    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 4: Patching is approved #2362014

April patches installed with little problems to report on Win 8.1. 🙂 Two things I noticed with this patch. 1.) Windows normally reboots once, this time it rebooted twice. 2.) It took a LONG time to get to the desktop from the login screen. I’m talking a good 10 minutes before I got to the desktop.

@sb, I believe you put an incorrect link on the home page under the MSDEFCON4 post.

      https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/computerworld-all-clear-to-install-updates should be https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/ms-defcon-4-all-clear-to-install-updates.

I think you mistakenly added “computerworld” to the link instead of “ms-defcon-4”.  Here’s to a Happy New Year 🙂

I’m quite happy with separate SSU’s from CU’s on Win8.1 and can live with the status quo until Win8.1 EoS. IMO this reduces the possibility of erroneous CU Win8.1 patches until then.

Very true and I even LIKE the idea I can install an SSU separately and NOT having it incorporated into the CU for that reason. I don’t mind having to install the SSU by itself because, most of the time, it doesn’t require a reboot of the system anyway.

For those that were hoping that SSU’s were going to become a thing of the past soon:

      According to https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/windows-it-pro-blog/simplifying-on-premises-deployment-of-servicing-stack-updates/ba-p/1646039

      Aria Carley of Microsoft:

Currently we are just announcing the upcoming capability for those on Windows 10, version 2004 and above. Later on as we provide more capabilities / extend this capability to more versions, we will update this community. Stay tuned.

      🙂

For those of us especially on Win 8.1, SSU’s are most likely going to have be continued to be installed as I don’t think M$ will extend this capability to Win 8.1 as it is no longer in mainstream support and will be EOL in about 2 years anyway. However, this sounds encouraging for Win 10 in the long run.

    • @Purg2– I have had good luck in installing .NET updates as well. As advised by PKCano,  I DON’T install .NET previews or previews of ANY kind.

As Woody says in the monthly ComputerWorld articles for patching when MSDEFCON4 or higher is reached, Windows 8.1 continues to be the most stable operating system 🙂

    • Thanks PKCano. What is confusing is that KB4578013 wasn’t listed as a Preview on Win 8.1 Windows Update but that’s M$ for you.
