I just restored KB 4462923 and it came in as important BUT unchecked, put it back in the hidden area. Forgot to say it still has October 9, 2018 date.

Yep. I also note the sudden change in date and status has not wiggled the MS-DEFCON rating yet. I’m willing to wait. Thanks for all you folks do.

October Patch Tuesday (October 9, 2018) Beta Test steps:

• Installed Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 (KB890830)
• Installed Security and Quality Rollup for .NET Framework 3.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2, 4.7, 4.7.1, 4.7.2 for Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 for x64 (KB4459922)
• Installed October Security Monthly Quality Rollup Windows7 x64 (KB4462923)
• Rebooted, then checked for updates
• KB3177467-v2 showed as a stand-alone update and installed without error.

What has been updated in the last two versions of KB4462923?

KB3177467  v1  installed September 2016 and v2 about a week ago. KB4462923 is now showing up as checked and available.

I guess they paused KB4462923 for around 3 weeks just to make a room for users to install KB3177467-v2

now it’s back as-is, no real metadata change or explicit dependency on SSU

I installed the October MSRT, but no KB3177467 (ver 2) showed.

So I further installed the 5 MS Office 2010 updates and KB3177467 immediately showed up and was checked, however, then the WUpdate Optional category is totally missing.  PK made mention in one of the many posts that installing KB3177467 would/should bring the Optional category back. Is this true?

I am holding at the Checked KB3177467 stage pending further instructions, or should I proceed to install it and await further instructions from here?

So this morning I check for updates (I have KB3177467 V1 installed from 2016), the previously Checked KB3177467 V2 is gone, the Optional Update category (with KB’s) is back, and KB4462923 is showing and checked!

From what I am reading here, I should install KB4462923 and afterwards KB3177467 V2 will reappear checked which should then also be installed – correct?

That’s the sequence I found successful. The Windows Update “important updates” queue has to be empty before KB3177467 v2 will show up. It’s still exclusive and has to be installed by itself.

It will be interesting to know if KB3177467-v1 is missing, KB4462923 fails as it did earlier.

Perhaps the dependency has been removed and v2 will just install after the Rollup without error.

If you are doing Group B, though, I would be sure it’s there first, just to be on the safe side.

SSU KB3177467 can be installed anytime
the issue is to get it to install before Monthly Rollup

I rebooted after the KB3177467 install even though system didnt request it.

@PKCano:   I just now located this topic, and noted that KB3177467 appears to be an issue??  I have never seen anything relating to this “Stack” update, so I will try to search to see if it perhaps was installed quite some time ago.   Difficult when one has vision problems, however your outstanding advice has helped me more than I can ever express.  Thank you once again.

So is it safe to install KB4462923 on Windows 7?  In WU it went from unchecked to checked but still shows the October 9, 2018 date.

I have KB3177467 v.1 already installed from 3/10 2017.

@PKCano:  I have searched and searched for the information you sent to me, and have not been able to locate it.   I am attempting to get back to “where I should be” since I had a hiatus which put me into “limbo”.

In the interim I have checked for updates and only show TWO “Important” and they are as follows:  KB4481480 (2019-01) Security & Quality Rollup for .NET

KB4480970  (2019-01)  Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Win7x64

They are both checked.

Only 2 Optionals, none checked.

Is it safe to install the two Important updates which I listed?  That is all that I have pending at the present time.

I sincerely apologize for being unable to locate my references which you provided for me, PKC.  If I can only get back to “where I belong” at this point in time it would be wonderful.   Your patience, outstanding expertise, and knowledge are, as always, most sincerely appreciated,not only myself, but all of us.   Thank you once again.   🙂

I have three freshly installed Windows 7 machines.  I cannot get any of the monthly rollups on any of the three systems to install.  They get to 15% and then roll back.

They have KB3177467 v2 installed.  If I try to get it from the Microsoft Update catalog and install it, it says it already exists.

Existing machines have the rollups applied with no issues.

What am I doing wrong on the three fresh machines?  I appreciate any help.

@dportenlanger , I think you are running into an old problem most of us have forgotten. Or at least I do not trust myself to walk through it. Fortunately, Canadian Tech himself has posted just today a reference to his work at Microsoft Answers. I believe it has the solution you seek. The key is two specific updates. But I’ll leave CT to explain.

Interestingly, I installed Windows 8.1/Classic Shell on one of the failing machines and let it do all the updates.  No issues were found.  It appears Windows 7 is dead before 1/20.

That is another great solution. One with a more distant lifespan horizon. Worthy of further review in Woody’s blogpost, coincidentaly presented on November 7th.

Hi there! Hmm. I am a bit confused, on my w7 machine, KB3177467 is offered again, as an important update. It was apparently installed in october, 2016. Do I have to install it again? Don’t want to brick this old laptop…. For now, it works pretty good! thanks for your advices!

KB3177467 is a servicing stack update, and as such would show up when all other important updates are installed or hidden. You shouldn’t hide it. Install it by itself. Reboot.
