today.

AOMEI have a free 12 month licence for  Backupper Pro (separately, Backupper iDevice to computer and Multicloud too).

      https://www.aomeitech.com/partners/2020-anniversary-giveaway-5566.html

Registration key comes in the downloaded zip file (so, no registration to get it).

I am not affiliated in any way.

Yes Aoemi Backupper Pro reviews are very good too, and free has a good ring to it.

Edit: No registration either? sounds good. But im sentimental and Macrium free got me started 🙂

You’ve already tried Dell’s way (link below) and un-reinstall hasn’t worked, so my suggestion is basic, you may have already done it.

File Explorer > Program Files. Find the program entry and delete it. An Uninstall sometimes leaves the entry there and the machine thinks a program is still installed.

A search showed many questions about SupportAssist probs. Dell’s directions for uninstall and reinstall have some steps, including removing 5 Windows services and restarts. (Hope my moms doesn’t need her Dell done, i’d never talk her through it on the phone.)

      https://www.dell.com/support/article/en-us/sln302741/supportassist-for-pcs-and-tablets-clean-uninstall-and-reinstall?lang=en

Dell: “In the past, we perform a clean uninstall by removing directories and registry files. This should not be necessary anymore.”

On a dozen computers since Win98 days I’ve been using Norton A/V, Deluxe and now Norton 360 with no infections or malware (Norton auto-quarantined them). It nearly always ranked in the top three via AV Comparatives.org and Wilders security. No interference with VPNs Nord and Mullvad. Norton 360 now has its own basic VPN included, but could use more server locations.

Norton Deluxe/360 is installed on this Win10 laptop four years and hasn’t had issues with Win10 updates or anything else i remember. Many options to use it like you want.

Im using Windows Defender on the Win10 desktop and it has been good with no problems at all. Free. It auto-quarantined several legit malwares. Set and forget.

(old) Used AVG Pro for a couple of years on two XP machines, but its updates had problems with Windows and i reinstalled Norton.

WinDefender security has become so good for my use that i may just ditch paid third-party AV.

    • in reply to: Pulling the trigger on Win10 Version 2004 #2310033

My home network comprises two desktops (one with ethernet, one with wifi) and a laptop.  I had previously gotten the network setup so all three computers could share files, etc on any other computer.  However, since I installed Windows v2004 on all devices, none of my computers can see the other computers from file explorer.

      Any thoughts?

I’m using v2009 20H2 (update to v2004) and just switched to WiFi on the laptop and desktop to test, both are Realtek 8822BE 802.11ac  wireless LAN, and they are working.

A search found this thread of similar wifi probs, maybe it will help.
      https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-networking/wifi-not-working-after-windows-10-2004-update/80a85104-a575-41d8-8aae-2f90924d16c2

Edit: I may have missed the point, here’s a thread on broken home networks, not just WiFi:

Updated from v1909 to  v2004 + v2009 20H2 on a laptop and desktop six days ago on Oct 31. v2004 was defcon 3 and v2o09 20H2 had bug fixes and minor updates. Used the Window 10 Update Assistant from Microsoft, took about two hours with several auto-restarts. (I’m on a slowish 20Mbps aDSL connection.)

My Realtek Audio got hosed on the desktop with no speaker or headphone output – eventually fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling the same Asus Realtek driver 8971.1 WHQL. Weirdly, the MSI laptop with the same v2004+v2009 20H2 update and Realtek audio driver works fine.

No lost profiles or certificates, but i’ve a simple set up, not a business.

The old Brother printer (MFC-J985DW) needed software and a FIRMWARE update from the Brother site.

Games run fine. But the X-box Gamebar is erratic, MS says there’s a patch coming. I disabled it in Settings.

Desktop has an Asus Z370 mobo, the MSI laptop has an Intel HM170 mobo. Both with nVidia GTX’s.

Thanks to all here with their tips and fixes, it helps with these confused renamed sometimes buggy updates.

    • I saw that warning, then Defcon 3, and thought “I haven’t been hit by the numerous bugs in Win10 updates the past few years (except the desktop profile bug that corrects itself two minutes after signing in), so what the heck.

And running sfc /scannow after a Win10 update is habit now, unfortunately it nearly always has to repair files.

      Cheers to successful updates :tipsamug:

    • Success updating to the latest Win 10 v1909  18363.815  yesterday with no problems on two machines.

A desktop with an Asus Z370 mobo and Brother printer, and a MSI laptop with an Intel Z170 mobo and old HP printer.

Thankyou to the brave Win10 updaters who posted their successes earlier.

    • in reply to: Deal on Windows 10 Pro #2242821

URCDkeys has a Win 10 Pro key for $17 I bought two months ago. Registered and gave them an email address to send the new Pro key to. I haven’t been contacted or spammed by them since then.

In my ‘old’ Win10 Home installation, I entered the new Pro key in Windows activation “Change product key”, Enter, Windows updated, restarted twice, and has worked fine since then. >Winver< confirmed the upgrade to Pro and now i have tools like GPEdit, plus i wanted to try out Hyper V and Sandbox.

A note states ”… You can’t upgrade from Home system to Pro system, download Pro first…” but that is exactly what i did, upgrade directly from Home to Pro – Win10 downloaded the needed updates after i entered the new Pro product key.

Urcdkeys is based in Hong Kong, has a good rep, and buys unused volume game and OS keys from vendors.

    • Per MS, update the Realtek Bluetooth driver to v1.5.1012 or later. I updated to the later v1.5.1014 in October, it works on my v1903 and per MS also on v1909 (I’m not updating to v1909 for a few days, waiting for any show-stoppers to be reported in it.)

      Same article: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4529832/updating-to-windows-10-version-1903-on-devices-with-some-driver-versio

Microsoft has identified compatibility issues with some driver versions for Bluetooth radios made by Realtek. You will need to update to driver version 1.5.1012 or later to remove this safeguard hold.  Any earlier version of the driver is affected by this issue.

    • in reply to: Update 1803 to 1809 or 1903? Which is worse? #2003476

I updated to v1903 in July (May update ha!) and no probs with it MikeyD215. On a 2015 sacrificial MSI laptop (Intel HM170 mobo, i7 cpu) and a 2018 desktop build (Asus Intel Z-370 mobo, i7 cpu) no problems. Some had network connection probs with an Asus-Realtek ethernet adapter, but my Asus mobo uses an Intel I219V NIC that is fine.

Have since updated both to the latest v1903 build 18362.449 with all the October patches and updates, that did not give either platform any problems.
