I apologize if this is the wrong place, but I can’t seem to find where to place my question. I have followed Susan’s post on Oct. 31, 2021 on how to use WuMgr. I get it downloaded, but it never seems to work properly for me. I never seem to be able to pull up the available updates. I have a screen print of what it pulls up for me. If I am doing something wrong I would certainly like to know what it is. I really don’t see how I could be doing anything wrong. I get it downloaded with no problems. But when I click on the search button this is what I get (please see attachment):

I have tried using wushowhide but it always downloads the updates no matter what I seem to do. Updates were even installed over a metered connection. So right now I have given up on that program.

Thank you for helping a not very computer savvy senior.

Read this post to get an idea what may be going on. #2473581.
If you have Win HOME, you will need to use WUMgr to control the download/install instead of the “2” (notify download/install) in Group Policy.
You can use WUMgr to search for updates and hide the ones you don’t want. But Windows Update, wushowhide, and WUMgr all use the Windows Update Service to check for updates, and if WU is Paused, none of them will work.
There is further guidance in AKB2000016 and AKB2000013 (scroll down and use @Matador ‘s method in the latter).

If you have any quetions, come back here and ask.

Thank you. I don’t understand this part of what you said, “If you have Win HOME, you will need to use WUMgr to control the download/install instead of the “2” (notify download/install) in Group Policy. I do have Windows 10 Home and I am of the impression that you cannot change the Group Policy in Windows 10 Home in the registry like Pro users can. I understand that the “2” you mention involves a registry setting. Also, I do have WU paused, so I do understand what you are saying about that.

Let me ask this. When I downloaded WuMgr, does that automatically take control of WU or is there something else I need to change.

Only Windows PRO has Group Policy.
Both Win HOME and PRO have a Registry. It is not the same as Group Policy.
Because HOME does not have Group Policy, it cannot use GP settings to control Windows Update (like the “2” setting in GP)

Therefore, other tools must be used in Win HOME: Manual changes in the Registry done by the User (not really for Users who are not tech savvy), wushowhide (a Microsoft tool), or third-party tools (like WUMgr).
AKB2000016 and AKB200013 are linked above to provide information about Windows Update settings available for both Win Home and Pro individually, as well as some info about wushowhide. Below the text in AKB2000016, there are screenshots showing the Registry and GP settings locations.

          @joep517
has linked above the Knowledge Base article with instructions for using WUMgr. When using WUMgr (or other third-party tool), you need to look at the settings to control Windows Update in the manner you choose (auto update or on demand, what updates you want to hide, what updates you want to install, etc).

Thank you for your help. I just wanted to give you an update as to how I made out.

Wushowhide did not work. I followed your instructions to the letter. I printed out your instructions and followed them step by step, after I read over them about 10 times to make sure I had a thorough understanding. I really don’t know how others are getting this to work for them, but I have tried this several times in the past and always with the same results. Microsoft will definitely download over a metered connection. They have done this to me every time. Unless you have a slow internet connection or can run wushowhide and stop the services in less than 15 seconds, these updates are being downloaded and installed. And I mean all of them. The only reason they all didn’t get installed was because some of the updates were too large to download that fast.

Changing to a metered connection is like putting a “No Trespass” sign on your fence. It only works if people are law abiding. It is useless if people have no respect for the law. Well, Microsoft seems to fit into the latter – no respect for the consumer.

The good news is the updates didn’t cause any damage. Microsoft did change a couple of the settings which caused some distressed until I was able to figure out what they did and where the settings were located that I needed to correct the problems. As of now, everything seems to be working smoothly.

I have installed WuMgr and have it setup. There is apparently a difference even with that depending if you have Win 10 Home or Pro version. It would be great if askwoody.com had a section for Win 10 Home users because most of time we can’t just go and make Group Policy changes and solve the problems. I know that not everything can be solved this way, but Home users seem to just have to live many of the problems. It seems that most of the people on your site have the Pro version and I was surprised by that since I thought it would be the other way around.  If it were possible to upgrade to Pro, I would. But the reality for many seniors on fixed incomes, and many other non-seniors, that is not a possibility. I’m not complaining, it is just the way things are today. In the end we are all in the same boat. It probably won’t be too long before Microsoft says, “We have a better system now, so anything that is one day old or older, is now obsolete (example:  Windows 11). You need to buy this brand new thing-a-ma-bob computer, with all its’ flashy, neon lights that comes preloaded with Windows 1000”. There is always something new on the horizon, but it is not always better. Newer doesn’t mean better, just different. Any how, thank you for your willingness to help others.

            Have a safe Labor Day.

OP [But when I click on the search button this is what I get (please see attachment)]:

Wish Attachment had posted — to see His Search Result — as all the How-To’s available may not help him …. until What he sees after Search is understood. Typical (Home) Boxes Checked for BOTH Tabs would help him confirm correct Setup.

We do. All KB articles have sections for Home and Pro.

BTW, I have Home on all my machines – I spend the extra on a USB backup disk.

      cheers, Paul
