This sounds interesting, but Iโ€™d like to make sure: can SearchMyFiles or SwiftSearch look for text strings within a document?

Windows file explorer has gotten much better at finding strings in many commonly used files, but I have used Deskrule in the past for deep diving.ย  It’s an old school website and the full version is not free.

I also use Nirsoft apps, but never “Search My Files”. I’ve tried Everything, and a couple of other third party apps and settled on WizTree as an alternate to Win File Explorer. However, I checked “Search My Files” and you are right, it’s a wonderful tool. Thanks for you post!

Thanks for your post.ย  A few weeks ago I manually enabled the PPT for TPM 2. It worked perfectly.ย  As long a Microsoft decides to allow Intel 7 generation chips I’ll be good to go.ย  My hunch is they will.

I’ve downloaded the correct updated BIOS for Win 11 for my Asus motherboard (X299 Mark 1) but haven’t flashed it yet. Since the manual config worked well I’m debating if the BIOS upgrade provides anything more than that.

I keep my BIOS regularly updated anyway, so it’s the most current prior to the Win 11 BIOS update.

Do you have any thoughts on doing the BIOS update if the manual config was already done and successful?

    • in reply to: Directing files to be saved on a second hard drive #2381908

Am I actually moving a folder? IOW is the original folder on the C: drive going to be deleted? Or is this just pointing to new additional folders on the D: drive where the files will be saved?

In File Explorer, the basic “right click hold and drag” will always pop up a reconfirm window with “Move here”, “Copy here”, “Create shortcut here”.ย  Selecting “Move here” will move (not copy” the folder and/or files you have selected.ย  If you want to retain the folder on the source disk, to not select “Move”.

I keep my boot drive lean so my image backups don’t take long to make.ย  I keep many folders and files on second disks and retain some on the source disk.ย  ย The stuff I don’t retain on the source disk is everything in my OneDrive cloud and Google Drive cloud.ย  Combined, it’s over 130 GB.ย  ย These files only exist on a second disk an in the cloud.

I do keep archives of EVERYTHING on multiple external backup disks and sync changes to them a couple of time a week.

I don’t use storage sense, but it does seem much improved from the first version.

Good see another Shadow Protect user. Rare. I’ve been using SP 5 for desktop (not SPX) for probably 15 years. It’s never failed me or any of the many friends and family that use it.

      3 sugestions:

      1. Run the free Malwarebytes scan
      2. From CMD window (run as administer):ย  sfc /scannow
      3. In Win 10 settings, search “Index options”.ย  Clear and re-index all your files.
      4. restart computer

Whoops!ย  Not being able to find “Trader” is my fault.ย  It’s was the user name of the machine I was using when I made the notes.ย  I neglected to remove it and replace it with “C:\Users\*username*\AppData\”.ย  ย Knowing this you can now insert your user name and check to see if Revo Uninstaller deleted the entire folder, or just its contents.

I’ve used Revo Uninstaller for many years.

    • in reply to: Taskbar will be only at bottom – Bothers me a lot! #2379163

The task bar won’t take any screen space if you toggle on the “Auto Hide” feature. If you haven’t tried it, check it out. It’s in taskbar settings. With auto hide on, the taskbar disappears and will pop up only when you move your cursor to the bottom (or in your case the side) of the screen or tap the Win key. I’ve used auto hide for many years. I’m assuming it will still be available in Win 11. It will be rude awakening if not!

I run a “fat” task bar with a long row of tool bar icons under the normal task bar, but it makes no difference with auto hide.

I would not be surprised to see some third party software ware that fixes this. Maybe Power Toys.

    • in reply to: How to remove Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 Deluxe #2379161

MS Flight Sim 2020 (all versions) is a windows store app, not conventional installed software.

The entire data repository is here:
      C:\Users\Trader\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.WindowsStore_8wekyb3d8bbwe
You need to have windows File Explorer set to show ‘hidden items’ to see “AppData”.

I know know this from first hand experience and needing to remove FS 2020 Deluxe. I’ve since reinstalled it.

      Here are my original notes:
      5:19 PM 10/26/2020
Location of FS2020 installed files – after uninstall, this folder should NOT be present. If it IS present AFTER and uninstall, then it can be manually deleted.
      C:\Users\Trader\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe
      C:\Users\Trader\AppData\Roaming\MICROSOFT FLIGHT SIMULATOR\PACKAGES

With some digging you can verify this info. For me manually deleting the two folders noted above recovered the entire 100 GB space taken by FS 2020. There were no surprises or issues with doing the manual uninstall. After removing, I did a computer restart. I DID make a full image backup for safety before deleting FS 2020 manually but I did not need to use it.

Definitely get a new computer.ย  ย Eleven years of use on the original hardware with no major changes is extraordinary, yet to continue using it will likely burn up extraordinary amounts of your time on first one thing then another.

A lot of useful nuggets in this thread!

What about “fast” VS “slow” charging?

Obviously, allowing “Fast” charging while the phone is on heats it up significantly more than using a normal slow charging speed.

My take is that the cool slow charge is much more battery friendly than a hot fast charge.

I primarily use a slow charge unless I’m short of time.

      Comments?

    • in reply to: Tomorrow is World Backup Day #2354276

I use an oldie-but-goodie imaging app from Storagecraft:ย  Shadow Protect Desktop 5.ย  It has saved me and many friends over the years.ย  Never failed.ย  I make take a full image once a week and take daily incremental images in-between on both my laptop and primary desktop.ย  All images are immediately copied to a second external drive, then once a week or so everything gets syncedย  again to four more drives, (two SSDs and two spinning disks) and to a cloud as well.ย  The extended redundancy would be over kill to some, but it gives me an easy look back fail safe time machine for recovering individual files, whole folders or whole disk images.

In addition, I keep spare SSD M2 drives and occasionally burn a current image to one then temporarily replace the appropriate active boot drive for a test. I keeps me nimble with the recovery process.

Windows 10 Pro 20H2 all machines (4).ย  Intel / Nvidia all around.ย  Chrome, Brave, Firefox and TOR.ย  FreeFileSync, Revo Uninstaller Pro, Microsoft Flight Sim 2020,ย  Sysinternals and Nirsoft utilities, AnyDesk, Core Temp, Wiztree, VLC, Audacity, and more.ย  Life is good.

I’ve fully updated 4 machines, 3 laptops and a desktop.ย  I used windows update to do it.ย  All four were/are running 20H2.ย  I first installed all the non-optional updates, then installed the optional cumulative update 1649.

    • in reply to: March madness drives printers to blue screen #2351141

I have not installed KB5000802 yet. So glad I not because just checked my printer driver type per link below and found I have Type 3 printer drivers, not Type 4. Type 3 is the one that causes then BSOD.

In addition, I have a middle of road Brother B&W laser printer DCP-L2540DW and Brother printers were NOT mentioned as ones affected by the patch bug.

I know a fix has been released even now via the windows update screen, but will still hold off a while.

Has anyone checked your printer driver type?
