@Ascaris: an interesting view looking at MS’s antics from a positive angle.

@Ascaris: it might be a separate issue, but I was just replying to a comment by @MrJimPhelps about MS trying to get control.

As for MS having to get in line behind other influencers, that is true insofar as they would all pay similar amounts to the Linux Foundation. From what I understand MS’s $500k contribution is bigger than others, which, if true, allows MS to jump the queue. That makes sense in the context of another, separate but relevant issue: M’s take-over of Github, a platform for open source apps.

@Ascaris: in your last comment you said:

So far Veeam looks great …..

      and:

… I have not done a restore yet

Both those phrases suggest to me an ongoing evaluation. You now seem to say that the evaluation is over.

@OscarCP: Linux does not need to be defragmented because it functions differently than Windows does; in fact, it is recommended not to.

A very useful site for Linux Mint tips, tricks, good practices, speed-ups, etc. is the Easy Linux Tips project

It is an excellent site, kept up-to-date for all 3 versions of LM. Right now the focus is 19.1. Check it out.

As a Linux newbie I installed Linux next to Win 8.1 on my 5-year old laptop in order to get away from Windows, and I can say it was heaven to break free from the MS update mess and Win 10 enforcement.

3 weeks ago I bought a new laptop with Win 10 pre-installed. The 1st thing I did was install Linux and allow it to entirely wipe Windows off. I struggled a bit with an issue that, unbeknown to me at 1st, was caused by a graphical driver. I got it fixed and I have continued to enjoy freedom ever since.

Is Linux perfect? No, it certainly is not, but then, very few things, if any, are. I have found very acceptable replacements for apps that did not have a Linux versions, and where I can quite happily live with the workarounds I have to use.

    • And I thought Win 8.1 was relatively safe from this kind of [nonsense]. Has M$ changed its ways? Has it learned anything from the mess it caused during the past 2 years? Perhaps it learned that plenty of home users will stick with Windows no matter what, so there is no need to change its ways.

@anonymous: that is my understanding of the problem all Linux distros face in this regard.

@JohnW: I agree with your 1st para. From what I understand it is not practical for a Linux distro to cater for each and every WiFi adapter out there. I am not a techie at all so I cannot judge that premise on its validity, maybe that is just a weak excuse from the Linux side. Yes, if you buy a Windows computer the adapter picks up the WiFi signal immediately without hassle, isn’t it also true to say that computer manufacturer that installs Windows tunes it to the adapter in the computer?

As for your 2nd para, I did test drive a live distro but did not try to install the Wifi driver, so cannot judge your statement.

Linux Mint 19.1 proposed an upgrade to 4.15.0.46.48, which I duly installed. But I uninstalled it when I noticed that Mint did not pick up a USB stick anymore, a problem reported by others too on the Linux Mint forum.

@Ascaris: Macrium Reflect to back-up Linux from within Windows. That’s cool 🙂 I assume you don’t mean back-up but disk image.

I pondered a few weeks about my back-up set-up for Mint, discussing on the forum with various people. They think Timeshift is great (offers a system restore-type back-up), as well as Clonezilla, which is a monster to me. I eventually settled on a simple set-up:

      * personal files I back-up to the cloud (SpiderOak) every day. I started in Windows and since they have a Linux client I carry on

      * Aptik on a USB stick for my /home directory and self-installed apps/progs – every week or even less frequently

And that’s it. If ever there is a major disaster then Linux is simple enough to do a fresh install and restore the back-ups pretty quickly. A big difference with Windows where you need product keys and a lot of time, patience and faith to get it back on track.

@FL Jack: I like both antiX and MX, though I am somewhat put off by the inadvisability to use PPAs.

I don’t like Wine, was disappointed by it because you can only smoothly use apps from their supported list, which inevitably did not include what I wanted. Now I don’t miss it anymore because I have good Linux equivalents and/or workarounds. What’s more, Wine poses a security risk for your Linux set-up because you run Windows programs on it.
