I’ve looked at Susan’s advice on checking BitLocker status (off or on) prior to deciding whether to instal or hide KB 5012170.  I cannot find anything about BitLocker through start and search on my Lenovo S340 IdeaPad, running Win 10 Home 21H2.  My laptop is about 4 years old and I’ve tried various methods (eg from Susan’s Tasks for the Weekend from 09/2021) to find BitLocker on my laptop, but I cannot find it.  I’ve also tried other suggested methods from How to Geek (Control Panel>System and Security> (look for) BitLocker Drive Encryption) without success.

Is there something that I’m missing here? Appreciate help on this.

Apologies if this in the wrong forum.

Susan:  I have Windows Updates paused until 5 September.  Therefore, am I correct in assuming that I cannot run Wushowhide.diagcab now, because “Wushowhide uses the Windows Update Service to search for updates and will not run if the Service is Disabled” – I assume Paused = Disabled?

      Appreciate your advice and patience!

Pixie:  you mentioned that you have a ‘new’ laptop running Win 10 Home, but the laptop did have BitLocker pre-installed.  What brand/model laptop is it?

I’ve been reading the various comments regarding KB 5012170 and the risk of ‘triggering’ BitLocker and being asked for the recovery key.  As a precaution, I reviewed Susan’s ‘tasks for the weekend’ from September last year regarding BitLocker and checked through File Explorer: I don’t have BitLocker on at all, nor does it seem to be available for my laptop.

I have a Lenovo S340 Ideapad running Windows 10 Home 21H2. I checked BitLocker settings again under ‘about your PC’ and it stated that BitLocker is only available for my laptop if I upgraded to either Win 10 Pro or Win 11 Pro: is this still correct?  I have no intention of upgrading to either Win 10 Pro or Win 11 Pro.

Have there been any instances of KB 5012170 triggering BitLocker on Win 10 Home pcs? I’m very concerned about being ‘locked out’ of my laptop.

Appreciate any advice or suggestions on this matter.

Susan:  no, I don’t block the MS store,  I allow updates ‘from anywhere’ so that I can get updates to Chrome or Lenovo as I choose, but I don’t access the MS store  either.

Is the AppX vulnerability now covered by the December Cumulative Update, or do I have to get the AppX fix from the Microsoft Store, as mentioned in AskWoody on 19/12/2021?

      Appreciate any advice on this.

    • in reply to: 3000005: On the subject of Botnets #2371925

I check on AKB 3000005 from time to time to check my IP address, as my ISP will change my IP address occassionally. In the last day or 2 I’ve noticed that clicking on the ‘checkip.kaspersky.com link in AKB 3000005 above shows not just my ip address, but another ip address as well. This other IP address commences ’82… which is apparently a Kaspersky IP address. I’ve checked on a couple of other pcs in the local library and the same thing happens; the ‘local’ IP address and a Kaspersky address.
So, have I inadvertently become part of a botnet, or has the link been compromised.

      Appreciate any advice on this.

      regards

Woody:  I’ve relied on your site for over 8 years and found it to be  to be the most useful and easy to understand Windows site around.  As a definite non-techie, you and your staff have saved me from my own naivety on a few occassions!

All the best and enjoy your retirement.

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 3: Get the March 2020 patches installed #2213612

I recently went through  the feature update on my Win 10 1809 home laptop and I’m now on 1909 home.  When I went through the feature update, I had to temporarily disable my 3rd party a/v (Malwarebytes) and then re-enable after the successful feature update to 1909.

So, will I have to temporarily disable Malwarebytes again so that the March updates will download & install smoothly?  Appreciate any advice on this.

    • PK:  yes, I usually have it set to ‘metered ‘.  I had just thought of that when I checked how I had installed the Dec 2019 CU.  In my notes, in large letters ‘turn off metered connection’ then try again.

The 01-2020 CU has downloaded and installed without any problems as far as I can tell.

      Thanks for your help.

      regards

    • Further to my previous post, #2110408 I ran the update troubleshooter again and it found a problem described as ‘problem with BITS service.  the requested service has already been started. More help available by typing NET HELP 2182‘.  I did that, and there was some information but I’m none the wiser.
