So… the backup from iOS 13.7 was MUCH slower than normal… even though I ALWAYS back up locally – never, ever to the cloud.

Installation of iOS 14 just worked with nary a hiccup… except a really, REALLY annoying prompt that I cannot finish the setup without setting up Apple Pay. (NO – I won’t, Apple!)

Hmm.. the ‘Settings’ icon now shows an issue … but pressing on it just brings up the ‘New Voicemail’ chooser dialogue. Whut?

OK, I just ignored it and  got rid of it by choosing ‘Setup later in wallet’. It’s still moaning on about ‘Apple Pay’. Snore…

OK… looked again and the screen now shows no updates over ‘Settings’… no more prompts to set up Apple Pay. Yay!

And that’s about it – all sorted… so far 🙂

I didn’t have your problem but I have had several and spent all day trying to get iOS 14 working right on iPhone XR.

Does anyone here with Fx browser for iOS know why Mozilla says that I can make it the default (finally) browser in iOS 14 for iPhone but I need to upgrade Fx browser from current 28.2 (updated yesterday) to Fx 29 yet there is NO Fx 29 in the Apple app store?

I can make Edge or Chrome browsers the default browser in iOS 14 and do it now. So, what is with Mozilla having a help article about making Fx the default browser right now in iOS 14 for iPhone but then I can’t find Fx 29 in Apple app store?

Oh, and in iOS 14, supposedly I can ditch the awful Apple mail and make Thunderbird default. But I can’t see how to do that either.

You need a new version approved by Apple for changing Fx to default as it adds a new setting in the browser for iOS 14.

Getting used to Siri behaviour in iOS 14… which was really confusing at first.

Previously, a long press on the Home button brought up a full-screen Siri input… now it just invokes a smaller ‘shades of Bill’n’Ted trippy’ multi-coloured floating orb… which is now the Siri ‘waiting for input’ notifier*:

And also shows you that the microphone has been activated.

I like that a press on the orb and ‘Siri… Turn Bluetooth on’ (or ‘Off) now actually shows the radio switch being toggled in Settings > Bluetooth.

I note also that previous iOS major version updates have often resulted in poor battery life for a few days at least whilst background ‘stuff’ goes on. I haven’t noticed that with this update.

*Why does this remind me of ‘Johnny 5’s’ demand for ‘Input! More Input!‘?

(Apologies for huge size of screenshot. Is there a ‘recommended size’ I can use as a guide? I would like to aim for consistency.)

Why is it bad news ? Who reboots his iPhone and why ?
I only reboot after an iOS updates…Just like I never shut down my PC and only reboot after OS updates.

There is no setting for default mail app, yet (I run iOS 14.2 beta 1).

I seldom reboot as well, but generally when Apple Support tells me I have to do resolve an issue. 🙂

Hackers don’t hack iPhones. This is FUD.

Rebooting may free some RAM but not to a degree that you may notice performance difference.
Apple issues iOS updates every 2-3 months. The process reboots the device so there is no need for manual reboots.

I’ve had to reboot a few times over the years when an app would freeze or just backing out didn’t work to bring the system back on its feet. No big deal and it works. This is why Apple gives you the step by step process to get back into operation. It happens.

I agree with you… and I’m not at all worried about ‘hackers’.

I, for one, am actually glad about Apple’s iron control over its eco-system. It’s one of the reasons I decided to sign up to it, despite knowing its downsides.

I LIKE a genuine ‘walled garden’ [so shoot me] if I benefit from its security… but I digress.

I HAVE noticed performance improvements after rebooting an iOS (and now iPadOS) device, especially as my iOS devices get older… so will continue to reboot them regularly when they show signs of slowing… and when that doesn’t work, I’ll do a full ‘factory restore’.

It’s simple, and sometimes a little time-consuming… but I benefit.

Verizon upgrades robocall protection for iOS 14

With the introduction of a new setting in iOS 14 to Silence Junk Callers, Verizon is able to provide further protections for iOS customers by auto-blocking potential fraud and spam calls and sending them directly to voicemail.

This advanced setting is now auto-enabled on devices with iOS 14, resulting in a decrease in spam calls received, with no action from the customer needed. Customers can always view incoming calls in Recents, as well as toggle the setting off if they wish to still have access to spam call alerts.

After just 5 days iOS 14 has ~30% install base.

iOS 14 launched just last Wednesday, September 16, and comes with a number of new features that are proving very popular with users including home screen widgets, picture in picture support, and much more. And data is backing that up as iOS 14 adoption is approaching an impressive 30% in just five days while iOS 13 hit 20% last year after seven days.

What’s interesting is the battery life on my iPad is better than it ever has been since I first installed iPadOS 13.

It can. I’ll be upgrading as soon as 14.0.1 is released. Once it’s out, I’m jumping even before 14.1.

There won’t be any iOS 14.0.1 or iOS 14.1
I am on iOS 14.2 and public beta is also out.

In the past it seems as the update goes through indexing and the process of getting a major update in place, the battery on my iPhone had a shorter life while it was running the new iOS initially. After a couple hours or more the battery was back down to normal. I’ve heard others talk about this also. Was asking Nathan the question since he brought up battery life on a new major iOS and was going to monitor the situation to report back on the status.

Even though 14.2 is in beta, Apple can release a .0.x update (such as a 0.1 update) to fix bugs in between releases. It’s possible Apple could just wait for 14.2, but I’ve seen it happen before where an in-between update was pushed out.

The reason I’m directing this to your attention is in her post she refers to a link on Apple’s forum where folks are suggesting iOS 14 may have something to do with this possible malware pop up.

Knock one possible culprit off the list. Good to know. It hasn’t hit any of my devices so could be like Nathan said, having a good ad blocker would be one way to avoid this Irritating pop up. I do realize there is an option to block pop ups in Safari, but it is also a good idea to have a third party ad blocker. Yep, I can generally sense what Apple has planned. 🙂 I’ve used Apple devices for so long it’s almost easy to know what direction they’re going.

I updated to iOS 14.0.1 on my iPhone 8 Plus and so far I like the changes. Nothing too major where I’m concerned with apps. I keep things basic. I like the new look and feel for Widgets, Location Services gives the option to set a 15 minute limit refresh mode. I have location set to only allow while using in a few apps. I’ll update if something goes haywire, otherwise it looks good. Will update the iPad later today.

Reference my post above … not all is well with iOS 14.0.1

Currently on the iPad running iPadOS 13.7 as I post on AW, and holding off for iPadOS 14.0.1  Reason for this – after updating to iOS 14.0.1 last night with the iPhone 8 Plus, I’m having issues after logging in to the AW forum and giving a “Thanks” to any comments posted for a topic/thread. It takes me to the top header for AW site and doesn’t activate the “Thanks”. Weird.

With the new iOS 14.0.1, after logging in I’m prompted to either give access to saving my password and I tap “Not now”. I never save passwords on my Apple devices, and have “auto fill” set to “Off”. After the update, the options for Passwords app were set as default to “On”. I thought maybe there was a tie in for a glitch when logging in, causing a problem with the app settings and when logging into AskWoody. I went ahead and put everything to where it was Prior to the update for the Passwords app, choosing not to save or use auto fill. This made no difference as to the problems I’m having as mentioned above after login. I did successfully post a comment with the iPhone, but can’t activate a “Thanks” to any other forum member’s post.

I’m stumped. Right now I can only successfully use all features of this forum when on my iPadOS 13,7. If someone can help figure out if there’s a bug with Safari or an app that’s interfering with the login process I would appreciate it.

Thanks much for this thread. I quickly glossed through much of it to read what y’all are thinkin’ and doin’.

I’d owned an ancient iPod Classic, an iPhone 3GS, a 5, a 7 Plus, and lately an iPod touch. And I’ve excellent friends who run them/ I’ve lots of experience with their mobile stuff. But my work and personal computers are PCs. I’ll hang with Apple’s mobile devices for now.

But for six years Apple’s iOS has had consistenly reliability issues for many end-users. I get that new stuff means new features, so there are always trade-offs. And an Apple engineering manager is among my many favorite friends.

Apple is still like most any other company, and prefers to churn us into new stuff which takes more of my time and/or money than I’d prefer to grant them. I still see their policies of churning tech as the same pathological tendency our species can have to love change for the sake of change. That’s expressed in the very good, very thoughtful new flick, “We Are As Gods“, about Stewart Brand. I’d met him via his Long Now Foundation presentations. And I know people who know and admire him. The movie has a surprisingly eclectic tone which I dug, and the filmmakers included opinions of those who disagree with Stewart’s. Scientifical, right? 😉

I seldom sit still for documentaries, so if someone like me who prefers fiction is commending one about our attitudes toward science and progress, that means a little bit more.
