Using WUMGR I have the hide wu settings page check/uncheck available with auto update disabled. I have read this is not the case so I am wondering if it is because of reg or policy settings I have made.

I have ” disable automatic update”, checked.  So, I’m pretty sure that if it is unchecked, you will get updates. At least that’s my experience.  I don’t care about the hide wu settings page.

      Rant.

These settings and their explanation is where I think AskWoody has failed in a consensus and explanation.

Perhaps that’s impossible due to the different Windows configurations: Home versus Pro, etc. There are numerous, lengthy posts from various people here without any consensus at all.  Dredging through all of those posts, doesn’t help.  Even the basic tutorial gets you set up but doesn’t explain the various switches.

Unfortunately aggravatingly, for me it was pretty much trial and error.

      Hi joep157.

      Yes I’ve read it.

With all due respect to the authors of that post and others who reply, it’s a perfect example of incomplete instructions. Maybe I’m reading and viewing it incoherently, but I see no explanation of the option settings. Even reading through all the replies, there is very little consensus.

Or reading through 135 replies here:

      https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/guide-to-using-wumgr-for-windows-10-updates/

      or more here:

      https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/wumgr-options-panel-settings-for-win10-pro-what-do-you-use/#post-2434555

To be sure, one can wade through all the examples and…maybe…try to figure out what might work, but for me after reading a few “How To’s” or guides and over 200 replies, I was left with not knowing what to do. It was like reading a book with a missing chapter. Again, maybe I’m just dumb.

In my opinion, there is a solution here @AskWoody, and that’s to create “How To’s” or guides with a beginner in mind with complete instructions and lock the post. Plus many of the guides already posted are in need of some updated editing.

Of course, this all depends on what, and who @AskWoody wants to help?

        Great Idea Mike

I would also add that said How-To would be edited by the author as new info becomes clear. And like the Daily Computer Tips thread it would have a separate comments thread which could be used by the author of the How-To thread to update said thread.

I am tempted to post this under suggestions but do not want to double post (or steal the idea).

The reason there’s no consensus about how to use wumgr, here on Askwoody or anywhere else on the web, is because the developer (David Xanatos) has never provided any instructions on exactly how to use it or what each option actually does! Everything you see posted about how to use it is at most a “best guess” according to what happened for that particular user.

First and foremost, there’s the problem that when you use wumgr.exe, it “reads” your existing Windows update registry settings and those are what control each of the settings it displays. That means there’s really no such thing as “default” first use settings because they will vary from system to system and user to user depending on exactly what Windows update settings each user has applied to their particular system.

Then there’s the fact none of wumgr’s settings get stored anywhere on your drive, they’re read from/applied to the Windows update section of the registry. So when you change something in wumgr, it changes the actual setting in the registry itself! That means, if you complete delete wumgr.exe from your PC, reboot, download a new zip file, and extract wumgr and run it, its settings will be exactly what they were before you deleted it!

All that totally complicates trying to provide a comprehensive set of instructions for how to use it and what each setting does which is why you get so many different answers to the same question. Each individual will tell you what happened with their particular Windows setup when they changed their wumgr settings and, because not everyone will necessarily have the same Windows update settings in their registry (especially here on Askwoody where there are many different suggested ways to control Windows updates) their answers won’t always match each other.

        Alejr.

Thanks for the explanation, you put a lot of thought into it.

And… it’s exactly the information that should be merged into the (a) guide for WuMgr.

Why? Because your post contains the detail that helps to get a complete view of how or why the application does what it does.

I realize that we’re all, more or less, volunteers here at AskWoody but, when good information gets buried in a myriad of comments, then a forum or discussion group becomes an unsearchable mess… leading to the same questions being asked over and over.

        I appreciate your comments.

      On the ‘view updates’ page?

WUmgr doesn’t update ‘view update history’. It does update ‘uninstall updates’

If you enable ‘hide WU..’ you won’t be able to reach any Windows update page/settings
