I have a file provided by Microsoft which blocks O/S updates selectively. I have one of dozens of Toshiba laptop models (with SSD) which will not upgrade past Win 10 v 1703 (The list is on a Toshiba website somewhere, sorry, i lost track of it). So i run wushowhide.diagcab which allows me to specify (with difficulty, since it is an interface that is rather hard to make sense of- too bad about the “no swearing” rule here or i could provide further details) that I do not want to update past v 1703. If i allow it to update, i lose about 45 minutes productivity until the computer realises it cannot accept the update and reverts to the previous version. But progs like MS Office continue to update, along with Windows defender and all that kind of stuff.

@Rick-Corbett,
Thanks for the update on WUB from v1.1
As I posted Here, there are several programs that do this, WUB included, it’s not an all inclusive list.
WUB is among the easiest to understand and use, imho.

For what it’s worth, when I opened this thread on a new browser tab, Heimdal Thor blocked the connection to sordum.org, the publishers of Windows Update Blocker; and when I right-clicked on the link to that site in the first post above, Pale Moon warned me that “this connection is untrusted”. The technical details explain that the site “uses an invalid security certificate”.
Strange. Sordum.org has a valid LetsEncrypt certificate that won’t expire for another week.
weird.
I’m not experiencing the problem with the sordum.org site with Palemoon 28.8.2.1, Cybertooth.
that web site appears to work correctly on my end with no “untrusted connection” messages
all of the problems have blown over
This will never happen as each monthly update brings new bugs.
For those who use Sordium’s Windows Update Blocker , an updated version has been released to v1.6 – 19th October 2020.
I updated yesterday and was going to post about the update… but you beat me to it.
If only @velociraptor included a “what’s new”, either on the website or in the download… or have I missed it somewhere?
Couldn’t find a changelog either..perhaps @velociraptor will post here or onsite?

I just came across this website – I never heard of them before. Is Sordium.org’s software trustworthy? They seem to have some decent tools – like this Win Update Blocker and the Random Password Generator. Thanks

ask the creators yourself by contacting them on the sordum.org web site
like this Win Update Blocker
What version of Windows ?
What do you want to block : Patch Tuesday ? Drivers ?, Feature updates ?
You have tools like ‘Metered connections’, update pause, apps like WUmgr…

Could be just ‘finger-trouble’ on my part with a Windows Update Blocker install. After downloading & running the Wub.zip file, then opening wub.exe, I ended up with an odd message headed: User Account Control
“Do you want to allow this app from an unknown publisher
to make changes to your device? wub.exe Yes/No?”
I tried both sordum.org links from the above Jan 28 & Aug 1 posts, and used the same non-descript Download option in the grey box at the very bottom-left side of the page (just above the Related Posts heading) but got the same result.
Is there a problem with this site, or am I being over-cautious as brand-new W10 user?
I always get that prompt for WUB and I reply yes. I am running version 1.7.
My AV scan of the file says no threats found. Thousands have downloaded the file says the AV and the AV gave it a good rating.
On the other hand, if my AV had no knowledge of the file or flagged a virus, I would have answered no, don’t run it.

I used free portable ‘StopUpdates10‘
“Once you run the program, all you have to do is tap ‘Stop Updates’ to cancel future updates indefinitely. This won’t prevent the system from updating ever, though. Instead, you can manually perform these ‘upgrades’ at the time that works best for you.
If you don’t want to take such a drastic measure, StopUpdates10 will also let you pause these updates for a set period of time. And you can always reverse this decision and deactivate it at any time.”
I just tried installing and running Windows Update Blocker.
I didn’t see any mention of this detail above, so I’ll mention it here:
In Windows Services, there are 2 entries:
“Windows Update”
and
“Windows Update Medic Service”
The User can typically DISABLE “Windows Update” by accessing its PROPERTIES.
However, the second service — “Windows Update Medic Service” — is evidently programmed to start automatically -AND- its PROPERTIES are locked to prevent any User changes.
I double-checked this point, and Windows Update Blocker is smart enough to DISABLE the “Windows Update Medic Service” too.
Thus, Windows Update Blocker should work in a manner very similar to an ON / OFF switch, which should guarantee ease of use for all Users, whether experts or not.
p.s. forgive me if the Medic Service was already discussed above.
However, the second service — “Windows Update Medic Service” — is evidently programmed to start automatically -AND- its PROPERTIES are locked to prevent any User changes.
It’s possible to disable any service, including one that’s locked, by changing the “Start” value in the registry for the service to 4 (Disabled). which is obviously what Windows Update Blocker does.
FYI, on my own PC I manually changed the Windows Update Medic Service Start value to 3 (Manual) and, so far, it’s stayed that way.
Here’s the list of the available services Start options:
0 = Boot: Loaded by the kernel loader
1 = System: Loaded by the I/O subsystem
2 = Automatic: Loaded by the Service Control Manager
3 = Manual: Only starts when called by a process that requires it
4 = Disabled: Never starts
