@Brocktoon falls into the second condition of auto scanโ if .NET Security CU is already installed, .NET Preview CU will be offered and installed
Win10 Home do not have any delay measures (except pause and metered connection)

AskWoody PlusOctober 25, 2020 at 11:18 pm #2307001When .NET preview, KB 4580980, I just used wushowhide to block it.
I have yet to see the Oct 20 KB4580980 dotNET [non-security, Week โCโ] Preview appear in the WU queue so that wushowhide can hide it.
I never click on โCheck for updatesโ. I just wait for updates to appear in the WU queue and then I use wushowhide to hide them until MS-DEFCON is 3+
In the past (Jul 21, Aug 20, and Sept 16), the dotNET [non-security, Week โCโ] preview appeared in the WU queue and I hid it, but it disappeared later on Patch Tuesday when there arrived in the WU queue the dotNET [security, Week โBโ] CU, which I then hid until MS-DEFCON was 3+.
I have not yet unhidden and have not yet installed the Oct 13 KB4578974 dotNET [security, Week โBโ] CU because I am waiting for MS-DEFCON to reach 3+.
So, everything seems to be the same this month as it was in Jul, Aug, and Sept.
So, why is the Oct 20 KB4580980 dotNET [non-security, Week โCโ] preview not appearing in the WU queue?

AskWoody LoungerOctober 21, 2020 at 7:11 am #2305956Looks like a reply I edited may has disappeared … I apologize if this is a repost below:
Thanks for the input folks!ย So it sounds like for Win10 Home users, we need to start deploying wushowhide?ย If Home users pause updates, the .NET preview would install when you un-pause at the end of the month as it checks or seeks for updates.ย But if you’re not paused and not actively checking/seeking, from abbodi86
if .NET Security CU is already installed, .NET Preview CU will be offered and installed
Darned if you do … darned if you don’t with these .NET previews.ย So far this does not seem to happen with other updates (yet?).ย MS has turned most Home users into beta testers for the .NET patches … I’d like to think this is not the intention but a bug?

AskWoody_MVPOctober 21, 2020 at 8:39 am #2305975I don’t know if wushowhide will work as this is a stealth patch; you don’t know it’s coming until it’s already there. You can try running wushowhide often to see if you can catch the patch before it installs, but I don’t know how effective that method would be in preventing this type of update.

What Group Policy settings do you have (all of the ones concerned with Windows Update)?
Have you tried to roll back to your previous version? (You have 10 days as long as you have not run Disk Cleanup (or the equivalent in the Settings App). -

Have you tried to roll back to your previous version? (You have 10 days as long as you have not run Disk Cleanup (or the equivalent in the Settings App).It was most up to date 2004 (last updated 10/13). My gpedit setting is 2 (notify for download)
My history shows my last update as 10/13, but I had a splash screen telling me about changes to things like Settings app and Xbox game bar app.
Maybe I’m overreacting, but this was unexpected.

ManagerOctober 21, 2020 at 11:27 am #2306035If you are on 2004, it wasn’t an upgrade.
It may have been KB4023057, MIcrosoft’s “upgrade you whether you want it or not” patch.
I ran into this on one of my computers.
It doesn’t install as an update, but as a Program called Microsoft Update Health Tools
Look in SettingsApp\Apps or in Control Panel\Programs and Features.
If you find it, uninstall it.1 user thanked author for this post.

AskWoody PlusOctober 21, 2020 at 4:22 pm #2306092I am running Windows 10 Pro 1903, and I got the .net preview update listed as ready to install.ย I did not manually check for updates.ย It came from the background check.ย I used winshowhide to block it without installing it.ย It seems that the previews now are considered normal updates and pushed out with them. I also got KB4023057 pushed to me, and I blocked it the same way. ย I am using Group Policy to delay updates.
