      Sigh.

I hesitate to call my experience with my Brother MFC-9120cn a love affair, but danged if it’s not turning out to be something close.

I have that printer thread from about 12-18 months ago on this site bookmarked for future reference, which helps bring me peace of mind.

HP = Deadcorp to me now. 😔

    • Well crap.

Microsoft’s wired ergonomic keyboards are the one product of theirs that I’ve truly enjoyed that aren’t Windows XP or 7. I’ve lost count of the number of primary systems this Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 has been attached to. I’m not sure what else they could do to move in a straight line away from my preferences as a consumer.

*Orders a couple spares of the current, not quite as good  but still good model of the Nat. Ergo*

      Tbird Annoyance

I just moved a bunch of emails into their own folder in Thunderbird and encountered the threading issue for the first time. I did not ask for it to happen, none of my other folders are threaded, it pulled a Microsoft and did what it wanted. I did find a way to turn the threading/greater than marks off and go back to a flat list. See the image for the little highlighted control I clicked to make the threading go away.

Also, the little purple bent arrow is an indicator that a message has been replied to. I didn’t see any obvious way to turn that off in Settings or anywhere in a quick look but I didn’t try very hard as I like having those there.

      deuxbits,

I observed the same behavior you describe on two Win 10 22H2 machines and one Win 11 22H2 machine. One Win 11 machine to to go and I expect the same. Experience with WU weirdness, listening for fans, and a suspicious eye on activity in Task Manager have prevented any unfortunate mishaps.

The first question that pops into my mind is “can they really sell a true Win 11 Pro license key with that cheap little bit hardware that isn’t counterfeit or some sort of educational or feature limited export edition?”

I think not. It says Windows is pre-installed, but in the mouseover product images, it says drive is not included.

Also look at “Warm Tips” 1 & 2 about not being connected to a network upon startup.

My verdict: Probably no Windows product key, tweaked to suppress any warning messages that Windows is not registered, on a sketchy, probably used or defective SSD. Designed to last just slightly longer than the Amazon return window so you’re stuck with it.

If it were true, that would be a good way to get a Pro license as an insurance policy if the hardware fails quickly, which it seems that it can.

      From the comments/reviews:

I have bought 2 of these and each one only lasted less than a month. There is only a 1 month return window. I will not buy another one.

Could be a push to 11, but could just as well be a push to Win 10, 22H2.
Always worth being at least a little paranoid when dealing with Windows updates.

Bookmarked! That’s going to be super handy as I learn my way around my new MacBook Air M2. First Mac I’ve owned/used in over 20 years.

    • I would say technically possible, but it would require a significant amount of beta testing to be done, and news of that would leak out.

I’m not a lawyer, but agree with bbearren that current licensing agreements probably contain language that would prohibit such a unilateral change. There is also the matter of social backlash from the public, and the risk of politicians seeing an opportunity to boost their positives by dragging Microsoft in hearings and/or passing laws detrimental to MS’s future plans.

I believe currently released versions of Windows are safe from modification, but look for first steps in the direction of subscriptions and licensing agreement language changes  starting with Windows 12 and fully crossing over a version or two later. Everything subject to change at any time for any reason of course.

    • Perhaps something of a modest diaspora, but not many will go to straight, no chaser Linux. Still too high a fence to climb over for vast numbers of everyday folks who aren’t tech enthusiasts. Switchers will end up on a *nix based OS though without even knowing it.

MacOS X+, iOS etc. have their ancestry in BSD Unix, Chrome OS & Android are Linux based, and those are where most switchers will end up if they leave Windows. It seems Windows is the last proprietary strongly end user/consumer facing OS out there.

As much as I hate this RentOS idea for myself, many businesses may like it for the “we take care of everything” aspect, and when they eventually try to push it on retail consumers, they may well succeed if it’s presented in the right way.

You’ll get 3 years of Windows with your new computer purchase, maybe a year of cheap or free Office, and they’ll just ease folks in to a full subscription model.

“You’ll own nothing, and be happy.” 🤷‍♂️

Based on the information in the linked topic, it appears to be some sort of new Microsoft Defender thing?

    • in reply to: Should I go to win11? #2545707

I see no compelling reason to switch to Windows 11 when Win 10 is finally “good”. Feature set is stable, OS is mostly stable except for security update induced problems.

Win 11 is still buggy, still shifting features (and now “dribbling” them onto you). I’m still waiting for the ability to place my taskbar vertically on the right side of my screen without the use of third party addons (if any of the ones out there even allow that). I see flashes of excellence in some Win 11 features, but too much has been taken away and not put back yet, and I don’t trust it, therefore my production machine will continue to run Win 10 until end of life for that OS.

It’s funny – krism, you are already where I want to be; mainly using non-MS operating systems for the majority of computer time and only using Windows when it is the best -or only- choice.

    • in reply to: Dish Network Hacked #2545633

I was wondering if this was a new hack but no, these are the continuing effects of the February 23 hack.

Either Dish has really fallen on their face in terms of security, or this is a hit by a major state actor or both. It’s been nearly a whole month and they can’t even restore auto billing yet (I had to use the contracted web payment service they have put up on their page) and ordering changes to your service is apparently sketchy as the customer service system is not back to full capacity.

I would think that the Wikipedia page for OpenAI and it’s CEO Sam Altman would be a good starting point for learning more about ChatGPT.
