      Thanks everyone,

I delayed the restore and tried the other suggestions first.

Deleting the icon cache solved the problem.

Thank you to everyone who made suggestions.ย  I really appreciate that you took to time to help me.

      Kind regards to all,
      Stay safe

Yes – will do a restore – but it would be good to know which (if any) M$ update might be causing it.ย ย  Oh well, c’est la vie.ย ย  Thank you.

      Thanks Bluetrix,

First thing I checkedย  ๐Ÿ™‚ย ย  the offending icons do have correct pointers to the targeted .exe file

    • My Windows 10 Home 64-bit V 1903 (OS Build 18362.592) only shows “Feature update to Wondows 10 Version 1909” as an optional update.

My solution:ย ย  Both my wife and I have copies of the password manager software on our laptops.ย  She has details of my password manager login credentials and I have hers, so either of us can get to the other’s passwords if necessary.ย  This way, the details are kept secure.

I’ve been using eWallet for many years.ย  It’s a great product IMHO, and has versions for iOS and Android which I’ve used both of to enable syncing between my laptop and my phones.ย  Only down side from my experience is the AU$20 cost for Windows PC and AU$10 for Android and iOS versions, but gee, it saves a lot of hassles if you keep your password data up to date.ย  You can check it out hereย ย ย  https://www.iliumsoft.com/

BTW – I am in no way associated with the vendor, just a satisfied user.

    • in reply to: Can Windows Update status mess up your Windows activation? #35516

@Nd60 – Thanks. There were no hardware/driver/software/firewall changes – only Win Update.

Rather than trying to work out what caused the problem, the non-techo me decided it was probably quicker to call M$oft support, explain the situation, and ask for reactivation.

A 40 minute phone call to M$oft AUS, phone redirection to India, and the Indian agent remoting in to my laptop, it was found that service that monitors activation had been corrupted (can’t remember which one it was – the agent was working too quickly and randomly (?) for me to catch the name!)

This reactivation caused the licence key to change from my original one.

But all seems well (for now at least).

      Cheers,
      Steve

I decided I was in Group A for Win Update…. so, I applied all outstanding updates. Went well, but a few days later, and now Windows keeps asking me to activate Windows. I’ve tried about a dozen times, but keep getting the message “Windows can’t activate. Try again later”

Why is this happening? any particular update I should uninstall? Any suggestions welcomed and appreciated

      Hi Woody – I’ve decided I’m in Group A.

One question….. one of the Important updates I have is “Office XP Service Pack 3” (52.3MB) under the heading “Office 2002/XP”.

This update has been in my list for over 12 months (2 years?), but just won’t install. I’m running Office 2007 on Win8.1 x64.

Do you have any suggestions on how I can either install this, or “make it go away”? Or do I just continue to ignore it?
